No. When Paine started he did open the batting and scored a double hundred really early on against WA, with Clingeleffer the keeper. Then Clingeleffer moved on and they tried to have their cake and eat it too. It failed spectacularly.

The batting cupboard is bare and our vet bats that failed in the 09 ashes are not going to get us over the line 4 years on against an even more potent england than we faced in 2009.

Even more potent England? I would challenge that. Got smashed by Pakistan in a 3 test series and then struggled to 1-1 against Sri Lanka.

Don't really care much for ODI/T20 form.

I'd say England arn't in the greatest knick at the moment either.

.

England's bowlers in English conditions haven't flopped lately, in those conditions they are very tough and start as huge fav's to knock over our dodgy top 6.

Remember i was also talking only about england bowlers against our top 6 not the team overall, england bowlers actually did their job in asia but the batsmen let them down time after time.

I haven't read this whole thread but ed would be perfect in English conditions as he knows how to leave. This is why usman would also be perfect.

Opening in test cricket is all about keeping your wicket and ed is perfect at that

They'll be fine at home.

Australia's batting would have to improve 100 percent to challenge England at home.

Usman nicks of continually, he would not be perfect for english condidions.

How do people rate Joe Burns? Averages 45 at FC at just 22. Statistically better than many of our other young batting prospects it seems.

I didn't mean he should be in the side now. I was more just thinking about how bereft we are of quality young batsmen. Do people think he has a shot in the national set up further down the track?

If he can back it up next season.

We're not sure of young batsmen who have had one very good season.

Yes. And also you can't expect young inexperienced batsmen however good they've been at Shield to perform consistently and to a high level first up in international cricket. That needs to be done by the experienced players, but it's only Clarke that is capable of scoring big and often. It's a problem that young players coming into the team have... so little time to find their feet due to the vagaries of the rest of the line-up.

Well said sir. I hope Cowan can have a big home series and earn himself a spot in England next year. I think he's got the technique and the temperament, just needs a breakthrough innings. The fact that his form in the shield last year was so good (had basically become him taking the piss out of the opposition) means he should be an automatic solution this summer.
If he continues to struggle, send him back to shield cricket and try something else. But at this stage I think he's got some promise, just needs to deliver.

If Mitch Marsh begins to focus more on batting in the future, he's got the technique to become a very good international standard batsman. He's someone that could be involved in the 'changing of the guard' in terms of our batting lineup over the next 2-3 years.

I haven't seen much of him, but I liked what I've seen. Reckon he's got a good technique and an even better future.

Is this 100% true? Has already been dismissed a couple of times in his short career not offering a shot.

Definitely agree. I watched him in the BBL, towards the end of the tournament he was ultra consistent with the bat and made a a few 50s, and a 77* in the final IIRC. Playing all good cricket shots. Has a very solid technique but can also hit it out of the park. I'll be watching his development very keenly, as he should be featuring in the next World Cup in 2015. ;)

I've watched hin in the u19 world cup as well as in shield streams and bbl and i reckon his technique has become less flexible. He looks more like Watson now doesn't seem to use his feet as well as he did. More inclined to plonk his foot down the pitch now. I really hope i'm wrong as I thought he played spin in an exemplary manner as a kid.

I think he needs a longer go. Tough initiation, and just needs a big score to build that confidence.

I think the fact that between the Indian series and the WI tour he went back and dominated Shield Cricket, immediately puts him well ahead of his pursuers.

If he'd gone back and struggled, then I think there would be question marks. Same goes for Ponting, its a huge feather in his cap that he went back and smacked a few shield hundreds between test series to show that he is still a class above the blokes chasing his spot.

I am not sure about that, England would obviously be strong favourites. However I think that the English can be bowled out, IF Australia bowl the way that they have over the summer. Get a bit of swing they could be able to cause trouble to the English.

If our bowlers can last 5 tests...

cowan averages 34 from his 12 tests (1 century) and has a 1st class average of 40.

i know there's a perceived reputation that he compliments Warner at the top of the innings and he can chew up alot of balls etc.

for me his average of 34 is not good enough to retain his place in the side.

his fielding is only adequate (he has dropped a couple and pulled off a great one).

he may well be good around the aussie changerooms etc.

he may well have survived the axe because of the departures of ponting and hussey and the regularity of watson out of the side and also with no one knocking down the door in shield cricket.

most people on here have picked him in their squad for the tours of india and england and i too believe he will tour, but he must stand up and make a significant contribution sooner rather than later as he turns 31 prior to the ashes series.

i hope for cowan's sake and the aussies that he can succeed (as he can cah in with 18 tests in the next 15 months).

this is the time for cowan , as this is the first time in quite a while that picking the top 7 in the batting order is anyone's guess.
