Religion Folau

Murdoch reporting it was $8 million. Small price to pay to be rid of the oxygen thief. Hope he has fun counting his money and giving his shit house talks to a handful of people in his dad's front room. Good riddance to the piece of shit.
And yes you have a right to an opinion, the freedom to express it, but not the right to discriminate against people in employment for their religious views

Yet religious people are free to discriminate and this government is looking to expand this right. How does that work?

Obviously nothing was "awarded", poor wording by me, as the matter was settled. I was trying to figure why the refund was only partial. What you've suggested could be correct (donations exceeded the bill). Folau walks away with an agreed severence and the donors pick up the tab for his legal costs, as is God's will.
Donors are being refunded because costs were covered by RA

This case has already set a precedent, "let's go to court because you sacked me based on your policy stating that I can't post things that are discriminatory but also states I can't be discriminated against based on my religion"

Because of that, we are now going to have "freedom of religious rights" bill to protect those who believe in religion (or would claim to) in future cases like this.

So what that means is I can claim to believe in religious texts and use it to discriminate against minority groups if I want to. The employer would then have no recourse to sack me - unless they want to go to court. Then it's up to judge and jury.

I'm not suggesting that every religious nut is going to go around posting excerpts from the bible claiming all sinners will go to hell because they'll feel there'll be no consequence to doing that.

But the avenue will be there if my understanding of the bills intention is correct.

So when an AFL player got caught posting inappropriate shit on social media, it used to be, 'someone hacked my account'. It then progressed to, 'I posted it because I have mental health issues', now it will progress again to, 'I'm religious and they're my beliefs'.

Gough that has always been the case and Gillard and happy clapper Krudd were a big part of that. I am not saying that's right but since 1776 and probably before it has always been the case. A non Muslim in a Muslim society had to pay extra tax, a Jew in Europe could only live in certain places and have certain trades, if you wanted to join the public service in Australia 50+ years ago you pretty well had to be a mason and worst of all Racist, terrorism lover Corbyn can lead a major party in the UK

Women are constantly discriminated by religion in more ways probably than probably anybody, but nothing much done about that. By all means oppose what Folau says, he is full of BS, but freedom of speech is important too.

The only thing Rugby Australia was trying to do was get out of this with as little damage to their brand as possible. They weren't running an anti-religious crusade or anything, they simply didn't want Folau's homophobia to stick to them and turn off mainstream Australia. I'm not sure why there's so much nuffy triumphalism in this thread, but I guess you take your wins wherever you think you can claim them.

That's really not an answer. Why is it that in 2020 fealty to a fairy tale gives you a right discriminate that other people don't enjoy? It seems to me that freedom of speech is applied selectively.

Rightly or Wrongly, they have made a Martyr out of Izzy, which you could argue, is what he wanted all along. I assume Folau must have had the best Lawyers money can buy, to force Rugby Australia to back down like that.

If it were that much surely RA would have taken it to court?

Some actuary on staff probably calculated the costs of sponsorship loss, negative press, etc and worked out it was cheaper to settle. There is no way RL would roll over unless the alternative was worse financially.

It's a settlement.

Enough with the melodramatics.

Say it anyway. See how freedom of speech works?
The big difference being religions are protected species when it comes to discrimination and the rest of us have to suck it up.

Do you ever attempt to analyze something beyond your initial emotional response?

FFS, homosexuals are being discriminated for entry in to fairy land.

As a fully qualified heathen, I am also denied entry. Amount of actual ****s given = ZERO.

Plenty of legal people observed at the outset that Folau had a strong case. RA just wasn't prepared to throw good money after bad.

RA were always a very strong chance to pay out, so it was a calculation of his existing contract, damages and the huge cost for both sides in the federal court.

It's not just entry to heaven, don't be ridiculous. It's employment, religious organisations can discriminate there, health care, aged care, education are also areas in which they are or will be discriminate. And they can do all this by saying I believe in god and it's definitely god here because when this government talks about religious freedom they mean good white people religions.

Damages to RA in the public sphere would have been huge, also they were always going to loose big
If they were that much of a chance to lose, Folau would definitely gone to court, there's no way he's missing out on that sort of publicity

How far do you want to go down THAT particular rabbit hole?

Would you have every decision on the planet ran past some state sanctioned review board?

Would that still eliminate prejudice, or create an even greater tyranny?

If i am not a catholic in theory I can be refused a job in Catholic education aged care etc. It's not just about about gay people.

It's a bit of a lottery if you go to court on compensation, he was never going to get 14 million, they paid plenty so he is happy.

I suspect you’re over-estimating “mainstream Australia’s” reaction to Folau’s homophobia.

The amount of people in Australia that even GAF about Rugby Union is WELL in the minority.

Without getting too far into semantics I strongly suspect most people would’ve read Folau’s initial comments, thought he was delusional and got on with their lives.

Agreed. The right to discriminate for them but not for us, a bit absurd do you not think? Particularly considering the basis for this "right".

1) Legally, this cannot happen.
2) Privately, I am sure that it does.
3) All human beings are guilty of prejudice, the most ethically pure are probably the scientists (via the application of scientific method)
