Deledio to Geelong in 2017 seems very much like Burgoyne to Hawthorn 6 years ago.

Supposedly injury prone, older established star who needs a change of scenery and wants to join a team primed for success. I say put forward a reasonable offer and pull the trigger.

Except Burgoyne was younger and a much better player. That deal was very complicated and cost the Hawks a fair bit. But has been rewarded Deledio may only have 2-3 years left.

People miss the point. The move to bring in Deledio is to get better so we are a bigger chance of winning a flag in 2017, 2018 and 2019. You don't get better by trading Deledio for Motlop given everything. It seems to be just a sideways movement if anything. You don't take a risk like that for a sideway movement. There is no way Geelong would do this unless there is something else who can contribute immediately also incoming. It just makes no sense.

A trade for Deledio using draft picks and fringe players to move those draft picks up, however, does make sense from Geelong's perspective and it will make them better in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Its very simple.

I'm not saying it will happen, just saying it needs to make sense and Motlop for Deledio doesn't.

I think more possibly will go down with the comments about Hartlett and Horlin-Smith being chased by the GC. It needs to be complicated enough to hide what is really happening for supporters but achieve what it has to. Something like:

It's a pretty complicated deal for a fringe player. Our future 3rd is pretty close in value to a future 4th and it still leaves them with a couple of third rounders that they need to get rid of or risk not using the picks ( they have more then enough points as it is)

On a personal preference I don't like turning 4 pieces into 2. Though it is really 3 into 1 which is even worse.

Normally i would agree re 4 into 2 etc but thos year for a variety of reasons i think we want to trade up the order for quality rather than no, and i expect us with the guys we trade out to try for pick upgrades.

Re george i dont think we will give him away cheap as we value his leadership. Murdoch and smedts and vardy (the last one we dont have a say in it the others we do) i think we might trade for lowish returns but George will only go if we get a good offer.

Reality is it gives Port some scope to trade up or bank a couple of earlier picks to building with going forward. We are talking 21 and possibly say 25 not 43, 44, 45, 46 and 47 combining.

Port's salary cap is totally stuffed. They signed Ryder with the $500k cap banking rules and now their salary cap is over. They need to drop salary, they don't have a choice. They are trading a player who isn't playing well and are desperate to do so.

For those two reasons, I don't think Port laugh.

And therein lies the problem. Personally I wouldn't want to give up anymore than a 2nd rounder plus a player like Kersten or Horlin-Smith for Deledio but it seems exceptionally unlikely that an offer such as that would be remotely considered. Unless Wells is prepared to value him quite differently to me and most others on this forum, I just can't see how a trade will take place. I know for one I'll be pretty pissed if the compensation for Motlop (if he goes) is directly used to pick him up.

See I don't agree that they aren't additive. They are but it comes down to preferences.

There is obviously issues with adding lots of rubbish picks together and saying it is now valuable. However, these aren't lots of rubbish picks. They are two reasonable selections.

Obviously some clubs would prefer a single higher pick but others would prefer two later picks. It depends on their sitiation. In reality at 21 and 25 you can often find a couple guys who are top 15 guys. Some clubs would prefer it the other way.

The exchange rate the AFL used is very similar to draft pick exchanges that have occurred in the past so I think it is of relevance to clubs in general especially being based on data.

I think the whole laugh at the Duncan or Motlop scenario would be about prefercences and who is about in the draft and list spots. I think the response would likely be we want a single pick, go find it club as there isn't necessarily a buyer. The club would be far more smarter about this than the average fan and their views. The average fan would have a war over picks 18 and 19 because one isn't a first rounder.

Harlett, however, is overrated and is going cheap. There cap is stuffed. They need to reduce salary massively. The length of a contract etc doesn't stop their cap being stuffed and who else can they move on who would be tasty to other clubs?

Deledio for Kersten and upgraded 3rd rounder we get for GHS to GC, so mid 20's.

I actually think he could fit in alright alongside Jack. Has the potential, is just very much a confidence player and not sure the role he's been getting suits him. That said, he needs to will himself into games more...

Realistically somewhere 30-50. Think 40 is around the mark unless you're Collingwood. Collingwood it's a top 20.

We got pick 38 for josh walker last year and kersten is a better player IMO so i would want a 25-35 pick. But as he is OOC i would take 35-40.

As mentioned kersten and a 2nd rounder (whatever we end up with after trades) is fair for deledio not that i expect richmond would do the deal but they should.
