foj1 2008 draft with explanantions

Great work foj1. I'm interested in the McKernan/Hurley situation. You've felt inclined to go for McKernan because of the perceived size and athleticism advantages (I'm assuming) compared to Hurley. Do you feel that EFC really would prefer an athletic type? Similarly, do you feel Carlton would not be fazed by Hurley's apparent lack of A grade athleticism? Does Carlton's recruiting team have different priorities when it comes to KPDs than Essendons? Or is the decision such that there's be no other tall with sufficient athleticism to make Carl look elsewhere?

In my opinion EFC really seems to rate the agility test, given their drafting history. I also feel Carl rates athleticism in talls, as they don't have a history of taking talls with any queries on their speed. (well excluding a couple of obvious ruck candidates!). This makes me think that if EFC think Hurley is worth overlooking due to athleticism, Carl would feel reasonably similarly. Of course I'm not sure where that leaves Hurley. I imagine there's not that many guys who can both play and have athleticism that's good enough to make you overlook Hurleys exceptional qualities?

As an Eagles fan i'm not sure about your selection of Still, a tall player (forward ?) for the Eagles. I think that I would prefer a small defender (Klemke or Pearce perhaps ?) instead. We have tall forward prospects, even if supporters of other clubs don't rate any of them !

Great work indeed,

Only thing i would note is as a WA person i doubt Pearce will fall that low, wouldn't be suprised if Freo snap him up with pick 24...

Overall a very well researched mock Foj. However I do find your selection of Luke Shuey for Melbourne quite bizarre considering we have a plethora of similar hard-at-it types running through the midfield, many of which have better footskills then Shuey. That's my only query, otherwise very very good job :thumbsu:

Luke Shuey isnt small he is 185ish midfielder/utility. You cant have too many of that type and I would argue Bruce, Green and Macdonald do not have that much time left so there is 3 of your midfield types to replace.

Cheers, love your work.

Have you any more info on Michael Still? All I have to go on is an impressive list of stats. I've never seen him play.

Michael Still is one of my draft sleepers- if I had my time over again I might place him at pick 17 for Melbourne. Had a look at screening results and he is up to 194cm. I would use Okeefe and Reiwoldt as 2 similar type players. He has good hands but what I like about him is he continues to move and is rarely stagnant. That is a good gift for a forward.

Hey foj1, what's your justification for thinking the Hawks will deviate from their needs-based drafting with pick 16? They've only ever done that once under the administration for Dew, and I don't see Robinson as being so vital to the Hawks' plans that they wouldn't go for what they most obviously need, which is a KP back.

If they do pick a back at that position, who do you think they would go for? Lisle, maybe? He almost dropped to our second pick in your draft.

One- I dont reckon Lisle is worth pick 16 pure and simple.
Secondly I think Gilham is solid and fairly young at FB and you are really looking at CHB- Thorp is still a chance there I reckon.
Thirdly- Robinson really fits into the Hawks style of play.
Hawthorn could well take Lisle with pick 16 but it would definately be needs over talent for mine- still I am a schmuck on Big Footy- Hawthorns recruiting team have built a premiership team:)

1 of the most sensible group of 1st 40 names I have seen. After 40 it's a lottery for me but I like your first 40 give or take a couple. :thumbsu:

Sezzac interested in your ommisions and additions in your top 40. I agree there are a lot of players after 40 who could be drafted or could miss out.

I respect you're coming from here but Cross isn't alone, Boyd and Cooney both win the ball in close very well and Griffen is learning. Add to that Addison, Reid and even Higgins to go into the midfield in coming years and I think we are good to go. I would expect Suban to be more of a Gilbee successor down the track rather than play in the middle.

Cant fault you here but I would say Addison has been in the system a little while and not quite there yet, Reid unproven and I am not sold on his skills, Higgins is a ripper but do you really want him battered everyweek? The in and under role is the equivalent of being a coal miner- bloody hard work.

Would be stoked to get these to the Cattery

Lewis Johnston - reckon he will be a gun
Rounds- dont know him*
Sam Wright - love watching him star material
Steve Gaertner - worth a bit of a punt. Big boy

Whats peoples thoughts on Rounds?

Rounds is very quick and has that midfielder x factor recruiters love and he is bottom aged. Liam Jones was one I considered and remember I only have picked to 70 with the amount of delistings that have been going on I think there may be 80 or so players picked up at least.

Great stuff foj1. :thumbsu:

Just out of interest's sake, who would you have taken at 73? Lions fan wants to know. :D

A few WA boys like Ballantine, Banfield and Bennell.
Jones is there abouts and is one who may rise.
Hislop and McCulloch are there abouts.
Charlie Sharples has a lot of talent as well and Tom German is one of my favourite in and under players.

I am concerned that Hurley is being compared to an iceberg. He is ok it is just Mckernan is a much more explosive athlete. I think Hurley is a wonderful footballer who will give himself every chance to succeed.

I recon mitch banner and rory slone will go higher
and pies will get sidebottom if still there
hope hamish hartlett goes to pick 11 but doubt it

Zaharakis, Banner and Sloane are all hard to categorise. I really like Sloane best of the three. Will all three get drafted?

sinepari, or anyone other knowledgeable U/18 watcher, will scully get drafted you think? Not many have him in their draft mocks, but I think hes a definite:confused::confused:

I'd say 2 definitely will, but wouldn't be surprised if 1 missed completely.
I agree and would suggest Banner could easily miss. I reckon Sloane is quite a high chance to go and I'd be shocked if Zaharakis didn't get drafted.

yer another great read.

Reckon from a Collingwood point of view that if Sidebottom was to be available at 11 we'd swoop on him. Think he need an in and under mid with decent skills more than another flashy mid.

Also, we obviously rate Dale Thomas' TAC cup GF game highly to take him at 2. Considering Sidebottom had one of the best TAC game in history, we would've stood up and noticed.

Reckon Sidebottomw ill go top 10 comfortably anyway so Blease will be the most likely selection. He does fit the mould of the player Hine likes recruiting.

Am also seeing the name Smith at pick 29 a bit too.

Sidebottom could go anywhere from 5 onwards. I am hearing quite a bit about Collingwood and Blease. Ash Smith is also a decent fit for the Pies needs.
