I didn't say they weren't on a separate list. Chill out. The only thing, by the way, that this rule infers, is that under-21 players aren't counted toward the 25-man squad size limitations in the Premier League. It doesn't mean they can't be part of your first team setup, far from it.
Well don't fact check me with incorrect information.

The AFL draft works by drafting a 17yo onto a senior list.

You have conflated "youth programs" with a senior list.

My entire point is AFL senior list try to do both and nobody else does and I'm correct.

Of course AFL clubs can run their own programs (E.g. Academies) but academy kids arent on the actual senior playing list.

In European soccer youth players are not on the senior list. They are just the same or similar to academies.

So no European soccer do not have youth players on the senior list. In fact the opposite.

I don't mind being fact checked or wrong but i do mond being fact checked with bullshit alternative facts.

They're still part of the club at u18 level, and many do get offered a senior contract on a very, very small hope that they can go on to be part of the first team - many more on the hope that they can be on-sold at profit to a lower-level club.

At a soccer club, the delineation between "senior list" and "academy list" isn't really concrete, players can flick from u21 to first-team to reserves and back again, it's not as defined as it is in the AFL.

Ashcroft, Daicos. And the two Reid’s don’t need that.

If anything I’d prefer another 4-5 list sports for 17 year olds

So you think the AFL should be a juniors competition. I go watch the juniors at 9am in the morning. The best of the best should be the AFL, not the potential best of the best.

It’s an argument that’s been going on for more than 150 years.

Our game is geared towards having fast running young players. All they lack at 17 to 18 years old is muscle body strength.

But history tells us plenty of young guns have the speed, awareness and baulking skills to evade the heavy hitters who want to flatten them.

Obviously most take a few seasons to adjust to the pace and brutality of the game but many slot right in and find plenty of the ball.

Our current reserves league is just like the old days. Slower pace than league footy and young blokes can work on their disposal under pressure and eventually get senior games under their belt.

Agree with those who have mentioned a national reserves competition. It would increase list sizes and players could develop in the 2's. Teams would have mature age bodies for both back ups and someone who fell through the cracks in juniors and could have a Tom Stewart like ceiling. It probably goes a long way to fixing some of the issues people have spoken about in this thread. The only downside is cost for extra players and staff though I believe the AFL could afford the extra expense.

What you are arguing for isn’t about having the best of the best playing.

It would actually keep better players out of the league for being too young while older but less good players are playing instead.

The talent is already getting stretched thin. Keeping players out of the league only lowers that talent further. The younger players that aren’t ready on a list are already playing at a lower level just with much better coaching than if they weren’t on a list.
