Ablett playing better now, Judd played better at start of season. If Ablett keeps it up he could be on par if not better than Judd even without an injury.

G Ablett is an awesome player but Judd is the undisputed best player in the league. G ablett is more the flavour of the month (or year) out of the elite players of the competition that everyone chooses to compare to Judd because people don't like to accept there's a clear #1. It's like how everyone was saying Jonathan Brown was potentially better, and then Daniel Kerr and a host of other players over the last couple of years as each of them struck good form.

But the reason why Judd is the subject of all these comparisons is simply because hes the best player in the comp and has been consistently since his brownlow year. For the record, G Ablett will take home the brownlow deservedly this year. This does not make him a superior player. Results over time have to count for something in this area. If however G Ablett is still blitzing the comp next year as well, with consideration to his AA form last year then the argument might have some real validity.

More like widely touted as the best player in the league by the media. Undisputed is a very poor choice of word, since clearly this poll is disputing it.

Year would be correct.

Because in a competition with roughly 1000 players the #1 tends to change from year to year. The top 5 or 10 or whatever tend to stay the same. In the late 90's, it was, in no particular order (since we all have our biases) Carey, Voss, Buckley, Hird and Harvey (I'm sure I've left someone out). Carey was generally the media consensus, but that's largely since he was playing in premierships and the others weren't + he stood out as a big forward.

It's like how everyone was saying Jonathan Brown was potentially better, and then Daniel Kerr and a host of other players over the last couple of years as each of them struck good form.

For mine, Jonathan Brown is the better player - he's just injured and suspended so often he doesn't play as often as he should. This year he's not been in great form until recently, but last year he was easily best in the competition in the games he played. Judd, though, has been the most consistent elite footballer in the last 4-5 years.

The point is that the question is badly formed - "better" can be defined in so many different ways. Ablett has without doubt had a better year. Judd has without a doubt been more valuable over the last 5 years. Now if the question was "who is better when they're playing at their best" then you would have a debate - and rightly so.

Perhaps a better way to put it - who would you rather have in your team for one game only, assuming both are fully fit?
