Who's gonna win, even though it is only a scratch match. What can we read from the result.
I would love to say the Eagles to win absolutelt but I can't really choose, it'll be a close game
Thoughts?

We've got plenty of players back so hopefully we can win.

This match will tell us how the eagles will go in 2001. We are still missing a few players but it would be foolish to think our best 22 would be available all season. We will usually be missing 2-3 players each game, as we are in this one. So if we win we can look forward to a decent season, if we lose we should start thinking who we will draft with our no.1 pick in the draft (that means we'll get the wooden spoon). Especially considering Adelaide is not really such a formidable opponent.

Don't know it you West Aussies are getting any coverage of the game over there but in Adelaide there's radio coverage. At half time the score is:

Adel 7.7 49
WC 2.5 17

Not a great game at the moment, low on intensity and plenty of mistakes. Crows just making a few less.

Bit more info, Adel. 174 possesions to WC 115. Marks 38 to 29. Morrison and Munro goals for WC, Ladhams has a couple for Adel. Ricciuto and McLeod doing well for the Crows, while Wirrpunda, Prior and Cousins okay for WC. Not much to write home about at the moment, oh, Wilson taken a couple of strong marks, hasn't been able to convert. And if I haven't mentioned it, there has been plenty of mistakes, both by hand and foot...

13 minute mark of 3rd quarter and Crows by 24 points, we've taken off a few of our better players and the ball is pretty much going up and down. Eagles struggling through centre half forward but good pass has found Wilson 40 out. He misses. 23 points the difference.

Good left foot goal to Edwards and the score is:

Adel. 8.8 56
WC 3.9 27

West Coast kicking with a 3 to 4 goal breeze this quarter. Rushed behind to Adelaide. Margin 30 points 19 minutes into 3rd Quarter.

First gamer Hayden Skipworth snaps a goal and Crows lead by 35, well into 3rd quarter. Lacklustre at the moment, the commentators have described it as "uninspiring". Not much clean footy.

Three quarter time siren

Adel. 9.8 63
WC 3.10 28

Best players in a second.

20 seconds in, West Coast kick a goal to Hunter?, great piece of play, quick out of centre and roved beautifully. Richardson answers a minute later for the Crows. Margin 35 points.

Couple of best players,

Adel

Edwards 30 possessions
Mcleod 23
Smart 17
Bickley 18
Shir 14

West Coast

Morrison 14 possessions
Cousins 21
Merenda 13
Jakovich 7

Inside 50's 40 to 25 Adelaide's way, centre breaks 9 to 4, also the Crows way.

West Coast seems to have given the game away, OR MAYBE JUST RESTING A FEW STARS IN THE LAST quarter, Merenda, Jako and Wirrpunda on bench for start of last quarter.

As I speak, Bode roves a ball nicely and handballs to Goodwin who strolls in for another goal.

Adel. 11.9 75
WC 4.10 34

9 and a half minutes in, goal to the Roo and Adel by 47 points. Coahes are trying a few things at the moment, Biglands and Ricciuto in the forward lines for the Crows.

The youngsters for the Eagles are trying hard, like Kerr, Haynes etc. but the Crows experienced midfielders are just controlling it at the moment.

Muffed kick out by Eagles, Biglands snaps goal. Commentators reckon Eagles are a rabble, plenty of worrying signs. Margin 54 points. Crows kicking with the wind now.

Kick out by Mcintosh intercepted by McLeod wko kicks goal from 50.

McLeod scintillating, finds Clarke leading out, but he kicks behind.

20 minute mark Adelaide 96, West Coast 34.

Munro slots through open goal, margin cut to 56. Sting has gone out of game. Seeming lack of structure has cost the Eagles, lots of short kicks, handballs, running round in circles. Nothing at half forward. Crows haven't been much better, just a little more polish, better, more solid all around the ground. Pleasing so far (for a Crows supporter)

thanks ant
munro seems likes hes got plenty of talent, hes not intimidated by the AFL level much, and hes quite atheletic

can you finish off by telling us how the young guys went?
haynes kerr galss etc

Final scores

Adelaide 14.12 96
West Coast 6.10 46

Wilson kicked goal right on the siren after getting rid of Stevens beautifully. Strong mark, good kick into the wind.

Well, good game from the Crows, solid, and an improved effort on last week. Hard to gauge though as the Eagles play was quite deplorable at times. Not a high standard game however the Crows had a few good signs. Eagles supporters should be hoping the team improves considerably by round one.

Edwards and McLeod shone with 40 and 30 possessions respectively. Not many players for Eagles got much of the ball, Morrison had 18 to lead them, a few others with around 15 possessions.

Goalkickers

Adelaide

Richo 2
Ladhams 2
McLeod 2
Singles the rest

West Coast

Munro 2
Wilson 1
Morrison 1
Merenda 1
Somebody else kicked one as well

That's it, sorry the news wasn't so good, but things can only go up.

Ah_19, yeah, well the coverage is mostly Adelaide based but Munro obviously was quite good with a couple of goals. I heard Kerr and Haynes names called a few times so they seemingly did alright, without setting the world on fire. There were a lot of young guys out there for the Eagles and they weren't able to dominate at any stage but picked a few touches along the way.

From reports there seemed to be a lack of passion and intensity when going into packs. It sounds like they were playing like it was a trial game, which of course it was, but you'd think they might have gone in a bit harder (I'm talking about all the Eagles players and some of the Crows)

Anyway, don't despair, just hope that things will turn around.

Cheers

Were any "proper" forwards playing...as in Cummings or Matera brothers.....thats a shocking score line!!!

how did merenda play generally?...im really interested in him and prior...seem like they could be really useful if they dont get injured.

None of them played Visro, Wilson was good up forward for you, took a couple of marks both on the lead and contested, while Merenda had a handy 3rd quarter. The Crows defence pretty much controlled whatever ball was coming into your forward line, with the odd bit of good play producing your goals.

By the sounds of it you've got a bit to come back, Matera, Cummings, Gardiner (sorry, I should have mentioned earlier that he didn't play), Turnbull etc. But you should hope so after that performance.

If you think that this non-event practise game would have told you how well Eagles will go in 2001, then you should worry. It was by all accounts a dreadful game.

If I were you I wouldn't take it too seriously. You had no Gardiner, Cummings or either Matera. Crows changed about six players over at half time, not because they were going poorly, but only because it was treated purely as practise.

BTW, I'm not at all sure about your conviction that Crows are not formidable opposition, at least at Footy Park. You have perhaps been listening too much to Victorians or Power fans. Crows did in doggies, nearly did Carlton at Optus, and overcame your (depleted) side by 50 points. We came 11th last year and have had only one the poor game first up in the preseason, against a good side in the Lions.

From my perspective, this means that Crows are not that bad. Certainly they will be hard to beat at Footy Park. That is what your side, missing several good players, had to achieve. That they fell short is not that significant, in my view. Good luck for the season proper, Eagles.

I agree Crows.ok, I think the Crows will be hard to beat at Footy Park and will have a good season. Our preseason form hasn't been terrible by any means as you pointed out, and we've improved with each game. I think some of the Eagle fans may have underestimated that coming in. Also, some of the players they had coming back, I don't think have had much game time this year, so it's hard to expect them to come in and dominate (true???)

The Eagles will certainly get better, they have to, because the performance this afternoon was by a team destined for the bottom two, and I don't think they are that bad.

Sorry if that sounded too harsh, but by formidable i was thinking more about teams like Melbourne, essendon and brisbane, who will probably dominate the season. The crows will certainly be hard to beat at home, and will most likely finish higher on the ladder than the eagles this season.

Always nice to hear an opposition fan saying the eagles performed worse than what they are capable of. Thanks

I was at the game, unfortunately for you guys your boys really didnt stand up today. I know it was just a trial, but from 5 mins into the opening qtr, you could see a hammering on how the teams were playin. However, with a few players to come yous may be alright.

P.s whoever asked bout merenda, he didnt do much, but took 1 or 2 marks inside 50, didnt kick that greatly.....
