Ten confirms F1 telecasts
February 19, 2003

CHANNEL Ten has confirmed it will show Formula One races this season and has promised Australian fans a better deal.

Ten will take over from long-time broadcaster Nine, which had come under fire for continually showing delayed telecasts.

The Malaysian race clashes with the Adelaide 500 V8 Supercar opening round on March 23 while the season-ending Japanese GP runs at the same time as the Bathurst 1000 endurance classic.

Ten is planning an unprecedented three days of coverage at next month's Australian Grand Prix.

It will show the first Formula One qualifying session and V8 Supercar race on March 7 between 1.30pm and 4pm.
:D

Ten has lined up an all-Australian commentary team for the Formula One race led by the channel's motorsport host Bill Woods and recently-retired V8 Supercar driver Neil Crompton.

They will be backed by former world 500cc motorcycle racer Daryl Beattie covering the action in the pits.

The deal for the Australian broadcast rights to the F1 World Championship expires at the end of 2005.

Ten general manager sport, David White, said today the deal to show Formula One cemented the network's position as broadcaster of every major motorsport category in the world.

"Since 1997, Network Ten has raised the profile of televised motor sport in Australia to unprecedented levels," White said.

"We have given events regular time slots and approached coverage in a novel, often groundbreaking manner to achieve consistently high - and growing - ratings.

"We'll apply the same commitment to Formula One."

Throughout the season, fans will be given improved Formula One broadcast times, with all European rounds shown immediately following the Sunday night movie and rounds in North and South America shown live. :D :D :D

Boooooo! I'd prefer Darryl Eastlake over Neil Crompton anyday!:D It could be worse - it could be Ed!

Seriously, great news.

Just thinking about it, Sunday night movies usually finish around 10:45pm-ish, so it really isn't much difference, except they will regularly start at that time, not having one start at 10:15, one at 11:15 and another at 2:45am.
