Pretty poor the league can cancel all senior to thirds and womens footy yet juniors can continue in a region that is hot with Covid-19?
Surely it's about income and not community interest when this goes on.
Unfortunately you can't rely on commonsense when it comes to money or the general population making decisions on whether their kids should play in a plague.

I might have the record for most posts in a season but surely you have record for most words used over a season.

Yeah im still the most annoying poster and on some people’s dart board. That title will be difficult to win off me. Plus I do need to watch my back at a few clubs and stand against walls for fear of being ambushed.

I’m always good for some Friday banter.

Maybe a few clubs need to understand that their club do not run the EDFL.
And they are unhappy with the decisions and the running of the league , then do something about it.

Well, I think they may have more to fear than how the EDFL is being run now, wait till the 22 clubs who are going to learn from this COVID period and come together as a block and analyse the constitution, Bi Laws and get advice about how they can:

• Get advice on having better representation on the board
• Have the constitution and Bi Laws adjusted if necessary to ensure situations where the fabric of the competition is up for debate like shortened seasons, salary caps, points caps etc.. are enshrined in the constitution with a better voting mechanism to make sure the elite clubs don't get to ride over minority interests

This is just the beginning of a new era where the "possibility" for someone like Larkin (just a hypothetical) to call board members to pressure decisions like we must have juniors hours before a vote couldn't happen.

Lots of lawyers floating around the top end of the EDFL town, Larkin, Kent, Shinners and the majority clubs are getting played for fools.

The big fight will be to win majority board representation and then to exercise that power to get a points equalisation strategy or caps on the number of junior kids at each club to spread them around the clubs more evenly to stop the competition being ripped apart. If they don't it is nigh on possible for anyone other than the top 4 clubs to win a flag into the future, those elite clubs either need to move into an elite super league or participate in a more even playing field where all clubs if they work hard have a chance at the ultimate success in Premier.

Mick McGuane, Potter their players and fans don't want to rock up each year where there are only 2-4 games a year where they wake up with butterflies in the belly knowing they have a tough challenge ahead and will get tested, they want a thriving more even competition where other clubs can keep the dream alive of knocking Keilor/Abers off at Keilor/Abers it's what keeps a lot of clubs volunteers and administrators going that chance to get better and one day be as good as the power clubs.

Privately after other clubs take the piss and bag the power clubs of Keilor, Strathmore, Abers and Greenvale they actually really respect them and aspire to be like them its what keeps a lot of people in the game. They are great well run local footy clubs fullstop.

BUT the gap is growing and one of the important mandates for the EDFL governing body is to oversee reasonable equalisation mechanisms like a fair points system and a salary cap so it's not 2-4 games a year that really get the juices going for Keilor or Abers.

There are two primary ways the competition is already ripping apart:

1. Elite clubs have lots more juniors and charging much higher fees because they are the club of choice parents want to take their kids as success breeds success.
2. Then because of point 1. the elite clubs end up with a much higher representation of kids in the professional TAC, VFL and AFL system who end up flowing back as 1 pointers to the elite clubs and to compete the challenger clubs have to recruit a 5-6 point player to compete like for like. Put 5 elite ex AFL, VFL players into a Keilor or Abers a competing lower club would need to suck up 25 points of the 47 allowed compared to the 5 points an elite club does.

Let's take Abers as an example but same follows for Strathmore, Keilor and to a lesser degree Greenvale. (Marby coming)

You must be silly if you think it cost nothing to run a junior program. Have you ever been on a committee. It cost clubs money to put every team on the park not just the seniors. But you keep pushing that barrow that junior footy is there to fund senior footy.
Maybe that’s why those clubs have elite kids because they spend money on their juniors to help them develop them. Plus most junior teams only allow 24 players each week so I don’t think teams would have 30. So that’s $3k less per team over 22 teams is $66k so your maths is already wrong. That just proves you no nothing about junior footy.

Come along to a clubs junior training session. Close to a 100% turnout where I am and thats the same at all the others that I have heard from.

There may be the odd parent who is having an anxiety attack but just like with school they have the option of not letting little Johnny play and of course their fees will be refunded.

It's one thing to train or got to school, it's another to play. Kids who go to school are crossing over with the same kids, so there is decent containment of interaction. When you push out to playing the kids cross over with three teams in two weeks and any speed could be extreme and uncontrollable.

It's not about people having anxiety about the situation, it's about risk mitigation and protecting the vulnerable in society.

You are fairly right in regards to numbers, most clubs have 80-90% attendance to training, doesn't mean that it right to play though.

Maybe it's time for a financial cap on junior registration so clubs can't profiteer off them and all the work volunteers do week in week out.

I would be interested to know if ALL clubs did an anonymous player survey as this is a great idea to see the real number of players who would play for no payments and risk get the virus. I’m hearing some clubs were keen but is that a true indication of the players supporting a season or certain individuals in a small minority that are not players. Keeping in mind ALL players and clubs should have to sign a stat dec stating no payments have been made (or if they have they are disclosed into 2021 cap) and anyone caught recieve huge suspension.
Some players could have family members that are sick, elderly or whatever. Jobs were they cannot play sport due to covid, etc etc. Yes players might tell a coach they will play for fear of being victimised so a survey is a great tool to iuse.

If true, these clubs are acting like children and chucking a hissy fit because their mother said no to a lollipop at the supermarket. When are they going to realise that it's not about them nor the players wanting to play, it's about the health and safety that needs to be the priority here.

18.5 are considered as seniors by many, they should not be playing

When you are so seniors focussed you may forget where those players came from. The U18.5 is the hardest age to keep players interested in footy as they have so many other options around them. They have yr12 school or new job, a car, going out with girlfriend or clubbing. You will not get anyone playing for the seniors from this group, bottom or top age, if they stop for a year. The drop out rate from U16 is huge, 29 sides in u17 to 16 sides in u19 last year. As it is a third of clubs did not have u19 last year and to stop them playing that number will surely grow. The last 4 weeks training has encouraged kids to stay connected to the club and playing this season will ensure they stay.
But then again you might be right. These 16 year olds should be told they cannot play but their 15 year old mates are encouraged to play.

Being a former VAFA player and now follower, I am on the outside looking in, however living in the district, I do have an interest in local footy.

Perhaps it’s time for our two regional football competitions the have a chat. Yes, I’m suggesting dialogue between WRFL and EDFL to formulate a hybrid competition for 2021 (and possibly for 2022).

I understand that Essendon won’t allow clubs into their sphere if they are not promoting/teaching/developing junior footballers. Mercenaries are therefore, in the main, trimmed.

Essendon also won’t allow junior teams to play in their competition if their senior teams are in another competition, viz PEGS (VAFA with juniors welcome in the WRFL), Therry Penola (VAFA with their juniors happily in NFNL). There are other examples of which we are all aware concerning both of our local competitions.

Perhaps the hierarchies of both of our local competitions could broaden their outlook thus supporting all local teams, both junior and senior. It would be a great opportunity as other codes are watching and ever ready to swoop.

Examples: -

The higher divisions of the newly proclaimed NWFA [for the want of a suitable acronym] (NorthWest Football Alliance) to consist of clubs with junior teams.

Lower divisions to consist of clubs without juniors, no promotion to the higher 3 or 4 divisions until that club has a viable junior pathway.

Clubs without juniors to have their own promotion/relegation within their own sections.

Juniors to be run either as WRFL, EDFL (or a combine).

After the 2nd year, the two competitions would split back into their former competitions, or if it works and everybody’s happy, just leave it.

I just can’t see players wanting to play this type of season with nothing at stake. It would be more 2nds & 3rds players I’m assuming.
