Essendon
To help settle a disagreement between myself and another poster, I thought the fairest way would be to get the BigFooty members to settle it.

Of the current team playing lists, which team possesses the greater pace, Adelaide or Essendon?

Clearly Essendon.
We recruited for pace last season, and Dangerfield, Jacky, Martin, Petrenko and Kite have plenty of it, but our first 22 is very much lacking pace. Our entrant in the grand final sprint (not that anyone takes it seriously) was Bernie Vince, and pace is the weakest part of his game!
Apart from a few youngsters, Adelaide seriously lacks quick players.

Crows have no real pace.

Some good runners, but they are endurance.

Endurance is by far the more important attribute.

There is a footy saying that goes along the lines that "ruckmen (or other tall players) don't get any shorter".

That is actually an oblique reference to the observation that the exceptionally quick players tend to tire, and hence any advantage you may get from them tends to dissipate as the game wears on.

This is not the case for a player with adequate pace and great endurance. They will maintain their adequate pace for the entire game.

A good side will have a few "quicks". The thing is ... you only need a few. Too many "quicks" is an imbalanced side, just as is having "too many talls", "lack of height", "skillfull but not strong", etc, etc.

Do Adelaide have a few quicks? Why yes, in actual fact, they do. Dangerfield, Jacky, Martin, Petrenko, McKay and Kite are all quick, and even Douglas has a decent turn of speed.

Do Adelaide have height? Strength? Endurance? Yes, all of those also.

What Adelaide lack is a decent small forward, and a natural forward with goal sense and an accurate kick who can be relied upon to take a mark.

Do Adelaide lack pace? Not enough so to worry about it. Team balance in that arena is just fine.

We have much more spead than the crows, and our endurance has improved over the last year.

Speed and endurance only good for a certain amount. If you can't use the ball then it's pointless and thats where Adelaide has it over us.

Speed alone isnt everything - hence why Adelaide finished in the 8, and Essendon didnt. ;)

essendon easy, adelaide have one of the slowest sides in the afl, along with swans, kangaroos and the pies.

Whats more likely to do a quicker lap around Bathurst.

A Volkswagen Beetle or a drag car???

Errr, this is a footy forum last time I looked. Youre analogy doesnt work in this game as you've eliminated the skill aspect, the game plan, etc etc.
