Geez that was a costly loss

Good points. I just can't recall Scarlett picking up the best opposition forwards such as Roo, Buddy, but yes , he gets Fev and Bradshaw. Similarly, Fletcher these days doesn't get the #1 forward. Scarlett is now very injury prone, but still our most important defender. We vare usually so much better with him IN.

Fev and Bradshaw are more traditional FFs who stay close to goal. Much more suited to Scarlo. He's just not going to take the Buddy's/Riewoldts anymore who are more likely to run him out of his comfort zone. But if Taylor or Lonners was getting smashed, he's not a bad back-up!!
We are in good shape defensively this year with our best on the park.

He's pretty much never taken Riewoldt - as he's a CHB and we've got a perfect opponent now in Taylor. He has taken - and beaten - Franklin in the past. Always gets Fev, always gets Bradshaw, always gets Hall.

That Hawthorn game was an interesting case. For the first three quarters Thompson had him on Campbell Brown, who simply moved away from the play and took Scarlett out of the game. While Lonergan was minding Roughead and then Franklin. For the final quarter Scarlett was moved (correctly) onto Roughead, who was shut down as we came back and won the game.

It's great to have faith in your players, but that one nearly cost us. Unless his leg falls off, Scarlett has to take one of the key forwards. I don't know why Thompson would want to start screwing with what works perfectly, and is one of our biggest strengths.

Put it this way - St.Kilda aren't going to hide Riewoldt on a flank when he comes back and let the current two play the key forward roles are they? Of course not. That's what is occurring with Scarlett. He is that important to us.
