I think there needs to be a lot more coverage of the second tier and country footy on Fox. Even to go so far as to have a Fox Footy II. That might lift the retention rate of ex afl players and inject a bit more money. When you think about it there is plenty of content for possible programming.

Yes, I would like more coverage of state leagues and country highlight packages on Fox as well.

Not probably going to drag in more viewers to the channel and would cost a fair bot to get crews to all the games so unfortunately not going to happen. Cheaper just to have endless replays like they do currently.

I believe that each year we'll see better players with more talent will miss out as the Academies ramp up and the pool of talent is bigger. As an example, GWS is purging several who can't get games each year who are being snapped up by other clubs. Aka Carlton. We traded for Steele to get him off their hands. Freo got Cam McCarthy too.

Unfortunately none of ours did get picked up which is a bit sad but can be looked at a number of ways. Too me it says our talent level was still below the perceived value of what was on offer elsewhere at the time but improved again with who we brought in.

When we are trading players out and 1 or 2 of the players we delist get picked up we'll be at a competitive standard. We're not far off now though and imo next year will tip the scales.
Just 3 years ago imo we could have let any player in our top 15 to 22 go and I seriously doubt a single one would have gotten picked up by anyone such was the state of our list. They certainly would not have resulted in a trade pick coming back to help us replenish talent. Now this year that was the case with imo somewhere in the 25th to 35th best. A good sign we're making solid list management decisions.

Next year we'll be fielding several enquiries for players not getting a go at AFL level and player/s asking to be traded for personal opportunities. As others have already said Billy, to name only one could be traded out as surplus to us but meeting a genuine need of another club where he can get more game time. This churn is what will bring on the sustainability of our list long term. It can be used to combat the inevitable salary cap squeeze later on too.

Who wouldn't love to see us (every year) assist another desperate club like we did with the Hawks this year. Cats desperately need to trade a first rounder in. If we finish 4 to 6 we have a lowend 1st rounder in the right range for Ameet to be in play and graciously field their request for assistance given a big win for us obviously. Billy plus a 1st for a jet mid for instance and we still have two 1st rounders in play. We have options to bring in 2 jets or just the one big fish in 2017 an take the other 1st round pick to the draft and spread the age group to protect the future state of our list.

Exciting times!
Look out, the Saints are coming through!

You're spot in about the cats. Their past 18 months has seriously compromised their future as far as I'm concerned.

Now they're in a spot where they HAVE to do something drastic to get a 1st rounder in. The problem they have is though, that other than their top 3 or 4 marquee payers who are simply untradeable, their list lacks depth and there isn't anyone I would particularly want. Certainly not for a first anyway.

Interesting times.

Inb4 the afl let them off the hook next year....

Could it be that the Saints finally get on the positive end of a situation before the AFL change the rules?

Pretty sure there has been no talk about what the actual penalties are going to be.
Gil will probably deem an hours detention in the pub to be appropriate.

Sort of. Cats need to trade for a first rounder, but there worst case is they trade a future (2018) first for a current (2017) first and meet the requirement that way. They could do the same the next year - trade a 2019 for a 2018 pick - and voila, they have had 2 first rounders in 4 years. They will be struggling big time with no flexibility for the next 3 years however and it's the equivalent of juggling credit card payments between two cards ...

Really interested to see how the Hawks go next year, not just because we have their draft pick. There potential best 22 could be:

Stratton Frawley Duryea
Gibson Brand Burchall
Smith Mitchell Hartung
Bruest Gunston Rioli
Sciliy Vickery Puopolo
McEvoy Shiels Hodge

Burton JOM Burgoyne Howe

It looks okay on paper and they have an amazing coach but if a few of the older players falter and JOM takes some time to get going, we could be a chance round 4!

They need 2 picks over 4 years right? Technically they just need to take 2 first rounders in 2018. (0 in 15, 16, 17 and 2 in '18 does the trick)

So they have even one more year to find that first round pick if I've worked that out correctly.

Edit: As in they'd need to find a second first round pick by the end of the 2018 trade period. That's really extending the rules IMO but seems the AFL ok'ed it.

True. But I think my scenario is more likely. They'd likely get a reasonable trade next year for a future first. But if it gets to 2018 and they simply MUST get another first rounder no matter what, then we'll see a trade that makes what we did to a desperate Hawks pale in comparison!

Gazza has that look on his face.

That look of "I just don't want to be here anymore".
GC should have traded him as it looks like it's going to end poorly for him and the club at this rate.

If he's going through a hard time in his personal life, I just can't see his motivation for continuing. He's won it all, most of his close mates have retired or close, he's not going to win anything else with GCS, he's just in it for the money surely.

Well maybe but I think he's quite an honorable bloke so torn between wanting to get out of there an yet not wanting to let them down given his sizeable contract.

Hawthorn wont make the 8 next year, just like we missed in 2012. The old players will start to fall apart more and more and I have serious doubts Omeara will even play 5 games for the year.

Gibson Hodge Burgoyne are really getting on. Im tipping not so much influence.
JOM and Vickery no real influence and ofcourse no Mitchell or Lewis.
Hard to see them winning too many games.

McGrath looking thrilled to be dressing up in his favourite Viking hat surrounded with a motley crew of people who look like they've been Photoshopped into the picture. I imagine theyre trying to give a "we mean business" vibe in this shot but they just look unhappy or dumb or both.
