Prediction Fixing our forward line

Not sure the way JB goes about it translates well to a coaching role, especially with young kids.

Might do more harm than good.

How much time spent on casboult. 10 meters out from goal and only 20-30% chance of scoring a goal.
There is in fact a player called Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti. Didn't get drafted. By chance alone got an opportunity to play at Essendon. He has not looked back.
Kristian J really needs an opportunity. Bolton must surly see this.
Tom Boyd from the Bulldogs looked like a second rate player for most the year, then beverage puts him in the ruck. Grand final day was worth every cent.
It's called Real OPPORTUNITY.

Boyd has shown a LOT more than Jaksch and that's not because he has had more opportunities. Jaksch has been poor and the constant cries of 'play him in the seniors' is only because our forwards are terrible, not because he has earned the opportunity.

If I recall correctly. He punched a team mate it the face got dropped. Came back to the seniors without starring in the seconds. And still if you read what i said it all about OPPORTUNITY not Jahsch vs Tom Boyd.

It's an absolute travesty that Boyd didn't win the Norm Smith.

We haven't had a top line CHF since Sticks. Lance was ok, too small and slow, but was able to be decent/above average through his smarts.

Its been over 20 years ffs. I don't know if McKay will become a top CHF, but I can tell you Jaksch won't. Getting one of the top 2-5 CHF's in the league is the best way to fix our forward line, but they rarely get traded and mostly need to be drafted and developed. If we don't get that right, everything else needs to be almost perfect

I think Casboult, Jaksch, Jones et al. are currently doomed to fail

Fixing our forward line involves the following:
- fixing I50s (kicking to advantage to our forwards or quickly to 1 on 1s)
- having forwards with better leading patterns / blocking for each other
- it also helps if when we get it they can kick straight through the big sticks

i say we need to focus on the first step and to that end we need:
- guys with better foot skills in the team, i suspect that is why we have recruited guys like SPS & Williamson.
- guys who can create space for others like Cripps (maybe SPS & Fisher)
- guys who can break lines (Polson, SPS and Pickett?) to create space for those delivering I50
- we also need Murph and Gibbs to be on the outside put in space so they have time to lower their eyes

Don't get me wrong I love the grunt players (E Curnow, Armfield and White etc) and every team needs em but from a country hack who used to whack it on my boot whenever I got it - we need more modern day midfielders who create space, and are elite kicks or hand ballers who make the play.

Only then will the forward line be fixed!

I don't agree. Go to training and the work that is put into Casboult is phenominal. He is also a hard trainer and really puts in. I appreciate your point but in this case I simply don't think he's up to it and has gooten the most of of himself he can. There was good reasons he was picked late as a rookie

As for other players a lot really improved under Bolton. To win 7 games with that list was a very good effort IMO.
I think that two PCL's in his first couple of years at the club might have screwed up his kicking action from when he was a junior.

I would really like to see Jaksch get an extended opportunity in the seniors. He's had a couple of games down back and a couple up forward but he's never been given an extended run in the seniors to build his confidence and show what he can do in the one position.

He would be no worse than Casboult or Jones and could put on more defensive pressure when the ball hits the ground. He has all the skills to be a quality forward and all that's lacking in my opinion is confidence (and allegedly a lack of desire). Give him a decent run of games in the seniors and we may just be surprised at the player we have on our hands.

Weitering CHF, Jaksch FF leading out of the goal square. Curnow, Silvagni as third tall types. Pickett, Wright, Sumner, Palmer, Kerridge rotating through. That is a more mobile and less cumbersome forward line than with Casboult.

As we already have issues kicking goals, it makes trapping the ball in the 50 even more critical. A more mobile setup may just help us create more scoring opportunities. At the very least we won't have the opposition rebounding out so easily which drives me crazy.
Plus Jaksch can lead up to the wing and turn around and run back towards the goals a lot faster than Casboult can.

That just made me think....how the hell do you get Kerr, Jones, KJ and H-Mac into the same NB forward line for " "development"...surely someone makes way if none are playing seniors straight up??

This is exactly why we should have ended LJ contract at the end of the year.. Perhaps we play Jones back or in the dev league.

Korcheck will play 1st ruck with HMac giving him the chop out one would expect.

Would result in a forward line of KJ, Jones and Kerr with a rotating ruck and benchtime, you'd only have 3 talls in the forward line most of the time.

How is this going to help Hmac become the monster key forward the senior team desperately needs.

Reckon our forward line is coming along well. It can kick goals, it's just our midfield don't get it a lot and we have a lot of guys in the team who butcher the ball. Our older players tend to be the ones letting us down with poor disposal.

Watched Jaksch at Arden St on Sunday morning. Observations...

He's not skinny. Has he finally added a little bit of bulk? Played forward all game as third tall with Jones, Harry, Gallucci (looked sharp), Sumner (didn't look sharp), and a NB kid I don't know (#51). He directed the forward line, and happily looked like a confident senior player. I was quite encouraged to be honest. Look, there was nothing spectacular, and he missed a couple of set shots that he really should have got, but his effort was excellent, there were signs of leadership and voice, he chased, tackled, looked focused, linked up well, took (uncontested) marks, and kicked a goal or two.

If he carries his form from the practice games into the VFL proper, I can see him getting a chance in the first team again before too long. Seeing him play well it's a little mystifying why he seems to be so far outside people's thoughts. However, it was only a practice game. He seemed happy with the physical stuff, but it wasn't a very physical game and he wasn't given any special attention. Worth keeping an eye on. Really hope he can jump up a level or two this year.

I'd put it down to 2 things.

Question marks on his hunger to make it as an AFL footballer.

We've never seen him get a solid run in one position. We moved him around under Malthouse, and he was a bit of a Mr fix it in the vfl last season. This might be to get him more involved in games where we weren't getting as many inside 50s, but he seems like the type of player who needs confidence and continuity. I still have hope.

He got a lot of continuity up forward last season.

Where this likely has come from is improving his diet, improving his lifestyle and that change further fuelling his progress at training and meetings.

Then he must be a ruck rover (Barassi)

We as fans can see his build ... his glimpses of skills ... his endurance for a young fella .... could be anything ... could be another Levi ... but I doubt it. Can mark ... can kick ... can play ... he is just a little lost atm. I don't think it has anything to do with adjusting to the big time.

I think he needs to find "his spot", that will take time ... as I said I truly believe Bolts is a little stumped as to what to do with him atm.

Seen Sammy Fowler grow up through the juniors.
One tough little determined bugger. Seen him obliterate teams virtually on his own.
Reminds of Boomer. Really hope he takes his opportunity, and hope one day he makes it onto our list.

CC is a mid for me. Even a wingman

I'd love to have Weiters as our CHF

I'm confident that Marchbank and Macreadie (with Rowe filling in the gaps) can hold down the KPD roles

In 2018 i want to see McKay as a key forward/pinch hitting ruck.

KJ is still worth a shot and then throw in Jack plus a couple of smalls

I think we move past Cas an use a forward line of
Pickett McKay KJ
sosos weiters sps

McKay plays 2nd Ruck once his body is ready, in the meantime Rowe can play 2nd ruck and we can swing either KJ or Weiters down back that's the advantage of having he extra mobile tall
