I was pretty positive last year about making finals and so did my usual thing and had a look at our list for 2017 now that it is finalised.

I am not as confident as I believe that the coaching group and other staff have a huge job ahead of them just to get some chemistry going within the playing group, then learning game plan and of course skill improvement. Some real leadership is going to be needed both on and off the field and some of the players have to really step up.

We will have four players that didn't play a game last year, (Elliott, Scharenberg, Keeffe,Thomas) and 12 new players, a lot will defend on existing players really standing up and improving.
I wonder whether that is the highest in changes to the list?

I am a bit concerned as not sure who can step up to a leadership role. Varcoe, Adams, Treloar, Sidebottom, Reid, Crisp are some that come to mind (excluding Pendlebury) not sure who else.

Think I will be more cautious in my prediction this year until I see some exposed form.

A solid way to go.
I'm keen to see us go around too before predictions.
I think our destiny up down or static will depend on the levels of play from
Grundy, De Goey, Treloar, Maynard and Moore besides the regulars.

Grundy and Moore are our two most important players I'd suggest (besides the obvious in Pendlebury).

Cautious optimism is the best I can venture looking forward

I was thinking top 2 but.....

I'd like a top 8 obviously.
Just waiting, with some hope, caution, trepidation that it all clicks and the group starts playing consistently well.

Also really pleased with McLarty, in the future he might be ideal for us.
That and he comes across so well, looks like a leadership type.
Maybe Moore, Treloar, Adams, McLarty, Maynard et al will in time be outstanding for us....

Good reminder.
Yes, if Elliot and Fasolo can terrorise backmen and with WHE all coupled by Mayne pressure
Maybe just maybe we will be formidable.

Fingers, toes all crossed

l have said we will make the eight, so going to stick with that.
but for us do so, leadership and improvement has to come from the development of the younger players stepping
up and taking ownership of the team. it cannot be all dun by the senior group alone

Yup can see young Moore and Grundy stepping up

Not really sure what my expectations are to be honest. Of course, I'd love to see us progress and halt the regression. A lot will depend on a couple things imo: 1) A bit better luck with injuries, and 2) Our defensive structure. It really needs to get sorted out quickly. Last year a lot of guys looked genuinely clueless about what they should be doing and which blade of grass they should be defending. I was heartbreaking watching guys trail their opponent by 20m back into defense and get scored against so easily in pretty embarrassing fashion. I think its a method thing rather than a talent thing so hopefully things click there.

For all our woes last year we beat some pretty good sides and came close against a few others. Our best footy is pretty good and I'd just love to see us put 22 games of it together. If we do that, I'll be happy.

I am excited by our list, as I was last season too. But some of the performances this year just really had me feeling the game plan wasn't working or the group couldn't get a grip on it. Injuries didn't help but yeah. Will be interesting. The talent is there... having Reid on the field all season is important. Fingers crossed.

I think a fair bit of back line issue was because forward line was really bad no pressure coming out at all and shitty kicks coming in to forwards doesnt help either so with better transition to our forwards should see a major improvement.also our best forwards were either injured ,coming off injuries most of the year.

That's true. Continuity in the back 6 would be great next season too.

oh and fyi love the name and avatar absolute champion saintly
Thanks.
He was something else.
VIEWED ofcourse not in his league but won both big cups :)

Loved Saintly :)

I expect us to miss the finals, and Buckley to resign. He's too honourable to stay in the job when he has been a failure as a coach.

Much as I want him to prove me wrong I doubt we will improve, Bucks has taken us backwards every year he has been senior coach and the trajectory is consistent over 5 seasons. Despite having some decent runs of wins there's no sense of a resilient side, just a group of talented players that can click from time to time.

2015 was a disgusting year, I have never seen a more gutless and unfocussed Collingwood team: I've been watching them since the mid 70's and seriously attending since 1988. There are many fine individuals, not running the individual courage down, but almost no team involvement: they simply do not act as a team. Go back over the season and have a look at how many quarters we won: not games, quarters. We beat Richmond on the back of a single quarter: our only four quarter win was vs Brisbane IIRC. No concentration, no focus.

The excuses have come thick and fast. First Malthouse was blamed, then we had to get rid of the dead wood and big heads, then it was injuries. These are not the causes of our decline: the cause of our decline is intolerance for anyone not fitting the coaches' imaginary perfect player (not everyone can be Sidey or Pendles), a failure to identify or develop leaders, a poor game plan and a failure to generate any enthusiasm for it in the playing group.

The useless fitness guy doesn't help either.

Heard hes been telling that line to all thatll listen lately contract at gws must be up next year time to make some irrelevant noise to try and make himself relevent again in a contract year smart man...... if he honestly thinks we didnt have similar probs in 2011 2012 (10+ players self reporting) when he was skipper hes in ruddy business man mode all the way..
Maxwells opinion is that of a outsider now a days any way has about as much currency as our comments/opinions on bigfooty ....not a hellava lot.......if it was pendles making that quote id be a bit worried a retired ex captain working for the opposition with no involvement in the club anymore not so much
Agree that there could have been problems in Maxwell's later time but strongly disagree that his opinion now has as much currency as our comments on bf. Whilst he might dislike Buckley (as per pablo disco bar ) or have a bias as he works at GWS the fact remains he knows more about AFL and Collingwood then most of us ever could. He played with 14 of the guys still on our list (Pendles, Sidey, Blair, Langdon, Elliott, Adams, Goldsack, White, Fasolo, Grundy, Broomhead, Sinclair, Reid, Ramsay + Keeffe & Thomas) plus guys like Caff, Tarrant, Johnson who have or do work at the club in recent times.

I honestly share the same view with you on this. I would've liked to get some more information as to what he meant though, but oh well. Wouldn't have even played with most of the guys on our list now.
He may have just meant we won't win a flag anytime soon as GWS will win them all (or Dogs or other team he sees as better).

Bad decisions could have been off-field - Allan, Tapping, diversification into netball, women's footy, keeping Lockyer & Rocca or he may have had a bit to drink (given it was at the races). Personally I wouldn't read too much into it as many possibilities and we can't be sure of Nick's agenda / bias. Heck even Hawks seem to have made some stupid decisions lately (Mitchell & Lewis). I'm sure Pies have made some and gotten other things right. What matters most is performance on field next year & the year after etc.

I expect us to push for a finals birth in 2017. Reality is there are only 8 of them and I think there could be 11-12 sides in genuine contention. so it wont be easy.

I'd love to see some stability in the senior team with minimal changes week to week, even a few NO CHANGE announcements, as I think that will be key to us actually making the finals.

I expect a few of our kids to have break out seasons. Think DeGoey is already entrenched in our senior side but 2017 he'll go bang. Think Aish, Wills, Maynard, Ramsay, Broomhead and Cox will all take the next step. Think WHE will start slowly but be firmly entrenched in the 22 by season's end.

Of the draftees, expect Brown, Kirby and Schade to be the most likely to crack a senior game in 2017.

Expect both Keeffe and Thomas to have reasonable return years with Keeffe eventually forcing Dunn out of the side.

Expect Sier, Phillips, Crocker, and Oxley to all be putting pressure on senior players to hold their spots with good consistent VFL footy.

Wells to play about 15 games and be cherry ripe if we make finals.

Expect Mayne to win over the vast majority of fans.

Expect the decisions to let Cloke, Frost, Williams and Brown go will seem better week by week through 2017. They may all get senior game time in 2017 but none will perform well enough (like Heater) to make us lament their departures.

Think 2017 will be a more even season than any we've ever witnessed.

2 perspectives:

Expectations in terms of where we should be by now and with a decent run at it from an injury perspective? Finals

ACTUAL expectations knowing us and our coach? Outside the 8 again. Who the hell knows where.

My expectations are based on what CFC produced in the second half of this year. If this form Is reproduced in the first half of 2017 and the club has a little luck with the injury list, then CFC is finals bound! If the form displayed in the first half of this year is reproduced at any stage in 2017, then Buckley is a 'dead man walking'.

First and foremost my expectations are to have a better year than this year, ladder position and win/loss wise.

I really think with the list we have we should be making finals. Probably a year or 2 off being able to contend but we have some talent in every area of the ground, midfield is stacked with good players. We have one of the if not the best up and coming ruck in the league.

The core we have is enough to be able to lead these new players and allow them to gel with the group. Only excuse is if we get another bad injury list. Which i hope not, we are over due for some good luck. Other than that, no excuses.
