So we got closer to beating Richmond than pretty much anyone when it counted. We're obviously not that far away so which type of player or players do we need to be looking to add to progress a couple of steps further.

That's the question that this thread should be hinging on... not who we need but what we need.

I reckon we need toughness, skill by foot and speed. We also need a first class ruck.
A fit Cockatoo, would be a great starting point.
Laird would bring foot skills
A fit Steven some grunt

Fitness for the finals would be a higher priority than the players imo

regarding the players Laird would allow a mobile backline , Jenkins could allow a more mobile Hawkins in the forward line ....if the club doesn’t think Kruger will be able to play much senior games in the next year or so.

Jenkins, Hawk, Rohan, Sav, Dahl, Cocky

with Miers , Ablett and Danger taking stints would be a nightmare forwardline for the comp if it works out well.

Not saying he has changed but he is mighty tempting with these new rules. Unlimited access to the new doctor that saved his legs supposedly. Like Lana says we can just cut him before the draft next yr off the rookie list if it doesn’t work out.

You could say the ruck but there’s challenges filling that hole. Firstly, there are only a handful of gun ruckmen going round at any time and none of them are attainable. Secondly, if you can’t get a gun then is a B-grader really much of an upgrade on what we have already? Marginally. Drafting one has a high bust rate and takes years to beat fruit anyway.

I’d say when we have fallen down in finals recently we have struggled to score. We have lacked potency. I’d be focusing on bringing in players who hit the scoreboard, be they forwards or mids.

You could argue that changes in the coaching could make a world of difference, my changes would be focussed on a full time Ruck coach and a new midfield coach.

Re Bennell, he knows he only has one more shot. He now has a family, Lyon backed his case for being picked up. We are a club that gives him that opportunity. If all works we automatically have kelly's loss covered.
I pushed for a Pickett pick up at mid year draft.
Bennell has a similar flavour.
Rather us than Richmond be successful with Pickett, Stack and Bennell
Id love him on our list if his calves are right now.
He wants a crack after all he's been through. Resilience is just what we need

Big gamble but in the same sense not. Given his age he probably needs to be at a contending team with experienced players that want to win now. Also off Broadway which Geel is in a sense.

Perhaps I've missed something here but I assume you are banking on adding at least 1 additional 1st rounder in both 2019 & 2020 (possibly for Kelly) because we can't trade out our 1st rounder this year or next without trading additional ones in.
