Of course, you're probably having severe problems figuring out who wrote what since it was LongJohn that was making comments about Essendon's finals performances, not me. But anyway, I'll argue with you on your level and I'll settle for 4 chokes for 2 premierships every six years. Just borrowing from LongJohn, it's a better deal than 9 chokes for one flag for the Bombers (apologies to Arch, the Dutchman, and Dan24 who I have a huge amount of respect for and can actually understand and argue a point and back it up with a logical argument).

Regards
Shinboners

p.s. Anyone who hates Carlton should check out today's InPress (Melbourne street mag) on page 70 for Footy Mouth's take on that painting of Carlton's team of the century.

Sorry SB I was confused, there are so many North supporters on this forum.
Easier at one of your games though. Hardley any turn up.

Shinboners,
that's if you want describe years when a team doesn't make the finals as "chokes" - yeah, I know you're taking the piss, you don't seem to have quite the chip on your shoulder that LJ does.

Dave

BTW, it's five chokes in seven years too, don't forget '94!!

I wish we could all stop using the word "choke" so baltantly.

It seems that whenever a team loses a final, be it close or not, we say they "choked". That's stupid. I mean, someone has to lose, right.

Shinboner, I am aware of Norths sensational finals record. You don't don't need to defend it. Under Pagan, North is 13-5 in finals.

When I was having a go at North, I was mainly having a go at that idiotic "Longjohn", who seems to think that a one point loss to the top team in 1996 constitutes choking. Sanme in 1999 with Kouta taking pack marks and Whitnall bombing 60 metre goal on the boundary, while the Bombers have 9 more shots at goal. How that consitutes a choke when the Dons clearly performed and the opposition ws "red-hot" is beyond me.

He is blissfuly unaware of Essendons final performances.

Bloodstained Angel and Grendel,

I take your point in 1996 about Hawthorn. I think Essendon was a much better team than the Hawks in 1996, but there is no doubt the Hawkers played a great game in the Qualifying final. Like you said, they probably played better than the Bombers two weeks later.

Essendon could have been eliminated, as Grendel pointed out. As I have said quite a few times, we weren't that good in 1996. But, then again, If Wanaganeens las tminute shot against Brisbane went through for a goal, we wouldn't have been in a situation where elimination was a factor. Instead, we would have played Carlton in the second week insteand of West Coast. Looking at the respective results, there seems little doubr we would have thrashed the Blues.

Shinboner

I would almost give a nut to see Footy Mouth's effort - is there any way you can scan it somewhere? Jeez I've been away a longtime - forgot all about Footy Mouth - Fred Negro would have gone absolutely sick the first 5 weeks of the season - would have loved to have seen his wall on the side of the POW in StKilda.

BA, Grendel, Dan24.

It may be a fact that Hawthorn should have beaten the Swans in 96 and would have if Bung hole hadn't done his knee again. It may be a fact that Hawthorn worried the Swans more than us in the respective games.

But it is also a fact that Essendon were 11 points up with about three minutes to play despite having about 15 fit players available most of the 2nd half. It was a monumental effort to keep in touch let alone deserve to win. Gotta love those dubious free kicks out of the centre when it counts hey BA? Hats off to Lockett though - great kick...

Still, as gutting as it was to lose, I remember being immensely proud of the boys that night.

1996 - two 1 point losses from winning positions in the dying seconds 2 weeks running - don't get much more heartbreaking than that... Still, we would have been humped by the Roos the following week so it matters not a lot (unlike last year...oh well)

Dutch

Ps. Thanks for the nice words Shinboner - you aren't RooBoy on BomberTalk by any chance?

Just on the subject of "choking", the relevant thing to do is define what constitutes a "choke". There was a similar debate in a cricket forum regarding South Africa. Many people regard them as chokers, but I'm not one of them.

In my opinion, choking is when a superior team throws away a big (ie finals) game after being in control because of it is mentally afraid or unprepared to win. In other words, when a team that was better in the minor rounds loses to an inferior opponent in the major round because it was tentative, scared to perform, and either lost it in a close one or threw it away after leading. That's a choke.

I don't really believe in the choking tag that gets bandied around frequently and you can decide for yourself whether you agree with the above parameters and what, if any, team(s) it would apply to..

Thanks Dave and Dan24,

For the Dutchman, I don't have a scanner, but is there any way I can post the thing to you? If you don't want to put your postal address on this board, you could maybe e-mail your details to Arch and ask him to pass them onto me.

But if that's too difficult to organise, here's my description of it. I'm not too sure if you ever saw the painting that Carlton commissioned for their team of the century (they're all standing around the club dressing room look as smug as ever), but Freddy Negro's effort involved the team dancing in a circular conga line.....without their shorts. You can imagine the rest.

Oh, and I'm not on Bomber Talk.

Hey Dutchy - what can I say about the umpiring in those frantic final minutes except that it was nice to get a favour from the men in white for a change

I agree with you about 'what may have happened' perhaps it was meant to be, Essendon would have been slaughtered by the Roos had they made it.

Instead we got the first genuinely competitive and exciting GF in years and a fitting showcase for the game in its Centenary Year.

But don't get me started on '96 - I go all misty-eyed !!!

Does anyone seriously believe one year on, that Essendon can entertain the "possibility" of going through the seaosn undefeated in 2001 ? Was 2000 their one and only chance at history?

Sadly, I believe so, but who knows?????
