Opinion First Captain under Walsh?

Did we ever hear anything much about his recovery? Was he back fully running, jumping and kicking by the end of the season?

Also was surprised we didn't hear more from him throughout the year in the media. He speaks better than pretty much any player in the league. He would have owned those guest commentary stints compared to blokes like Montagna. Missed a chance to raise his profile (and ours).

Was he in the box on game days?

I reckon I saw him with the coaches at a couple of home games.

I believe he was at times. I think he was helping out with the SANFL team too.

Lol I know you were kidding, but I was being serious. Strewth.

Haha, it's all good. I just figure I may as well have my fun before this thread rapidly spirals out of control with the regulars.

Lose our captain, lose 6 or so games by less than 2 goals. Leadership. People bag VB on here but a captain will always be who the players say it is, never the fans.

I'm a big vB fan, and I'd love to see him have a season as skipper under this new regime.

Not sure if that will happen but...

We lost 5 games in 2013 by less than 2 goals. VB played in 4 of them.

Hardly think that leadership vacuum was a huge issue. We are simply not good enough.

VB was in the box most if not all games.

He was very quiet in the media, was great to see him speak immediately after the season ended and be pretty ruthless in his comments - ie every players knows we'll replace them with someone better if we can.

I'm keen for him to remain captain for at least 2015.

Danger, Sloane, Tex and Talia (maybe Sauce) is a great leadership group behind that.

Plus, I want to see VB in defence next year. Give us some extra voice and leadership back there, allow Smith to play full time midfield/wing.

Interesting that in Phil Walsh's interview today he said the players vote on the captain but the coach is the leader and there are two non-negotiables;
  1. The player must get the job done on game day.
  2. The player must be committed to team and put team first.
Van Berlo had a shitter year on game day in 2013 and didn't play in 2014. I've got no doubt he can fulfill the second requirement but I'm not real confident he can fulfill the first requirement.

I know his on-field performances have been a bone of contention and Phil's comments put it in the spotlight yet again. Is anyone confident Van Berlo will "get the job done on game day"? will he play a better game under Walsh?

Also how can Walsh tell if he will get the job done on game day when he hasn't played for 12 months.

I think the captain call will be interesting this year considering Walsh thought it was a bit much for Dangerfield and Sloane. I reckon Thommo would have been captain if he was coaching the last three years but Thommo is probably a bit done now, unfortunately.

Will be interesting to see, do you recon his second point rules danger out?

Left fielder - Tals as captain. I honestly think he's one of the best leaders at the club. Stands up each and every week and does his job. Is one of our most important players, the defence general, a lot like Darren Glass as captain. Not afraid to tell it how it is. Spoke very well about the club on AA night in the interview with Robbo and Whateley.

I know it won't happen, but gee I'd love to see it happen.

Walsh loves Glass. Could be a smokey.

How do we assess captaincy from 2013 if we accept that the coaching was below par?

im pretty sure phil said the players vote on the leadership group but he will pick the captain

Good point. I actually think at some times this year danger struggled BECAUSE he was trying too hard to put team first (silly turnovers and unnecessary passes). Danger plays best when he puts his body on the line and plays on instinct. His best contribution to the team is when he does everything by himself
