Haven't you heard big Gil:
'The head is sacrosanct'
So 1. When a tackle slips high and hits the sacrosanct head it is a free kick, and as such Selwood receives them.

2.doesn't change the fact that if a tackle starts at the waist and then slips down and becomes a trip, a free kick should also be paid.

So again players need to learn to tackle properly.

And how many times have you seen that happen?

honestly? Have seen it happen quite often. Usually never stands the mark but gets up and runs on ahead of the play to get involved in the next contest but yes, he does get tackled often and you'd wanna hope so too given the amount of times he has the footy in hand.

And who causes such high contact?
You can't protect the head if the rules encourage creating contact between your head and an opponent.

A Selwood holding the ball happens once in a blue moon compared to the amount of high free kicks he gets.

I like Geelong and think tonight's game was fantastic. One thing though, I have honestly never seen a team ducking into tackles as much as Geelong players did tonight. If the AFL don't do something about it, the game will very quickly change for the worse. And as good he is, the person who seems to do it the most is Joel Selwood.

The player who can't stick a tackle. It's like a player who chooses to bump and injures the player he bumps. Or tackles and slings him to the ground and gives away a free.

A poor tackling technique:thumbsu:

I mean people complain about him raising his arms, what's he supposed to do... Just stand there, do nothing and get pinged for HTB??

He raises his arm to get out of the tackle, and if by doing so the tackler makes contact with the head, well to put it bluntly he needs to improve his tackling skills, as he will continue to give away free kicks

Let's just ignore the whole umpiring issue at the moment. These high free kick drawing tackles need to be eradicated for the health and safety of the players. It's not gonna be long until a duck (or the Selwood tactic) breaks someone's neck, whether it be in the u15s or the AFL. Then the AFL has a bigger issue on it's hands. Mackie got very lucky today, he could of been a victim of a monster the AFL created.

Now I know you are trolling; Fyfe (or whoever it was) was careless. It's that simple - Mackie got to the ball first.

clearly disliked. I just bumped that idiotic thread predicting our "downfall" (yet again) and it seems no one wants to eat their words :O Thread's now closed.. until the start of next season ffs.

I'm not trolling, it won't be long til some parent sues the AFL for their kid ending up in a wheelchair because they've tried to get a high free kick and have snapped their back. Mackie got to the ball first, had a chance to stand up, instead ducked looking for a free kick resulting in him getting a severe knock to the head. The only way to stop this is to stop giving players frees for it.

You can't keep the head sacrosanct if the head is being used to win free kicks.

Never seen an entire team so focused on just winning free kicks, and that includes West Coast. Bartel has become a genuine scumbag IMO. Geelong players would get the footy tonight and what would happen next? Play for the high tackle every, single, time. Disgusting. Was a a clear directive to me.

Saw Mitch Duncan said before the game that they'd have a few tricks to counter us this time, really unoriginal to be brutally honest. Playing for frees (and being rewarded) under the slightest pressure? Why the **** not, perfectly legit.

Hope Geelong actually contest us with footy next time.

Respect for a champion team all gone.

Selwood is generally running off with the ball when the free kick is called.

In contrast, for example, I saw Suban drop to get a high tackle a few times tonight. That stuff is all for the free kick because they can't do something useful after they drop.

Selwood draws the high contact as part of escaping the tackle. Easy solution would be for the umpire to not call it and let him play football.
