You guys showed signs of being a top 8 team last year in a few matches, you just weren't able to maintain the consistency. IMO Hird isn't the answer.

Hocking, Howlett and Watson are real in and under types of players,
Heppell will be a quality Utility,
Essendon in the past 20years have always had really good key pos players and goal kicking rucks, in Lloyd, Lucas, Wellman, Fletcher, Salmon and barnes and 1 of the great Utilities in Hird, never had the real gem midfielders, but have had solid contributers like J Johnson, Misiti, Mercuri, Long ect
so really we have stuck with what has worked for us Essendon and in my mind we are tracking along with our young KPP and Mids perfectly and the timing will come together perfectly.
If we do get a AA mid it will just be a bonus, but very happy with our young players.

Hird was smart enough to establish a team of coaches, they are real quality with Bomber and McCartney both fantastic teachers of the game, Goodwin was already helping Craig coach players like Vince, MacKay, Van Belo ect Wallis and Wellman who Melbourne were very upset about leaving.
By Hird Coaching secured Jetta and Stanton, players were very unsettled in the last 1/2 of 2010, includin Hille and Fletcher.

Everything has been better already, When Hird played he read the play better then anybody, he knows positioning, he also read the game better then any captain I have seen, as soon as opposition teams started to get on top, He would put himself right in the thick of the action and always get the clearances, and before you know it he would be getting the most vital goals.
So I think he always was a step ahead of the play and game, so he wont sit back and watch teams pile on 8+ consecutive goals.

No that was no laughing matter, the crows record against essendon in Melbourne on the other hand is ****ing hilarious.

Leagues worst midfield.
Take out Watson and it’s the equivalent of the best VFL midfield. Bottom 3 this season easy.
And to think they could have had Dimma, but instead got Hird. Deep down the Bombers must be hurting big time.

I would take 3 years of Knights, and then get Hird and Bomber,
100% of the time before having Hardwick 3 years ago and onwards.
every Bomber fan would agree with me. Essendon training with Hawthorn, Pass on that every day of the week.
take out Riewoldt and Richmond spine would be, thats right what spine.

What has Dimma done so far?
Lost 9 games straight, went 6 and 16 and got smashed by the team with the supposed worst midfield in the AFL.
Geez you tugger fans are sooo easy to please these days. I suppose that what over 3 DECADES without a flag will do to you...

Apart from Keilor under 9`s what has Hird done to warrant all this adulation of a gun senior AFL coach.
The worst thing Hird can do is have the club make finals in 2011. It's clear that the list isn't good enough to sustain a finals campaign, or continually reach the top 8 year after year.
If he manages to sneak in like Knights managed to in 09 with only 10 wins, then all the fans will again think that success is right around the corner. It isn't.
Hird has a fantastic legacy, but it will all go up in smoke very quickly a la Voss if he stuffs this up.
I see Essendon around the 9th -14th mark this year. I expect to see improvement in their younger players a la Hurley, Melksham, Colyer etc. So much so that the raw talent of their youngsters should provide them with some good wins. However i can also see the large amounts of dead wood in their list doing sweet FA in some games, resulting in some pretty shocking losses as well.
The sooner McVeigh, Welsh, Lovett-Murray and all the other middle-aged plodders are removed the better. I can't believe some of them still get games...
