Geelong vs pies final should not be at the mcg.

Question for the Geelong fans. If Collingwood still played out of Vic Park, would the finals game at the MCG be a big deal?

Or if the game was against Dogs/North/St Kilda

Doesn't matter who we play, if the club wants the home games to be played in Geelong then why should the AFL say no, when they allow games to be played in Ballarat and Tassie?

I thought I'd get in here and post ahead of the barrage of sympathy incoming from interstate teams for Geelong having to play a final at the MCG.

FWIW this is what happens when you have a comp that allows exec bonuses to come before fixturing equality and is the swings and roundabouts for things like certain teams only playing in Geelong, Tasmania, Darwin, return blockbusters etc - the list goes on. I'd happily end all this nonsense now for a genuine rolling draw.

It will make a mockery of the competition if the clear competition leader is playing its home final in front of 75 thousand screaming pies fans at the ground the pies play 15 games at each season when the pies finished fourth.

we can not have a repeat of the ridiculous 2017 finals series.

surely the competition has moved beyond the amateurish of playing finals where crowds are highest at the expense of fairness. Other professional sports do not do this.

note the grand final is a little different because there are no home sides in a grand final and the crowds arent heavily biased to mcg tenants due to fans travelling and all the neutral fans. So please dont bring grand final arguments into this thread as its not equivalent.

play the game at either kardinia and if thats not possible (it is) then play at least docklands.

for the sake of the competition.
I've got no problem playing at Kardinia Park if we get a chance to play there at least semi-regularly in the H&A season (at least once every 2 years).

It's ok to have a home ground advantage, but unreasonable if our senior team hasn't been given an opportunity to play there since 1999. And most of our senior players have never set foor on the joint.

We're always on of the two 'big ticket' home games for the Cats that they have agreed to with the AFL to fill their coffers. It ain't our fault that this is the case! By all means push back on the AFL to get 11 home games at Kardinia and give us a look at it, but quit whinging about once finals hit until then.

Heaps of professional sports do this.

Also, Im not sure what happened in 2017, but I assume Geelong would have won the flag if not for someone else's fault.

I do remember what happened in 2013 though.
Geelong would have won the flag in 2017 if the Richmond supporters didn't barrack to loudly apparently.

Don't Collingwood refuse to go there? Really it's your own fault

If they played it this year at Kardinia Park with a capacity of ~20k. How many Collingwood fans do Geelong people think should be let in?

Its largely 50-50 in finals time... the frequently referenced Geelong v Richmond final was skewed because the Richmond supporters snapped up whatever they could get on. I was there.. neutrals were going for Richmond too for the most part.

It definitely wouldn't be 98% Geelong like they are hoping for,

Do you understand professional sports at all? there is a science behind home ground advantage.

Crowd support, umpire bias, the familiarity effect and a surge in testosterone levels all give a home team an advantage over an away team, increasing their likelihood to win.

It has been consistently found—not only in team sports, such as soccer, football and basketball, but also in individual sports, like tennis—that players win more often when playing at home. A study found that soccer demonstrated the strongest home advantage, with teams winning 67.4% of their games played at home, while the figures for basketball, tennis, hockey, football, cricket and baseball ranged from 55% to 65% (Source).

That it is Collingwood's home ground is probably the main issue, but I do think if a ground is deemed 'good enough' to play around 10 home and away games at during the season, it is good enough for finals.

edit:
... but Geelong will have to potentially beat Richmond/Melbourne/Collingwood at the MCG at some point to win the flag, so in some ways it is no big deal.. and the more games there the better.

  1. I don't care where we play, and I seriously doubt the players / coaches care either.
  2. Objectively it's a bit whack, but this is just a result of a larger issue of the league prioritising revenue over fairness (see also fixture etc.)
  3. These threads annoy me because all they do is give yet another platform to anyone who wants a whinge about our club, ground, fixture, father sons, fishing/surfing opportunities, house and land packages etc. Your whinges are so predictable and so boring.
  4. Again, I don't care where we play. It's a thrill to have another opportunity. Go Cats!
