I see it as a good thing. Will mean those who have done their homework will benefit.

Agree 100%. Will be very tough this year for a 10 min team before lockout to fluke a high finish. Byes to negotiate, sub rules and the team where all the cash is to be made is not playing Rd 1. Huge advantage for those putting in the research.

Plenty of teams will wake up in Rd 4 or 6 and have a bucketful of Krispy Kremes. Plenty more cranky when their starter is the sub because they haven't watched the trends for that team.

Good year for the experienced Dtrs IMO

Gold Coast having a bye in round 1 will really reduce the ability of people that just look at team lists before lockout.

Byes and the fact league games are not counted in multiple bye rounds, should reduce the competition for those that are going for overall wins.

I still think many experienced DT'ers are going to get caught with their pants down this year. I'm having visions of a double bye round with a few key injuries and the board going into meltdown.

One thing's for sure. If you're good enough to be able to nail 3 86-100k rookies on your midfield bench then that'll be a huge advantage. Potentially 200k+ saving right there than can go a long way to improving your starting side.

Gold Coast will potentially allow this..

Lock, Wellar, Iles, Stanley, JMP, Mzungu, Callanin

The main issue will be dumping one or two Gold Coast rookies before round 9, I can see what being the real danger round.

Great point. I love that round 1 bye for GC. Its going to take some balls to lock in GC rookies without knowing where they fit in McKenna's best 22. He will play them all thru NAB cup & a few should stand out but the nerves will kick in & a lot will just go for who is named. I think those that have been following GC well & predict the 22 best will thrive.

Yeah agree that GC round 1 bye is a good thing for those putting in the hard work. All the experienced DTers will smash it next year - no doubt. I think you will find it very hard to finish outside the top 3-5k because thats about it if not less that actually put in the effort IMO.

Its going to take some balls to pick so many players from the start without knowing if there best 21 or not. Alot may change it late and not have the guts IMO. Because it can ruin a season by getting a few rookies completly wrong.

Rookies on the field

How many is too many?

Have 4 now but am contemplating 5. May be more relevant this year as we have Gold Coast entering the AFL.

How many do you have?

Re: Rookies on the field

five at the moment, and it will most likely stay that way.

am confident that forwards and midfielders will be fine, but Jacobs getting glandular has me slightly wary of the backs. Hoping someone pops up in the NAB cup

Re: Rookies on the field

When you say "rookies" are you specifically referring to true rookies? Are you classifying someone like Harris as a rookie?

Starting 5 rookies on the field? Wow. So that basically means you're confident of finding 14 rookies (that's not even including rucks) that will start the year and not only score well but get games consistently? Good luck with that. An incredibly difficult, perhaps even impossible task.

Yeh i've classified him as a rookie, although probably shouldn't.

I realise it's a big risk, but like footycool said, with the inclusion of the gold coast there is a greater chance that more rookies will be playing (after round 1 of course).

14 players? No i doubt it. It would be very hard to pick regular players in your three bench spots in 3 separate positions for anybody. But if i can get 6 in the subs to play 5-10 games, four gold coast players on the field, and one other player, then i'll be happy

Re: GC Debutants

you know how in round 3, people generally trade out their wrong picks and pick up the "next-best-thing" (TM)- Well the NBT's from GC, Ade and NM will extend through to round 4, allowing for more leeway in this trading period. (Unless you're chock full of the GC, Ade or NM already...)

In short, it gives you an extra week to make the call on any under-performing rookies, but also allows you to watch the GC before committing to them.

If you have committed to a GC player from round 1, once they have played 3 games, it's going to be a lot harder to get out of them if they aren't performing.

does that really work though?

say I have an adelaide player who is a mistake - quite likely :p
his price won't change until round 4 due to the bye. got that, fine.

BUT

what about the NBT target? they will have (increased) in price in round 3.

so do I really have an extra round, if my target is still going up.

How many GC rookies is it pure madness to have on your team?

I have put together a pretty rough side (which is still missing a midfielder and two forwards...like I said: rough), but at this stage it has 2 GC rookies on every line except rucks which has 1.

It feels like madness, but with 3 bench players this year and the wealth of high-JS GC rookies, it just doesn't feel enough like madness to change it.

there is money to be made in the GC rooks no question.

but to complicate things with early byes in round 1 and 9, you might find it takes longer to upgrade them to real premiums. so whilst the return looks good on paper, if you have to wait 2 or 3 weeks longer to trade them out that could cost you a lot.

Re: Rookies on the field

I consider a rookie under the number 1 draft picks price and ill be happily starting with 4 at this current time.

Re: Rookies on the field

If Otten is inclded as a rookie then I'll be starting with 6 at the moment. Had 4 last year, and went fine. In hindsight going with 6 last year would have been perfect.

Allows me to start with 15 keepers, plenty of risk though. I usually run the rookie/gun combo but with a couple of midpricers in there, and mor eoften than not it's these midpricers that cost me. I'll probably just take a punt this year.

Re: Rookies on the field

I have 3.

Heppell - DEF
Swallow - MID
Prestia - FWD

I would expect that all 3 should rather consistently hold their spot in their team barring injury.

I would think if you are going to start a rookie they would need to be best 22 without doubt because you don't want to have to try and cover for rookies that either get dropped or can't get a game in the first place.

Will defintley need to watch as much of the GC ast possible, but if they get knocked out of the NAB in round one that will make it very hard. Personally I only picked Barlow last year because he had some lovely touches in a quarter of Freo that I watched (so I guess I was lucky). There will be a lot of luck in it this year.

Re: Rookies on the field

If we include Ottens then i've got six starters. 3 on backline 2 in middle and 1 in the fordward line.

Re: Rookies on the field

Well, 5 under DWD's method of thinking, but I'd hardly classify Otten, Harris or Krakouer as rookies. Even guys like Coad, Callinan, Duigan, Richardson, Mzungu and Puopolo aren't really 'rookies', they are far safer picks than guys straight out the TAC Cup. Heppell would be my only true rookie starting on the field.
