Opinion First Captain under Walsh?

So far we've "heard" that Sloane was pissed, Danger was pissed, vB was pissed, players were pissed that vB was demoted, the players are stoked, and that vB didn't expect to remain and is fine.

How about - we don't know.

Dangerfield and Sloane both said they wanted VB to captain at the end of last year. So that we do know. I never said that anyone was pissed or angry at the decision but it seems Walsh has gone against what the majority wanted. I agree we don't know how the players will react and whether it's a good call or not.

Yes, apparently, but no one has yet uncovered what he does.

He has this nailed, look at the precision in those cuts !!

Don't confuse public support for the incumbent with the actual feelings of the players. They are not always the same thing, did you expect either of those guys to say, "nah, VB's had his time, I've half done it this year and it's not so hard, I'll most certainly make a better captain, so it should be me."

Love it! This club is going places. New coach, new captain - can't wait to see what 2015 will bring for the club now.

Of course they said that. He was still captain!!

Great appointment didn't see that coming. I think he will lead from the front and inspire by his actions on field. I just hope he doesn't feel under pressure to become the enforcer.

His interview was a little too serious which is not how I perceive Tex at all. I think he will grow into the captaincy well and will loosen up around the media. Just no alcohol when in the crowd Tex or you'll never hear the end of it from Healey

But it was a situation where they didn't need to throw their support behind VB like they did. I'm happy with the decision and believe Walker will be an excellent captain.

Standard and predictable presser. Tex and Walsh make all the right noises. One thing Walsh said that I liked was that actions speak louder than words and that's what this footy club will be all about this year.
Hopefully Tex will improve over time as he becomes more comfortable in the media role.

I'm sure he will. Remember Paul Kelly before he won the Brownlow? 'Monosyllabic' doesn't even come close. By the end of his Brownlow year, he was as comfortable a public speaker as you could imagine. It's just practice and familiarity. Tex is already pretty comfortable in a lot of public forums - just gets a little deer-in-the-headlights at these formal pressers.

In any case, I loved the press conference. Both those guys are straight shooters and they're making very clear and definitive statements about where the club's heading. Loved Tex's 'how is it a burden?' and Phil's disparagement of sooking and spin.

That said, you don't have to read between too many lines to see that there were differences of opinion. Hopefully, those who thought another choice should have been made can take it on the chin. The decision is an excellent one IMO. I suspect he's the one guy who both Danger and Sloane wouldn't mind missing out to. Don't think VB was ever in it.

Annoyed I missed the presser. Would have liked to see his first one as captain as it happened.

I didnt realise it till about a couple of hours ago myself. It would be great if there are links to it. Please notify if there is one.

Any word on VC? If danger is p1ssed off I take that as a great sign...if he didn't want to be captain because he's leaving then why would he be peeved ? Glad that they cared enough to have some disappointment...good signs that they are hungry and focused and best to air their stuff ro eachother and move on...well played AFC and pumped re tex !!

Congratulations Taylor Walker, you are a fine choice among several fine candidates. You'll do well.

If players were upset to see VB no longer the captain, that's a good thing. Shows that we have quality leadership options.

Considering that he would have been our next captain if we continued under Sando he would naturally be a bit disappointed, but based on his own comments about Tex, he shouldn't been surprised with the decision.
