Essendon's massive following

Hawthorn's membership was 12,000 and constant for a few years up till '96, that's either as all-time greats or also-rans. It still wasn't the worst. I believe Richmond were 3,500 or something at one point. Thje highest was 25,000 or something. I think credit is due to the efforts Hawk's management, especially compared to Melbourne who just thought it would 'happen'

All the clubs got a scare after 1996 and all have gone up.

Some people still believe the Hawthorn revival will wane but I think the signs are that we could go on to be the equal of the so-called 'power' clubs, aspecially if signs of success come to fruition.

Ian Dicker identified the power clubs as Essendon, Carlton, West Coast, Adelaide, Port, Sydney and Brisbane.

I think if hawthorn had ben in the VFL as long as the other clubs this would have happened already. You really need success over a few generations to build up support

Hawthorn have been in the VFL/AFL since 1925. The reason their following has been small is that for a large part of that they were very unsuccessful. It's only been in the last 30 years they've had a tradition of success. Had they won flags from the outset they would probably have a bigger following.

Gutsy effort! Bravo!

MM and the Eagles were the beneficiaries of some ridiculous draft concessions in the late 80s and early 90s that left them with virtually the perfect them for 4 - 5 years.

Not taking anything away from them - they still had to work their guts out and win those flags - Hawthorn (early) Geelong, Essendon and North were tough opposition.

But I think it leaves the Eagles in a tough spot now. Their supporters expect to win all the time with no transitional period. In footy that doesn't happen.

I think the next flag the Eagles win will be the one they really truly deserve - and one that on one can grumble about.

People only hate the Eagles because of this perceived inequity - at time when Geelong (who hadn't been successful for long time) were having their time at the top and when Fitzroy was dissappearing.

Anyway, gutsy call mate

Samsgal, I think I know you from elsewhere...(if so) you tell me not to bag Carlton and then come here and bag Essendon? That's no balance.
You say supporters who aren't paid-up members
are bandwagon jumpers? I think not. I for one am not a member, is it my fault I wasn't able to fork out $110 (or whatever) this year? And living in the country, can't get to games anyway? And though I am not a member, I am an extremely passionate supporter and have supported the Dons since birth and always will.
Grendel, you say no Long, no Essendon. Not true - Michael Long didn't play all this year and look at our success. Plus he missed many games last year, and although we didn't win where it counted, we still had a successful year. And Alessio may not have had his best game in the prelim. So what. He didn't cause us to lose! Shannon Grant, at one stage in the season, picked up ZILCH possesions. No-one made that into a big deal. People are looking for someone to blame or ridicule for that loss - it was no-one's fault except the whole team. Forget individuality.
And Eagles Fan, you can never say that the Premiership is rightly a team's in any particular year. If the premiership was *rightly* ours last year, we would have won it. You can deserve it but you never own it before you win it. Such as Essendon deserved it this year.

Ah, Drakey, the 4 most successful Victorian based clubs are the 4 clubs with the 4 biggest supporter bases.

This odesn't make them frontrunners. In any sport anywhere in the world, the more successful teams have more support than the less successful ones.

Collingwood have won 61% of their all time games and they have massive support. Would you call them frontrunners.

Rooboy,

WHAT AN OBSERVATION !! Another unregistered Essendon fan, you say. You should be in the bigfooty hall of fame for that comment.

What is your point exactly ?????

Bluecrow,

Fantastic performance in the finals in 1998 by the Crows. Superb. But over the course of the 6 month season, the Bulldogs probably showed that they were better than Adelaide. Adelaide showed they were better ON THE DAY. What that admittedly great performance has got to do with the other 6 months where the Bulldogs were better is beyond me.

As to how an inferior team can beat a better team, you ask ? It's called an upset.

An upset is when a less credentialled team against the odds wins a sporting contest. It happens in all sports.

I'm suprised. I though you would have heard of an upset. Upsets happen.....all the time in fact. If upsets didn't happen, then the most talented team would go 22-0 ever year.

Oh, but I forgot Adelaide beat the Bulldogs in a FINAL in 1998.

Apparently finals are different.
Apparently upsets don't happen in finals.
Apparently, the best team ALWAYS wins finals.
Apparently the best team of the years always wins the Grand Final.

Yep, sorry. Upsets apparently don't happen in finals matches.

Nah they were the same Loyal Supporters who stayed till the end of the Richmond v Essendon game in rd 22. Its amazing that Essendon supporters will queue up for days to get a ticket, yet if their team loses will leave early.

Congratulations to Hawthorn supporters for thanking their team last week after the game.

I hope our massive following turns up tommorrow..i hope we get at least 50,000...
Being in Sydney, I won't be there; but there's a pretty strong chance there'll be more than 50,000 there.

Having read this thread for the first time tonight, what's going on with it being dug up every year? Has the world gone mad?
