I think Carlton's pace around the ground will worry us alot. As soon as a Garlett/Yarran/Armfield etc get the ball over the back of a pack they are incredibly hard to stop. With Dempsey out and us not being the quickest of teams anymore, I would say this would be one of Carlton's major strengths and is something they could exploit us on if they come in breathing fire.

This is a danger game and if we want to be a top 8 team let alone a top 4, we must win these 50/50 games. Carlton lack some of our class and polish but they are not to be under estimated. They are very dangerous running into open space and we need to make sure we flood back and play with a Goddard or a Heppell behind the ball possibly to close down the spaces for them.

Having said all this I'm very exited to see The Derp get the nod and i think even with his relatively light frame he could be a huge threat tonight, dare I say that he is probably our only 'pure forward' out of our key position stocks playing tonight and would probably have a bit of a better idea on how to lead into space and how to present at the ball. (I'm praying all of this more than expecting however considering how young he is and this being his first game in a forward-line with the presence of the likes of a Hurley and Crameri.)

All in all, should be a good game and hopefully we get over the line in a good performance by the boys. In Jobe we trust.

What are the likely matchups for our forwards?

I would guess that Henderson will go to Hurley and Jamieson will go to Crameri
Daniher wont get much attention because he hasn't gained any respect as a player, probably white will line up on him even though Daniher has him by almost 10cm white is very good with body position.
Note: this could easily change after/during the game, re Daniher

Probably something like:

Jamison - Hurley
Henderson - Daniher
Touhy - Crameri
Yarran - Davey
White - Winderlich
Armfield - Winderlich

That is a rough guess.

Wouldn't have thought Winderlich would command a double team but you never know I guess..........

I don't think Armfield will go to Winderlich. Armfield plays predominantly forward of centre, generally tagging the oppositions HB (i.e. Hurn from WCE) so with Dempsey out I think Armfield will go to Hibberd.
Yarran also plays forward of centre these days so he probably wont go to Davey.

Jamo - Hurley
White - Crameri
Hendo - Daniher
Davey - Tuohy
Also, Simpson & Walker have been playing HB/back pocket under Mick so they're both a chance to play on one of your forwards too.

And also, shatterpoint has been telling you guys that Waite, Judd, Murphy & Walker possibly wont play. He is notoriously pessimistic and very negative - so don't buy it.
Walker has been named and none of our emergencies are really a replacement for him. I expect Walker to play.
The other 3 will play - despite Shatterpoint's 'gut feelings'.

Essendon will be planning for your best team so all planning will be focussed towards all of them playing.

For mine if Walker did leave the track with hamstring soreness then it will be stupid to risk him 24 - 30 hours later. If he just left the track early and Carlton were trolling the media then there is no doubt he'll play.

We'll find out in a few hours.

EDIT: Wow, the most Captain Obvious post I've put up for a long long time.

expecting michael hurley to have a big game....

7, 9 & 10 news all showed Walker leaving training with the whole playing group on last nights bulletins.
Superfooty (who broke the story) said he didn't train at all - which has been proven to be false.

Do you think that the Blues will opt for the Heavy Watson tag and go head to head everywhere else or potentially tag Stanton as well? Swans let Stanton off the chain and put all their tagging work into Watson, this obviously worked it will be interesting to see if the Blues go down the same path. I think you guys will win and win well.
Bombers by 24+.

He's one of those few players who you just can't tag, so if anything they'll clamp down on Stants.

At the risk of repeating what has been said and sounding cliche, this game is massive.

Maybe more so because of the rivalry, but if we win tonight it will help us out mathematically and just as importantly with confidence.

so... anyone starting to get a bit toey?

I am in a wretched mood, and just about ready to physically rip the head off the shoulders of the next person who interacts with me.

We must be playing Carlton tonight or something.

Just got back from the gym, had a shower (ladies), and changed into my Essendon gear with the new 140 jumper.
