Mark Coughlan would have to be set to win the next Richmond Brownlow medal after a brilliant display by the 21 year old last night.

Most of up would have thought that he would be the highest vote getter for the Tigers but I dont that anyone would have thought that he would manage 16 votes. It was best part of the Richmond season IMO. Its the first time in a long time that Richmond has found itself one of the best football players in the World. From a supporters point of view, Coughlans performance was outstanding seeing the Tigers only won a handfull of games in 2003.

Coughlan has now managed to break these records:

Note: The rest is from richmondfc.com.au

· It was the most Brownlow votes gathered by a Richmond player since Matthew Knights’ 18 in 1998.

· Only 11 players scored more votes on the night.

· He tallied more best-on-ground votes than co-winners Buckley (2) and Goodes (2) and as many as Ricciuto (4).

· He picked up the 3 votes in two losing Richmond games (v Essendon in Round 20 and v Hawthorn in Round 22).

· He managed 16 votes despite playing in a side that won just seven games for the season.

All-up, Cogs polled four 3 votes, one 2 vote and two 1 votes.

His first 3-vote game was against Fremantle in Round 3 when he collected stats of 22 kicks, 6 handpasses, 4 marks, a staggering 10 tackles, and 2 goals, in the Tigers’ big win in the wet at the MCG.

The following round, against St Kilda at Telstra Dome, he again was voted best afield by the umpires in a decisive Richmond win. His stats that day read: 17 kicks, 7 handpasses, 7 marks, 6 tackles and 2 goals.

Then, against Essendon in Round 20, Cogs scooped the 3 votes with a dominant display comprising 17 kicks, 17 handballs, 6 marks and 4 tackles.

To round off a fine individual season, he collected B.O.G. honors in the Round 22 clash with Hawthorn, recording 15 kicks, 12 handpasses, 3 marks and 5 tackles in the narrow Tigers’ loss.

Clearly, the men in white, yellow, red and orange have become fully aware of the bold young Tiger warrior in the No. 24 guernsey.

Last year, despite an excellent second half of the season which enabled him to finish third in Richmond’s Best and Fairest, Coughlan managed to score only three votes in the Brownlow Medal.

In 2003, however, he captured the imagination of the umpires, just as he had done with members of the Yellow and Black faith from around the midway mark of the ’02 season.

Given a continuation of his own fine form and (hopefully) a few more Richmond wins along the way, you’d have to rate Cogs a top chance to become just the fifth Tiger Brownlow Medallist, alongside Stan Judkins (1930), Bill Morris (1948), Roy Wright (1952, 1954) and Ian Stewart (1971).
