This has nothing to do with jealousy.

Geelong happen to have been very successful in recent years.
Geelong have also routinely been the beneficiaries of contentious umpiring decisions in the dying seconds in recent years.

I don't care if the Cat's free kick differential is in the negative, this isn't what the thread is about.
Plain and simple, when the going is tight, no team gets the rub of the green like Geelong do.
so we get the rub of the green in the dying minutes of close games but lose it during the other 98 percent of the match. I know where I would prefer to get it and it's not at the end of close games.

Have Always hated them regardless of where they have been on the ladder and my opinion isn't going to change anytime soon.

Add me to the list for Guthrie as well - right tosser. Then again that makes him a good fit for the cats

Don't think the free to Christensen was there tbh but Geelong had all the momentum at that point and quite probably would have still won anyway as Carlton were out on their feet

Still have Geelong second behind hawthorn as the team I'd like to see win it this year since my team won't

There's so much hate for Guthrie out there - I have no idea why. Funny.

Omg you think there is only one contentious decision on the night? Half the frees in any game are contentious and then there is all the frees the could of been given as well. The player had both hands (not just one) in Christensens back. There was very little force but that free would be paid 50 percent of the time and no one would talk about it if it wasn't in the last 3 mins of a close game.

No, you're completely missing the point. If the one free kick decides the game and it's not there it obviously renders the count irrelevant regardless of how lopsided it may be.

The free kick count is an entirely terrible way of judging umpires performance is the point I was trying to make. It lacks context.

You are kidding right? the media have been brainwashing everyone to think Hawthorn is always the best team in the comp ever since 2008.
Not this year, story has been Sydney should have won if they kicked straight, Sydney the flag favorites etc. and port/ freo earlier in year. Then specifically channel 7 Harley et al forget that they aren't playing for Geelong anymore with commentary eg minimizing cats incidents while magnifying hawthorn incidents toward MRP. Can't say I've seen us being media pet this year (closest was a Rohan connelly article that if hawks won this year it would be their best flag in club history)

People hate Geelong mostly because of Selwood, and few others (Chappy when he at GFC) dropping the knees and collecting head high frees - and because they win. I dont like the tactic either but if the umpires keep awarding free kicks they arent really incentivised to change their ways

We arent protected by the umps though, last I checked - our free count was 346 for, 339 against. Compare that to Carlton - 365 for 292 against - thats a huge discrepancy. And no doubt it due to guys like Murphy dropping the knees and generally doing exactly what Selwood does. But because they're out of finals contention, noone really cares. And yet Malthouse takes to the umpires regularly when Carlton lose despite being the recipient of the biggest FF surplus in the comp.

To summarise - yes, Selwood et al drop the knees and recieve frees that shouldnt. But 1) its the umpires job to regulate the game and 2) statistically many club recieve more favourable umpire treatment than Geelong

the cats are my 2nd team and I think they saved footy after the bore that was WC vs Swans in the mid 2000's

but their current coach is a "A" grade sook and their captain is a cheat and the whole culture of throwing yourself forward and ducking has gone right through the club

ps; the hawks for obvious reasons have the most issues with this but they should also have a quiet word to "popi" after ducking his head

I direct you to my post. Carlton statistically recieve the best rub of the green from umpires this season - and by a margin.

Marc Murphy (your captain) has recieved 54 Frees this year (Selwood has 55)

Edit: Additionally, Malthouse is the biggest 'sook' in the game and has been for a good ten years at least

They are clearly still the most loved by the umpires department....Of that there can be no doubt.....Without whom top 4, never mind top spot would be beyond them.

This competition reeks of corruption & underlying (now overt) AFL agendas to its core!
Clearly? On what measure? Frees for v against? Or the "let's hate Geelong" measure?

to counter this the blues have had the most frees against that have resulted in goals by a fair margin

that decision @ the end last night was a disgrace

Most free kicked team of any top 8 side.

Most free kicked player of the modern era - Joel Selwood.

Steve Johnson, Allen Christensen, Jimmy Bartel, Steven Motlop, Joel Selwood et al are all head duckers and divers.

Geelong are the new west coast... ducking and getting cheap frees. Losing the respect they got over the last 10 years quickly...

I actually like Geelong. Great team to watch, love the way they play on and attack through the middle. Selwood doesn't duck that much, no more than other players do. People need to stop tackling him around the shoulder. All he does is lift his arm up and the tackle slips high. Watch Murphy he ducks and dives more.
