No. When Paine started he did open the batting and scored a double hundred really early on against WA, with Clingeleffer the keeper. Then Clingeleffer moved on and they tried to have their cake and eat it too. It failed spectacularly.

I think most people could've caught those ones though.

The batting cupboard is bare and our vet bats that failed in the 09 ashes are not going to get us over the line 4 years on against an even more potent england than we faced in 2009.
Even more potent England? I would challenge that. Got smashed by Pakistan in a 3 test series and then struggled to 1-1 against Sri Lanka.

Don't really care much for ODI/T20 form.
I'd say England arn't in the greatest knick at the moment either.
I haven't read this whole thread but ed would be perfect in English conditions as he knows how to leave. This is why usman would also be perfect.
Opening in test cricket is all about keeping your wicket and ed is perfect at that
I didn't mean he should be in the side now. I was more just thinking about how bereft we are of quality young batsmen. Do people think he has a shot in the national set up further down the track?
If he can back it up next season.
We're not sure of young batsmen who have had one very good season.
Yes. And also you can't expect young inexperienced batsmen however good they've been at Shield to perform consistently and to a high level first up in international cricket. That needs to be done by the experienced players, but it's only Clarke that is capable of scoring big and often. It's a problem that young players coming into the team have... so little time to find their feet due to the vagaries of the rest of the line-up.
How do people rate Joe Burns? Averages 45 at FC at just 22. Statistically better than many of our other young batting prospects it seems.

I haven't seen much of him, but I liked what I've seen. Reckon he's got a good technique and an even better future.

Definitely agree. I watched him in the BBL, towards the end of the tournament he was ultra consistent with the bat and made a a few 50s, and a 77* in the final IIRC. Playing all good cricket shots. Has a very solid technique but can also hit it out of the park. I'll be watching his development very keenly, as he should be featuring in the next World Cup in 2015.![]()
They'll be fine at home.
Australia's batting would have to improve 100 percent to challenge England at home.
I am not sure about that, England would obviously be strong favourites. However I think that the English can be bowled out, IF Australia bowl the way that they have over the summer. Get a bit of swing they could be able to cause trouble to the English.
