Hawthorn's membership was 12,000 and constant for a few years up till '96, that's either as all-time greats or also-rans. It still wasn't the worst. I believe Richmond were 3,500 or something at one point. Thje highest was 25,000 or something. I think credit is due to the efforts Hawk's management, especially compared to Melbourne who just thought it would 'happen'
All the clubs got a scare after 1996 and all have gone up.
Some people still believe the Hawthorn revival will wane but I think the signs are that we could go on to be the equal of the so-called 'power' clubs, aspecially if signs of success come to fruition.
Ian Dicker identified the power clubs as Essendon, Carlton, West Coast, Adelaide, Port, Sydney and Brisbane.
I think if hawthorn had ben in the VFL as long as the other clubs this would have happened already. You really need success over a few generations to build up support
