Its an assessment based on the youth they know we have.. and the questionable quality of those they don't know.

We will struggle to have a pick that can add too much this year , let see how many spots we have to fill at the draft. A ruck in the draft would be a clever way to use a late pick.
Could be some delisted or state league players floating around as well. Obviously the vfl etc haven’t played this year. But could take a risk on someone Wells has been looking at. With such late picks do we look to add depth to some potential gaps? Ruck or key back. Most other spots are well covered.

I think we would consider a mature ruck but only if he projects as better than Fort and key defender depth is an issue for sure.

So we have 43 players on the list with Jezza, Smith, Higgins joining after all the trades/delistings.

According to AFL, it is supposed to be 38 on the main list, and up to 6 on rookie list for 2021.

So this is our Rookie List so far:
  • Atkins
  • Brownless
  • Henderson
  • Close
  • Okunbor - Cat B

Which means we currently have 38 on the main list with the current trades/delistings.

Though I think we need to upgrade Atkins this year if we keep him? Which means at least 1 more delisting on the main list if we want to upgrade Atkins?

If we have one pick you'd surely go for a KPD from one of the state leagues? 🤔 Hopefully we're not aiming for a shootout every game which we could possibly blow teams off the park

Nah it's less than 43, so it shouldn't be a problem.

46 before trade/FA period/delistings

OUT: Ablett, Taylor, Cocky, Fogarty, Parsons, Schlensog, Kennerley, Steven (likely)

IN: Cameron, Higgins, Smith

41-42 after trade/FA period/delistings

Main:

Stanley
Tuohy
Parf
Cameron
Clark
Kolo
Steven (possible pay out)
Jarvis
Stephens
Sel
Kreuger
SDK
Rata
Constable
Narkle (possible re-rookie listing)
Dunc
Rohan
Bews
Hawk
Menegola
Fort (possible re-rookie listing)
Guth
Atkins (rookie upgrade)
Evans
Miers
Tarca
Danger
Simpson
Henry
Zuthrie (possible re-rookie listing)
Dahl
Taheny
O'Connor
Stewart
Blics

Total Main List before trade/fa - 36 players

Total Main List after trade/fa - 39 players

Steven out bring that down to the magic number of 38. Chance that a couple of players like Narks, Fort and Zuthrie end up on the rookie list, bringing it down further if we want to take a couple of players at the later end of the draft.

Rookie/Cat B list

Close
Hendo
Brownless (most likely delist but could retain given club really appreciated what he did re-rookieing himself last year)
Okunbor
Tsapatolis (possible)

Rookie list Total: 5

Overall Total: 43-44 (pending likely Steven retirement)

A final thought before I log off for the night:

The sum total of our net trade acquisition should also factor in the result of losing NOT ONE possible Best 22 player, to get 3 of them in.

On top of that, consider that we had Picks 13, 15, 20 and 38 - 4 picks. As a result of only having two picks available, it means we are able to retain two of our own players. The key one that I would have been happy to sacrifice Pick 38 for - is Narkle. Has a ton of upside, and reckon he stays now that we have the list spots. The other one is Constable, who looked one of the likely sacrifices, who will also remain given he's in contract.

There's also the fact that all of Rata, Parf, Simpson and Clark turned down offers to play elsewhere, and both Rata and Clark stated they want to 'force their way into the team next year.'

So the net result is, we end up getting stronger, while losing no-one of value, keeping two depth players who would probably be better than the Pick 38 kid we would've drafted, and going into 2021 with Cameron, Higgins and Smith.

When you consider the sum of all the parts, it really is a fantastic result.

(Basic outline):

OUT: 13, 15, 20, Future 4th (Pick 70ish), Fogarty, Cockatoo

IN: Cameron, Higgins, Smith, Pick 51, Future 2nd Essendon (Pick 24ish), Future 2nd GWS (Pick 27ish), Future 3rd Melbourne (Pick 43ish)

Retain:

Clark, Rata, Narkle, Constable, Parf and Simpson

2021 Draft Hand:

1st Rounder (Geelong)
2nd Rounder (Essendon)
2nd Rounder (GWS)
2nd Rounder (Geelong)
3rd Rounder (Melbourne)
3rd Rounder (Geelong)

Oh and to cap it all off, I went through the academy kids and the likely picks that will be eaten up by them/won't be used by clubs, and there will only be around 45 kids drafted. Meaning, there's a very strong chance that Pick 51 and 96 are actually picks in the late 30's/mid 40's, and that there'll be some very good kids available even in the rookie draft. Not to mention the kids who do miss out, will get another year of exposed form and could be available at any of our 2021 picks.

I know there's plenty of naysayers, but we've come out of this trade period squeaky clean (media narrative wise), have gotten everyone we wanted, kept everyone we wanted, made ourselves stronger in 2020 and then our draft hand stronger in 2021, and all whilst maintaining our status as an absolute destination club who just gets things done and looks after their players.

I go to bed a very happy (and slightly tipsy) Cats fan, and I can without a doubt say that I am so f*cking glad trade period is now over

Peace ya'll! Bring on 2021 already!! :)

Add in Stephens, DeKoning, Close, Kreuger. Then we have many good picks in a strong draft next year.

I don't think the cliff is as big as some opposition fans hope.

Glass half full argument for you I get it. I honestly don't have an opinion on what happens in 2021 or after that down the road.

But everybody knows it's on ! Spent 3 first rounders for a gun forward and brought in two 31 plus year olds to play! Likely 14 players over 28 in the best 22 at any given time. If they bring it home the cup most likely going to make some history in the age column.

I mean trying to predict where the end is for guys in the 30-35 age bracket with 100-200-300 games under the belt is near impossible. Hendo, 2e, Sel, Danger, Hawk, Smith, Higgins etc how long is a peice of string and when do they lose that 10% of atheltism or speed that changes them from above average to average. Or when do the miles on legs catchup the little injuries. Or do they hold form for another season or two.

Some can be Brent harvey and just play on I mean Jimmy bartel had footy left and I reckon he was asked to finish up around the same time Higgins got a fresh two year deal at the cattery.

I mean the draft picks next year which don't project to be very high unless Geelong goes poorly this season. Or players untested at AFL level and with Cameron, Higgins, Smith coming in I don't see a whole lot of spots up for grabs so we might only see Miers, M.O.C, Henry, Parfitt and a touch of Simpson and Clark and a handful of games for the Constable, Sav types.

Your just going deep into the unknown after 2021 and this is the good old fashioned top up for a tilt at a flag NOW!

I mean perhaps our kids are good and we have a superstar who explodes or we draft one that is good. Jeremy Cameron takes over as the next superstar and we build again. But that won't make danger, Sel, Hawk and co any younger and history is made to be broken though so we shall see. I'm ready for it

If we are think that then I think we wait for mid season drafts, apparently there are three of them next year. I hope we just put one on our list for the long game. Fort is probably as good as any VFL mature option.. so lets look at a kid we can add.Its a convenient time with sucha poor draft hand now ..normall y we would be too distracted with players that are more obvious R1, R2 talent.

If we have one pick Id hope we look at a ruck, we have Sdek and Krueger both could play some time as KPP next year

Sorry i don't agree i think it's a 50/50 chance of getting something good as you don't know how much they have improved and grown

The first part of my post is a reference to how media etc see us.

The second is simply a reference to I feel our side is loaded ..and we have several players on the edge that will be pressing strongly. My thoughts are that unless we drafted an outstanding kid , any drafted players would play mostly VFL in 2021

Fort is 28 and Stanley is 30. Even if Sav can be turned into a ruck we still need a 2nd young ruck.
Surely you joke PO. Now is the absolute perfect time to draft an 18 year old with pick 51. It’s not an early pick so wasting it isn’t an issue. Fort and Stanley have the next two years covered. Esava is also there with Blitz to do the hybrid role for a couple of years. We have 2 years of clean air to grow our own right now!

It should be absolutely our 1st priority this draft. A no brainer. When you look at the list and what’s coming through it’s a ruckman, a second key back and potentially an extra HBF we need. We certainly don’t need more mids or HHF at the minute.

Walsh, Heath and Neale are all predicted to go btw 30-50 in the draft.

100%..
It seems ideal time to add one and just put him in an expect zero for a couple of years. With that in mind Walsh would seem ideal if he is there.
It doesn't mean we cant look at in system rucks down the track , it just gives us option when Stanley is done.

Got to love Fox. Gave the Giants a better rating that us for the trade period

Lost Hately for Nothing. Lost Caldwell for scraps. Lost Langdon for nothing. Paid massive overs for Pruess. Wiped out their Corr compo. And they effectively got 16 & 19 for Cameron and a F2nd to us.

They got obliterated.
