Just on Orreal, given that Jolly still has a good few years in him left, and Currie is by all reports an absolute gun that is almost certain to succeed at AFL level (no pressure if you're reading this, Ringburner!), do you think that maybe the Swans are considering "fattening him up", so to speak, as a potential trade to the GC team? Unless Currie disappoints, Orreal is unlikely to be able to break into the senior team until Jolly retires, or moves forward. If Goodes moves forward as well, which is by all reports the plan, then there may be no room for Jolly there, so he will probably play out his career in the ruck. Which means Orreal will have to wait for probably another 4-5 years before he breaks into the side on a regular basis. Given the currency young ruckmen attract, maybe giving him a few more games early in his career and trading him off for one of the GC team's first rounders would be a good option, if it doesn't look like he'll be able to break into the team ahead of Currie?

No 19-20yo ruckman is "almost certain to succeed". He looks promising but we've not seen him at AFL level.

And Orreal himself is a long way off establishing a senior career so it's a bit early to be planning him as future trading currency.

But most of all, you're ignoring the reality of injury. Any club would want three competent ruckmen on its list if it thought it was ready to be a serious challenger (and most would even if they weren't).

Sorry, I don't think I quite got my idea over properly. Clearly that's not plan A for Orreal. But if Currie and Jolly were to succeed, and remained relatively injury free for a couple of seasons, trading Orreal could certainly be a way of getting a high draft pick in what will be a series of otherwise barren drafts. That's basically what I'm saying.

My version
Delistings- Brennan, Davis
Rookie Delistings- Terlich, Beckmans
Retirements- Ben Matthews, Spida

Trade week- Shaw
Draft- Yarren, Roughead, Luke Stanton
Rookie Draft- Tom Hislop, Wayde Mills, Ryley Dunn, Jason Davenport (two of these players)
Bold=my opinion

By my reckoning, if the list stays as is, there is only room for one more regular rookie, plus two NSW priority picks.

Six regular spots + two extra this year due to rule change - 2 outside veterans = 6 in total. Four retained + Coney already signed + 1 more.

3 NSW players = Bruce + two more

If any of the scholarship players are offered a spot (I think Gordon is eligible) they count outside this list. Plus Pyke is also a "free" extra.

Does anybody have a link to the new rookie rules?

On the AFL website they still indicate that a maximum of 3 rookies can only be retained for 2 years.

At present Smith & O'Dwyer would be on our list (in 2009) for 3 years and we would retain 3 players for 2 (or more) seasons; Smith, O'Dwyer, & Orreal, (plus NSW rookie Bruce and international rookie Murphy).

Also I couldn't find any mention on the AFL site regarding the round 11 'rule'.

Who knows what the rules are at the moment. Certainly in past years you've only been able to retain 3 rookies. But if this is the final Swans lists, it implies that the two extra rookies are allowed to be retained rookies.

MOD only counts as a second year rookie, though, since he was delisted and redrafted last year.
