List Mgmt. Geelong Premiership, why not? Drafting utilities, that's why.

That said, I had Houli as BOG....Martin's Norm was a travesty....but an inevitable one given he played well..
my thoughts too. Staggered he didn't win it.

I much prefer when our mids kick it, because of our small forward line it gives them the opportunity to get that chaos ball going and hit the scoreboard. With only one key forward the patient handball and set up game doesn't work, Tomahawk is playing on two men half the time, and even when he isn't his hands aren't what they were a few years ago.
I think kicking the long bomb to Tomahawk is a huge mistake, he's much better when he's running out on the lead + marks. + I reckon he has three defenders scragging him. Would love to see Buzza play more games because of his marking ability, physical in the contest + takes defenders from scragging Tomahawk. We've been very unlucky with out small forwards - all injured!

a utility has a few uses

1 - to cover injury to avoid being exploited hugely, eg injury during a game (this is extremely unlikely and not worth planning for)
2 - to cover or expose a potential weakness eg if you play an extremely small backline and a KPF is dominating you might send back this "utility" to cover and viceversa

the only ways i see that you could fill a major exploit with 1 utility player would be in the ruck, or as an extra tall defender/loose man in defence

injury to a ruck is extremely unlikely so its not really necessary to have cover, but a tall defender/forward who can potentially ruck is a bonus, not something you'd plan for specifically

a loose man in defence can be filled by 1 player, usually an experienced midfielder, dont need to recruit this

a 3rd tall defender is generally a utility who can play on a tall or smalls

to sum up, having a tall who can ruck is useful in an emergency (but unnecessary) and having someone as a 3rd tall defender(eg stewart) is generally all you need as far as utilities
I would donate a kidney to have another Max Rooke :hearts:

The only utility we've dragged that's turned out to be a genuine gun is Mackie.
No way! Max Rooke was the best Utility we've had in decades! Rooke's versatility allowed him to play as a forward, defender, + midfielder. I just don't think Mackie is in that league.

Who is going to provide you what Motlop had??

Are you going for FA??
Cockatoo (please God let his hamstring be fully healed?) Cockatoo has far more talent + skill than Motlop.

Seems to be the fall back under pressure because we lack composure to hit targets by foot whilst pressured. All it leads to is a long bomb and turnover.
No wonder we struggle to score in finals.
Also our inaccuracy in front of goals, we miss too many set shots.

Sadly didn't last long enough to have the impact Mackie has had.

True, yet for the time we did have him, Rooke made more of an impact than Mackie.

How do you define a utility though? I recall Duncan was considered a utility coming out of the draft and he's pretty darn good. You could say the same with Dangerfield who was a forward in the TAC.

I would define a utility as someone who can play anywhere on the field.

Anthony Koutoufides springs to mind and Bartel was probably our last Utility.

Jack Gunston. He's up forward, he's down back, he's on the wing.

Hird was probably a classical utility, and excellent wherever he was.
I disagree with Kitty re Max- he was a very good player when fit, but we have def had better utilities, and Mackie would have to be one of them over their careers.
Blic is a utility by default.
Bartel played in many positions.
And, yes, Danger has utility attributes.
What about James Kelly- accomplished mid, goal scorer, great as an attacking hbf- give me Pops over Max most days of the week

I recall he slowed down considerably after his German injections, aka hammy.
Lovable player and we don't win 09 without him, but he had many ordinary, passenger games as well.

Jon Ralph names his 2018 flag favourites

Jon Ralph believes Geelong’s off-season acquisitions have catapulted them into premiership favouritism for 2018.

Two-time Brownlow Medallist Gary Ablett’s return home headlined Geelong’s trade dealings last month, with the move of youngster Darcy Lang to Carlton and speedster Steven Motlop to Port Adelaide the only players to transfer in and out of the Cats during the 2017 NAB AFL Trade and Free Agency Period.

However Ralph singled out praise for Geelong’s work at the draft table as well, believing their choices in last Friday’s National Draft reinforced their push towards a flag in the near future.

“The inescapable conclusion is that Geelong should be 2018 premiership favourites,” he told SEN’s The Run Home.

“Everything that they have done has been to draft and to trade for the now. I think it’s fantastic.

“Just look at what Geelong has done… Let’s just backtrack and realise that he (Ablett) has been the best player of the game over the last 20 years, so even if he plays 15-plus games (next year), that’s a massive win.

“They brought in Darcy Fogarty, who is a tackling forward. Tim Kelly, who is a livewire WAFL player. Charlie Constable, who needs to work on his tank but again, he is ready made.
