This is a bit odd if you ask me. One article confirms Gazza Snr is making a comeback to footy and in the other one Bunyip president Alan Wright says that he is not. Weird. Maybe they are just trying to keep the level of interest down. Thats pretty jolly hard when he was once an absolute superstar (and probably still is ;)).

No Comeback for god

http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/email/popup/0,22617,20568863-12428,00.html A FOOTBALL comeback reportedly planned by former Geelong AFL great Gary Ablett will not be happening, according to the club he has been linked to. Ablett, 45, who last played for the Cats 10 years ago, was preparing to pull on the boots for Bunyip, in Victoria's Ellinbank league, next season, the Geelong Advertiser reported today. Numerous relatives, including Ablett's brother Graham, are at the club, with his nephew Ryan an assistant coach and the club's leading goalkicker this season.
Bunyip is near Ablett's hometown of Drouin. But Bunyip president Alan Wright said today the mooted comeback would not occur. "It is all untrue, there's no truth to it at all," Wright said.
Wright said Ablett often made appearances at the club to lend support to his family members, but there had never been talk of him taking the field. Ablett, who played 248 AFL games, six with Hawthorn and 242 with Geelong, kicked 1,030 goals in his career, one of only five players in history to top the 1,000-goal mark. He was known as "God" in football circles due to his uncanny mark and goal kicking abilities. He was inducted into the AFL's Hall of Fame last year.

GARY Ablett, one of the most celebrated players in the history of Australian rules, will return to active football next season. He will join Bunyip, in Gippsland's Ellinbank league, which has six close relatives involved at the club, including a brother. Ablett's nephew, Ryan Ablett, has applied for Bunyip's senior coaching position, and was instrumental in luring the retired superstar. Ablett, although 42, would still be sensational. Plans call for Ablett to play in a forward pocket, perhaps off the bench. Ablett confirmed the plans and said he was `reasonably' fit, and looked forward to helping Bunyip. The controversial ace joked that it should be called The Ablett Football Club, given its many players bearing that name.
``I haven't played football for a while, so I will be a bit rusty,'' he said.
``However, that will change. I hope to make a contribution on and off the field.
``Bunyip is a great club. I know many of the players, and the guys running it.
``Hell, I grew up down the road (at Drouin).''
Bunyip president, Alan Wright, said the news was exciting for the club.
``I've known the Ablett family for many years ... they've made a huge difference to this club,'' he said.
``Gary will be very welcome, and we will certainly find a place for him on the team. Age won't be a factor.
``One of his brothers (Graham) played a few reserves games for us this year, even booting a couple of goals and he's 48.''
Graham's sons Alfie and Ray also play at the club.
It is believed Ablett will also help on training nights and as a mentor to younger players.
And his presence would attract more members.
``Any club would roll out the carpet for a name like Gary Ablett. There's a real buzz about the place, it's terrific news,'' Wright said.
Bunyip was runner-up to Nyora in this year's Grand Final, beaten by just 11 points. The coaching position, for which applications closed last Friday, will be announced early next month. It is believed that apart from Ryan Ablett, the incumbent Ben Proctor is also a candidate. Ryan is the elder son of Geoff Ablett, the former pacy Hawthorn and Richmond player, known as The Racehorse. Ryan's younger brother Jake joins three other Abletts in Bunyip's senior squad. That's apart from Janice, Gary's sister, who was the club's leading netball coach. Gary Ablett is recognised as one of the greatest footballers of all time.
He retired from Geelong 10 years ago, after a remarkable career in which he played 242 games and kicked 1021 goals. Gary Ablett's two sons, Gary and Nathan, continue to carve out their careers with Geelong.

I played in the west Gippy latrobe league for garfield seniors in 2004. I have come back to Ellinbank (unfortunetly) footy league to Buln Buln this season and now next season I am up against Gary Ablett Snr. What a big 3 years.
IN MY EYES....

If he was smart he wouldnt play. All the ferals (supporters) from clubs like Longworry, Nyora, KooWeeRup will give him hell from the boundary and bring up comments involving his conflicts over the past 10 years. Does he want to hear that stuff??? Do we want to hear that stuff?? We cant stop people from saying it, so all the bogan supporters will start insulting him with effensive slurs. Hmmm something tells me Gary wont be pullling on a bunyip jumper next year. Actually I should rephrase that... Something tells me Gary SHOUDLNT be pulling on a Bunyip jumper next year.

As soon as i can figure out where Bunyips home ground is :o

Bunyip is in between Garfield and Longworry, about an hour an 15 mins south east of the city. Just follow the freeway all the way to the bunyip turn off haha.

Thank you for that.

If Gazza does get on the park, looks like I'll finally have an excuse to go over to the east side of the city :D

So is he playing or not? Seems like there are conflicting reports.

It'll be interesting to see how he goes if it's true. I can see news crews and all sorts down there checking it out!

I was talking to a couple of Bunyip people last night at cricket training and it is all not true. He is very welcome though of course!
