Geelong to go undefeated for the rest of 2024??

Extremely smart man.

I believe sometimes too smart in where he can overcomplicate the game a little. Dangerfield forward in the 2019 prelim wasn’t a great move for example.

Did you ever get that vibe 2012-2021?
no, but i can entirely see where others will hold that pov and it isn't far fetched and still potentially true. just my own two cents is that he was at the time handling a list which was transitioning at the time about 11ish AA players across a tripple premiership side, which meant juggling retirements, form declines in their twilight etc etc, which left a lot of gaping holes and deficiencies in the side over especially those earlier years.

I think it meant he often had to try and paper over a lot of cracks in the side, which I can easily see as being too complicated, maybe it was??? i think its there to debate, but is going back a bit far in my memory bank.

in the years richmond belted us around, I think we had a severely weak forward line, and a slow sluggish defense as well that needed to be protected from fast slingshot style footy. We had a tendency to be opened up badly on turnovers and reverted to a more slow moving game. at least this is how I viewed it. We played within our limits.

Yeah he should have at least one.

But coach of the year generally means the team that has “most improved” from last year.

Geelong has been consistently good since Scott took over so his superb coaching abilities have been hidden a bit due to this imo.
Yeah, it's a really shit award. Clarko never got one either.

Seems to go to either the best new/first year coach, or someone like Hinkley in the past defying pre-season expectations.

It should just be the All Australian coach, which is almost always the premiership coach. We'd get it right more than we'd get it wrong that way.

Do you think he'll stay for longer than Sheedy did as coach of Essendon?
I remember when Sheedy was the most hated coach by opposition fans because of how successful Essendon were under him, right now it feels similar when it comes to us and opposition fans hating Chris Scott.

Scott is still relatively young too, so age certainly isn't going to be an issue.
i think he definitely can. It has already been what?? 13-14 years?? 75% win loss ratio, 2 flags, only twice missing finals??

what impresses me the most and gives me that optimism he still has a lot left in the tank is the fact he has coached two flags with different game plans in different decades... while being the architect for both game plans. he was able to win a flag with one game plan, implement another game plan to success without winning a flag but almost.. then implemented another game plan that yielded the second flag... That is an incredibly tough feature to achieve as a coach, and most good coaches seem to come up with an idea then once it stops working they often struggle to adapt. scotty seems incredibly adaptable with footy and the evolution of the strategic frames.

I heard brian cooke once talk about him and was praising his incredible footy intellect, saying that he sees the direction the strategies of the game are heading in and is thinking steps ahead about it all the time.

With everyone else having lost a game in 2024.. the question must be asked, can Geelong go undefeated?? I don't see why not! All the leg ups from the government and AFL have made them far too strong!!

I said it at the time and I'll say it again.. the AFL using their Gold Coast franchise to hand Geelong pick 7 after winning the flag in 2022 was an absolute disgrace! The draft is supposed to be an equalisation measure, and this goes against its purpose!!

Win percentage of 70% and Dick Reynolds is the only other coach in history who comes close to matching that.

I'll never forget the fact Chris Scott was happy to coach for free in 2020 to help the club, he genuinely loves the club and loves coaching unlike others who coach for the money first and foremost.

Opposition coaches rate him as the hardest coach to coach against and there's a reason for that, most coaches have Plan A and Plan B while Scott has several plans up his sleeve.
He'll be a 20 year coach before we know it.

Regarding Brian Cook - there's a real sliding doors moment when Cook went to Carlton and they were looking for a new coach.
Carlton are on record saying they were interested in the services of Chris Scott.

Scott has said after the 2021 finals series that he had a sit down with the players - asking them whether or not they believed he was the right man to take them forward, and is on record saying he would have walked if the players no longer believed he was the right man.
The players backed him in and the rest is history.

All true. The average footy fan will die on the hill that he is a pompous, condescending, arrogant coach because of the way he speaks in the press.

I haven't watched a Scott presser in years (they're a pointless exercise). It's fairly obvious he has been an impressive coach that players love to play for.

I like that about Chris Scott actually, he’s earned the right to be arrogant. Hardwick is the same. Makes the game interesting with these sort of characters in it.

Have a ****in’ sook about it.
Go on, you’ll feel better.

The average footy fan is usually a space cadet too, so you can understand the critiscm of Scott.

He's an intelligent guy, who uses 'big words' in his press conferences. That's enough to make people dislike him and brand him as arrogant.

It's a common dillema, particularly in a world where everyone thinks their opinion matters now that they've got a platform to speak from. Twitter & BigFooty being classic examples.

Unfortunately, "He's smarter than me and I don't like him because of it" isn't a great indicator for why he's arrogant.

It certainly can't be about him pumping up Geelong or himself, as both are a rare occurrence. It's all just miscommunication and projection for mine.

He's copped plenty of critiscm along the journey from Geelong supporters for actually downplaying the performance of the side.

Or the other pet hate, where he's speaking a lot but not actually saying anything of meaning, similar to a politician.

Fair point.

You'd think they'd chuck him one though for consistency, like they gave the third LOTR movie Best Picture to cover the entire trilogy.

That number 7 pick was the sub last week. You really think he is the difference?

TBF a lot of the derision came from his histrionics in the coaches' box back in the day. He doesn't do that any more though (on record as wanting to give it up when the AFL cracked down on dissent toward umpires)

Out of curiosity, what exactly does he say that is arrogant?? I watch all his pressers, and he is incredibly humble and respectful. These incidents of arrogance over 14 years would be very few.

Arrogance is a misplaced perception.

I think what people mean is he can, intentionally or not, appear patronising in his media appearances. Reading into that, you could interpret a level of smugness with him measuring himself as the smartest person in the room.

Your typical Aussie Rules football fan would prefer an abrasive, bogan-like bully who speaks his mind and cuts out the nonsense. In other countries/sports organisations the opposite is true. So I think it's partially a cultural thing.

Of course they will. they've had the softest fixture out of all 18 clubs. Stkilda, Adelaide, Hawthorn, Bulldogs, North and Brisbane. So 1 hard game. And that hard game was in torrential weather which is perfect for playing against Brisbane.

Their true test starts now.

GWS have played Collingwood at home (before they came good), North Melbourne, Gold Coast, West Coast, St Kilda and Carlton (with a considerable injury list).

The true test for Geelong started against Brisbane and continues for the next 5 weeks. Brisbane supporters said prior to the game that they were a good wet weather team. They were as desperate as a week before against Melbourne.

If Geelong ends the 6 week run at 3-3 it's fair to say they are middle of the pack. 4-2 or better and maybe they will challenge for top 4.

Of course, it was a ridiculous post by the OP designed to create hype that could then be cut down. Geelong supporters would've been delighted with a 4-2 start and would now probably be happy enough to be 9-3 in 6 weeks time. Anything more would be exceeding our expectations. As an eternal optimist, I think we're a chance at better than that with a good injury run. 10-2 sounds right.

Winning one of the MCG games and the three at home is my best guess.

Yawns

And then if the club does well over the next month you’ll move the goalpost and say the finals is the real test …seen it all before just can’t give any credits to the club no matter what happens

"tHEIr true TEsT STaRTs nOW" - As if we're sitting back at 6-0, waiting with bated breath to see if Danny rates us or not.

seen it all before? dude, you came 12th last year and you're talking about it like you're a top 4 team. You may be this year, we'll have to see but a soft early fixture doesn't say much other than you've beaten who was in front of you.

You've had a great start, but you've had the easiest starting fixture out of all 18 clubs. that's a fact and you shouldn't be denying it.

We won a flag two years ago …it’s not like we are cellar dwelling club that suddenly became good …that’s my point I seen posters write the club off and make every excuse under the sun as to why we are shit despite having a good run

I seen it all before haters are going to hate
