With the long weekend this weekend being the WA Foundation day holiday I was thinking it would be a good opportunity for a Western Derby. The two teams could alternate each year as to whom get's it as a home game and it could become a regular fixture.
It is a good time into the season so both teams would be up and purring, barring injuries of course. It's not as though there is any other major event on at the same time, that I know of so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
The Vic's seem to take advantage of long weekends for Monday games so why can't we have our own special, individual, unique Monday game.

It is idea's like this and reserves teams in the WAFL which make the WAFL and it's supporters actively dislike the Eagles and Dockers.

These two franchise businesses should remember where they originated from and be promoting and helping the WAFL as much as possible.

Not constantly trying to kill it.

Foundation day is the WAFL's day!!!!

The Foundation Day Derby should stay between South Fremantle & East Fremantle. It's one of the few moments the WAFL takes precedence over AFL in WA.

It's not just the Freo derby, it's also the derby between East and West Perth

The WAFC which owns the clubs and is there to provide for the WAFL and football in general can't just ignore the money that is derived from these clubs though.

It's like a shareholder pissing on the most profitable part of their business.

I agree that Foundation day shouldn't have AFL - but i disagree about the relationship between tha AFL clubs and the WAFL. It's very much a symbiotic relationship. The WAFL wouldn't survive without the AFL clubs - and the AFL clubs wouldn't have survived without the WAFL clubs.

As you said the WAFC own them so the amount is not relevant, what figure can you possibly put on the damage they have done to the WAFL??

Great clubs like East Fremantle and West Perth have been demoted to second fiddle clubs at the expense of corporate franchises. (It is so wrong to call them Clubs)

In my view that is part of their role, to hand over profits to ensure that the WAFL remains a comp with integrity and it's rich 130 year history in tact.

The two AFL teams for some reason don't seem to give a shit though which is very dissapointing.

When you associate the Foundation Day Derby which contest do you think about? Souths vs Easts is the show stopper with East Perth vs West Perth the secondary afterthought (with all due respect to Falcons and Royals supporters).

The significance is leave it as the WAFL's day.

Or perhaps without the clubs - the WAFL would be a third rate amateur comp with no money playing second fiddle to a Victorian based comp that nabs all the decent players and pays them commensurate to their abilities.

I daresay the damage done to the WAFL would be far greater without them.

I never said they should not be there, I said it should not be an issue having to pay money to the WAFL.

They should pay a hell of a lot more respect to the WAFL than they do.

They have to invest in themselves to remain relevant, profitable and successful - and they still pay a heap of money to the WAFC through rent and distributions. It's only been of late that WC haven't had a dividend payout close to 85%. That's a large number if we equate it to corporations on the ASX.

They are quite within their rights to put a proposal to the WAFL teams to get a 2nd side - i don't see this as an issue.

It's then up the 9 WAFL clubs to deem whether it is in their best interest or not. If it's not they move on or make it worth their while.

That's not disrespectful - it's just normal business.

I will continue to call it a club, I don't care what your ideological crap over it is. It is my club. Has been since I can remember (only came in when I was 5) and will always be. The fact it is 'owned' by the WAFC (note, not the WAFL - an entirely different entity) is irrelevant to whether or not it is a club IMO.

And the WAFL isn't going anywhere. No clubs are bordering on bankruptcy. I am more concerned about the ongoing competitiveness of the Eagles (assuming you are referring to the new team issue with your final comment - as this Foundation day thing has not been raised by the Eagles or Dockers to my knowledge).

Agree 100%.

That is fine mate, call them a club if you like, as you said you were only 5 when the Eagles were born so you had no WAFL club or attachment more than likely.

You did not feel the loss of your great club being demoted to a second tier league. I don't blame you for feeling that way.

I just wish some of you slightly younger people would understand that we do have an attachment and also a great deal of respect for the WAFL, its history and its heritage.

Of course anyone under 30 odd will not care about that but that does not mean it gives anyone the right to say it is not important or that the Eagles are more important.

Well being a Souths supporter I couldn't care less what the garlic munchers and the royals do, but i'm sure if you asked supporters of one of their clubs they might say something different ;)

Pretty much. But there's no way there should be an AFL game on this day, it's a WAFL day. That's how I think of it every year.

Agreed, its tradition for me and my mates to go down to the foundation day derby every year and i'd rather continue tradition then go and watch the Eagles play

"Cough" "Cough" Excuse me? Im not sure if your saying this with tongue in cheek, but what a ridiculous comment, Falcons and Royals fans would beg to differ. We dont claim our derby to be bigger or smaller, but an after thought, ok then..

Do the Falcons & Royals still play? I beg your pardon :p

The Derby will always be a sell-out, regardless of when it's held.

So it's better for WA footy for it to be on a low-key weekend, so we can keep the Foundation day derbys, which have the biggest non-final crowds in the WAFL.

Good Friday is another important occassion where WAFL footy is the centrepiece of WA Footy, and is an opportunity for them to draw in large crowds.
