But again Dan you are moulding the statistics to make Essendon look better. Its strange you picked 1981....er....NOT! Because before 1981, Carlton dominated Essendon like no other period in the two clubs histories. If you take out those 10 straight wins to the bombers that you had from 81 to 85, then its even again (17-17-1). And I think its fair to take it from 1986, just like you do from 1981. That's because we've both won two flags since then (Carlton - 87, 95; Essendon - 93, 2000). You see, its not hard to change stats around a bit to suit either side.

In the end, all I can say is look at my signature. Do Essendon have the wood on Carlton?....I think not!

In recent history have they? Well not if you take this year as an example (and I have just as much reason to take the stats from this year only, as you do taking it from 98 onwards, as I do taking it from 86 onwards, as you do taking it from 81 onwards, as I do taking it from 70 onwards etc etc etc etc - you get the picture.)

By taking the stats from 1986, you are just as guilty as me taking them from 1981!

I told you why I chose 1981. It is because that was the beginning of the Sheedy era, and the turning point in the Essendon vs Carlton rivalry.

If we just happened to beat you 10 times in a row, well, you'll just have to accept that, because it is part of history.

For the purposes of our discussion, which year do you honestly think is the most appropriate to choose, when deriving Ess v Carl stats? 1986 or 1981? Unbiasly.

Surely it has to be 1981, for the reasons I outlined. These days you see lots of Essendon stats from 1981, primiarly because that happened to be the year that Sheedy started coaching. It's not my fault that we just happaened to beat you 10 times in a row over that period!

Sheedy has always had a pretty good record over Carlton, and I expect that to continue, hence the use of stats from 1981 onwards.

I wasn't completely serious taking the stats from 86 Dan, I was just copying what you were doing (ie. trying to make the stats work to Carlton's advantage). I dunno if we're ever going to agree on this one though mate!

The only stat that matters is the stat that ONE of us (either you or me) will be saying to the other after the season. That being :

17-16.

Yeah it freaks me out. All my football following life, even in the tough times like 89-91 or 97-98 I have always taken comfort in the fact that we have (either outright or equally) the most flags. If that ends this year I will be very very upset!

Or 16-16 (Brisbane Fitzroy - 9)

If that happened, it would be the Brisbane Lions FIRST premiership. They are a new club TT.

But, I have a feeling that one way or the other, there will be set of supporters that will be saying "17-16" after the season.

That's why I want to win. The last time we held the premiership record OUTRIGHT was after our first flasg in 1897. Ever since then, we have been level, but never in front.

Hopefully, you Carlton fans will know what it is like to have the "second-most" after this season. ;)

Next year, Blues2001.

September 2001 is the learning experience Richmond needs to become the undisputed power in AFL Football.

One must crawl before one can walk - one must walk before one can STOMP.

You don't need finals experience to win finals TigerTank.

You've got to take your opportunities when they present themselves a la Melbourne Storm 1999.

If you treat 2001 as a learning experience, you will be destined to fail.

Many people would have been excused for thinking 1993 was going to be a learning exprience for Essendon, but we decided to take the opportunity, and were duly successful.

The only sure things I know of are death and taxes

If I am awake enough to count, should the Port Adelaide Football Club Inc. win the flag, it will be our 35th premiership.:D

Sorry to disappoint but it's actually Big Al. Seriously though thanks for the responses I thought this topic might get a few people involved. I honestly hope Essendon do win back to back flags but like a few people have already pointed out, any thing can happen in September! Go Dons.

Big Al,

Just what what we need here - another Essendon supporter.

I was just thinking the other day You know what Bigfooty needs? I reckon it needs more Essendon supporters!

Lo and behold, it would appear that all our prayers have been answered.

Love the HRT cars in your avatar. Let me guess, you also barrack for Manchester United, Ferrari F1, the Brisbane Broncos, Dallas Cowboys? Am I close?

Warm regards,

Given Injuries to Hawthorn it will be a learning experience for them too. Not that you want the team to be thinking that, They have to think this is their last chance for a while.... But I suppose that's true for richmond.

You're right Pess. As a supporter, its hard not to feel proud of you club if you can get through hardships (injuries etc) whilst the players are busting their gut to achieve something. I'm proud of my club for not falling in a hole after putting in an excellent 1999, but coming away with little. They've backed it up...been up for quite a while now...and still hungry for success. This year has been tough, and we have lost key players for extended periods of time. For us to still be a game clear on top, is an achievement in itself in my books. I'm extremely proud of what they are/have doing/done.

Hawthorn are doing it tough at the moment...but if they can get through it show they want to go places as a team...you'll feel immensely proud.

Topdon

I think you are far too one eyed topdon. Look around and smell theflowers my boy, because at the end of the year, you will have tears in your eyes.

But, alas, the boys from Brisbane will give you a reason to develop hindsight.
