Official Club Stuff From The President - Robert Priestley

Am sure we’ve all read the AFR article about presidency
Verrrry interesting bit at the bottom, thought this was just my mind pushing it, didn’t know it’s had been whispered in media land:
“Former Sydney Swans coach John Longmire is tipped to replace Carlton coach Michael Voss if things keep going badly.”

I originally posted in media thread not due to focus on presidency, I didn’t give much thought to that section. I get it even if it is a bit nitpicky

More thought it first time Longmire had been pushed in media

Heard Priestley speak at the legends function prior to the season starting & to be honest was fairly underwhelmed.

I hope behind the blank facade he has some fire & cunning.

I feel like I'd get behind any passionate board spill now.

We need to make football the focus. We need to break up the mateships around the place that keep people in positions they are failing at.

Profits are great but football is our primary function.

At least Luke Sayers would front the media, and wasn't afraid to make changes. Priestley is invisible and treats it like a corporation. He's unelected.

Some are clearly too close, and don't offer any sort of solutions, just support for more of the same.

The comfortable inner sanctum does not represent 95k fans.

Get rid of this invisible man.
I’d support a well organised, well intentioned board spill. That means no Tom Elliott, no Mathisens and no Pratts. Enough is enough with this mob.
Would Fraser Brown be interested ?

Board changes:

IN:
Michael Burn
Chris Townshend

OUT:
Tim Lincoln

Dear Bletch,

Tonight we have the perfect opportunity to get our season going against our arch enemy at a packed MCG.

The first three weeks have been frustrating for every one of us, each game we have had on our own boot but we haven’t got the job done – we all acknowledge that we need to be better than that.

This game against Collingwood cannot come quick enough. As Carlton people we all share natural-born feelings for this traditional rivalry, so what better occasion to get our season going.

While that is where our focus as a club lies right now, and rightly so, it is my responsibility as your President to keep you updated of key actions at Board level, to ensure you remain consistently informed in a timely and effective manner on such matters relating to your football club.

With that in mind, I wish to inform you that today the Board has ratified the appointments of experienced corporate finance expert Michael Burn, as well as highly regarded Victorian barrister Christopher Townshend KC to our Board of Directors.

In joining the Board of the Carlton Football Club, Michael brings with him over 30 years of experience in investment banking and corporate finance, having advised leading Australian companies across a range of sectors, including telecommunications, media, entertainment, and technology.

His previous roles, including 13 years as a Director – with over five of these as Chair – of the Victoria Racing Club (VRC), further underscores his strong governance credentials.

A Bluebagger since birth, Michael attended his first game in 1971 and has continued as a proud member of the Carlton Football Club throughout his adult life.

Chris’ involvement with the Club is more current, having served as a Director in an important phase of the IKON Park redevelopment, which cemented IKON Park as the home of Women’s football and the long-term base of the Carlton Football Club. He has since held the role as Chair of the Club’s Risk, Integrity and Compliance Committee.

With 30 years of expertise as a barrister at The Victorian Bar, Townshend specialises in Planning and Environment Law with a focus on major infrastructure and development projects. This skill set was critical in the upgrade of IKON Park match-day facilities, high-performance athlete amenities – headlined by the Club’s indoor training field – and broadcast standard lights.

His expertise extends to sports law practice, appearing for athletes participating across multiple codes, as well as sitting across AFL industry advisory groups.

Maintaining a skills-based Board was a key factor in the assessment, recommendation and endorsement of both Michael and Chris’ nominations.

With 30 years’ experience in each of their respective areas of finance, commercial, and legal acumen, we are thrilled to be able to fill these skills-based needs on our Board with such great Carlton people.

There was particular attention to filling the finance and commercial portfolio responsibilities that I previously held and was required to step away from upon appointment as President, while expert legal advisory, notably in the areas Chris has practiced, is an existing need that requires specialised expertise across our diverse Board.

We are thrilled that both Michael and Chris have agreed to join the Board and we look forward to seeing them play their part, alongside our entire Carlton community, as we strive to establish our Club as an industry leader on a stable and consistent basis.

In a further update, Tim Lincoln will be stepping away from the Board and devoting more time and attention to his other professional commitments.

It is a difficult decision for Tim, however the significant investment and responsibility in serving our members isn’t one that is taken for granted, and he wishes to provide that opportunity for another proud Carlton person to fulfill the duties to the best of their ability.

We sincerely thank Tim, who has served with great care, passion, and a love for the Navy Blue since joining the Board in 2021.

His meaningful contributions have supported our Club’s progress in recent years, and we are deeply appreciative for all his hard work and wish him well.

Tim is a great Carlton man and will continue to have a very close connection to the Club, much in the same way as he did prior to becoming a Director.

I did want to highlight the importance of the Club’s proactive succession planning efforts, that has put the Club in a responsible position to fill the casual vacancies on the Board created by Lincoln and Sayers’ respective departures.

As seen in recent years, a considered lens to succession planning for key roles is vitally important for maintaining a stable environment.

This is in line with effective and responsible governance practices and is being carried out at all levels of our club, which is no different in our approach to ensuring we have a pipeline of appropriate future Board candidates.

Such efforts have allowed us to fill these most recent casual vacancies in a manner that enables our people to be at their best and continue the Club’s forward momentum towards achieving our vision.

Rest assured, our club is committed to building a high-performance culture, dedicated to excellence and where we are relentless in looking for ways to improve, no matter how small.

Bring on the footy tonight.

Go Blues,

Nah that’s Peter O’Farrell who is also the dad of our recent draftee Harry O’Farrell
In the Appeals Board hearing, Cripps was represented by Townshend.

Between them, O'Farrell (snr) and Townshend have done an exceptional job for the club at tribunal/appeals hearings.

Oh good, an investment banker. Those guys have elite mad skillz and would you believe it, he is even a "values-based leader with a collaborative focus on building organisations with strong cultures and alignment to stakeholder interests".

Those types of leader are so important for a football club. I assume we'll win the next 10 straight premierships now we have an investment banker at the helm

Hooray! Another investment banker has joined the board, along with a lawyer.

Stop that other teams. We have a 'Skillz Based Board' (tm). Some might say we should focus on having a 'skills based midfield' but nope, we know where the important action is.

I, for one, am glad that the members no longer get to vote on these sorts of things. As our illustrious president has said (no doubt via telegraph from 1000kms away from our match day venue), 'a considered lens to succession planning for key roles is vitally important for maintaining a stable environment.'

Can't wait to see this board "continue the Club’s forward momentum towards achieving our vision". We are so close to that, right? Exactly where we want to be!

This president is a corporate moron.

1-2 paragraphs about the footy... then about 500 paragraphs about his new banker and lawyer board members...

On a night we're facing Collingwood with a horrendous start to the season. **** off mate nobody cares about that shit.

We need a president that cares about winning premierships.

No thanks.

Fancy sending this tripe out when the club is in crisis. Also I've just about had an absolute gutful of the constant emails wanting to sell me more corporate garbage and sponsor competitions so you can try and sell more of our data. Barely any info on game day and who will be appearing as a guest speaker in the Legends Lounge etc. Paying $1000 a year to barely even be communicated with let alone have a say in which clowns sit on your board. Just an afterthought. Members taken for granted which is hilarious considering where this club has been in the last 20 odd years.

Yeah it would have been fun going to your $450 a head 2 course dinner last night that went for barely 2 hours before wandering over to the G to watch us get spanked. Oh it comes with premium tickets to the game does it? I've already paid through the nose for them once why the hell would I do it again. Here's a tip Rob, stay in Sydney.

Starting to think Sayers was a bigger loss then we ever imagined.
Sayers actually got "football". He was a bit used car salesman-esque, did a few questionalble things outside of his role as president. He was Eddie McGuire like how he could relate to fans which gave some comfort. Collins, MLG, and Priestly (so far) hasn't grasped trying to be one of us and think lawyers and accountants on the board is going to set our mind at ease.
