Risky but if he is over his head issues... should we at least consider him. Cost would be zero so risk would be low to at least dip our toe?

I think it depends what the afl does with list sizes on a 30/35 list you can't risk a guy with his injury record but as a rookie he'd be worth a go.

I heard Pickeing talking about players taking 10% of their current contracts this morning...but I have to wonder if you are OOC... just what sort of contract your would be offered.

What would Hawkins be worth to sign ?

I think either they've got to reduce list sizes (with the club's having a waiver system to sign state league players at any time as injury replacements) or the top end have to take wage cuts. you can't have the club's and afl taking financial pain and the players not sharing it so the wage bill has to come down imo.

If there's a crunch on lists then strong no

If not then a moderate no based on not wanting to be responsible for his impending brain injuries.

Cost needs to be zero indeed. Hard part if the list numbers get cut to take the risk of a oft injured player when list spots potentially become oeven more of a premium

I thought the same thing. Provided the investment is minimal. There is no doubt the kid has talent. He is a Geelong boy and we need to maintain the St Joey's quota. Jenkins won't be around forever. Esava will eventually replace Tomahawk

Hawkins is fortunate as he derives income from his farm. I reckon he'll cop it on the chin

I think there will always be risk no matter what. I agree that lower list sizes mean each spot is worth more but I suspect it will balance out somehow or the afl will loose Irish players, NGA players international players, lower level players and in mccartins situation risky history player.

If we assume the worst and the say 30 there will have to be some mechanism... as clubs have had 20 plus injuries on lists before. Rookies etc..is all just another way to have players on a list and handle cost.

To me , and I'm only going on this report that he is over his issues( that need a solid confirmation) then dues to his underlying ability and role and our needs.. I could see him being worth the risk , more than someone is a HBF type for eg.

There will be some sort of crunch... its all about cost list sizes, Scapulas what ever. Clubs would love a group of 50 odd if its cost them only half of what it does now. When it pans out ..clubs will still have needs short and long term. I suspect the afl will instantly reduce cap but 5 to 10%... what happens after that may depend on profit margins

Delisted player as I see it ..so he would be a FA? After that the cost would be as per any player I guess.. which is probably never going to be as low as we would like to think. ...

Sure does make all these thing very uncertain.

He was a #1 pick, so obviously some talent there. Does he still have it? If so he could be worth consideration. Haw have just taken a risk with Patton for the same reason more upside than down.

Id say he is more a chance of playing for Geelong than Cameron.

St Kilda already agreed to resign him if he got over his issues. He’s not going anywhere else i wouldn’t have thought.

Strong no anyway. One more head knock and he’s probably brain damaged for life, if he isn’t already.

I'm pretty sure because st Kilda delisted him he would qualify as a DFA or SSP signing so shouldn't cost anything beyond a list spot. be a hard risk to take with reduced lists though I agree. as the 44th player on the list I'd do it though.

As it is we really don't know how many players will be accessible for games. Do we open up access to VFL players more ? Temp contracts etc. It was not long ago that I was thinking Ried might be worth a look on our VFL list and I see the at Miles was signed to play for us.

Listen to Swells today on SEN they were talking about draft age... and at one stage he gave the impression that the level down (VFL or what ever it is) will be even more important with lower list numbers.

So my point is ...this type of discussion will not be the last we have ... To me I struggle to see how you can go strongly at the draft if we reduce playing numbers too much... whether they are on a"list" or accessible some other way... if we make it so that a club can only have 35 names to play .. then it will be almost impossible to have many development players. Take our draft last year. Go thru it who would be taken and who would not be if they all have to be ready to play in Y1.

So I suspect reducing coach number , SCap by 10-20% , Im not sure the actual numbers that can play will drop of too much. How many do we have atm 46? Down to 35 is a lot.

I'm thinking the season might not go ahead this year... well not unless its worth starting it in potentially July or August. Think we will get a second wave of Covid-19 if it mutates, which is probable. Govts might crap their pants, and continue with lockdowns.

So in this scenario, and the AFL decides either a late season, or no season. What would happen to our draft picks in 2018?

I think Wellsy will be pushing for the status quo, keep draft age 18. Like most of us, we won't want to burn our early picks this year, when we are heavily stacked with early ones.

I did read that covid-19 seems to have a fairly stable genome so they're confident that any vaccine developed would work.

Degoey could be gettable.
Money talks.

Afew cashed up clubs will probably throw a carrot at him.

The new Cyril Rioli. Very overhyped. His output just doesn't justify the money we'd have to cough up to get him IMO. If he could get more of the ball and find more consistency, he could be anything. I'm think clubs like North and Saints will go hard and offer him $$$ that he doesn't deserve

For the time being , id be happy for us to fiscally responsible... Id not like us chasing any big names big dollars players till we know what the damage is

North and the saints will be lucky not to be insolvent by June

Personally , I do not want to see any of the side we have currently dissolve of disappear... The big and the small clubs all add to the diversity of the comp, I'm not convinced that we can cut and past supporters if we lose supporters. If there have been example of franchise rationalisation in Aust or the rcountries in sport that work, it would seem they are far less than sad stories of districts and communities loosing their voice. I struggle to imagine what AFL would be like for me if Geelong had gone the way of Fitzroy... would I still follow the Cambera Cat's. etc.

but .

.. no matter my ideal's... the comp has to be sustainable , and to a certain degree som clubs will have to be more sustainable than others. Gold Coast etc. will not be expected to balance the books like some more traditional clubs... so I feel one must look after our own back yard, I feel our #1 goal must be to ensure Geelong is not linked to the word you have quite rightly noted.

To me this situation is an ideal to refocus our short term targets, we need to "Get Back" ... put aside for the moment big thinking even squabbles about playing style.. and just ensure we have a frugal sustainable setup. To me that doesn't mean chasing big names.. it IS maintain our efforts on young players. , who are not the highest paid anyway.

Listening to Swells the other day was good , his support for 18 year old at draft at least in my mind showed on ongoing commitment to youth at our club. If we reduce lists I really hope its not the youngest players that pay the price. I hope they look at creative outcomes... ask question that would have seemed OOB no so long ago.. Would every player on over 200G take a substantial cut on the money above 300G. To keep playing list numbers as they are.. are they going to say law of the jungle... Im worth max money ..the other players can worry about getting what they are worth?

Interesting times aheads... and I hope that doesn't mean the loss of clubs like those ones you mention.

Regardless of whether they drop the club or not, the AFL will be bankrolling the contracts top players and they will not be overly keen on high dollar flagship player contracts being signed

G’day guys,

Came to ask if there’d be any interest in Rhys Mathieson in these here parts, and read the last two pages to get the lay of the land.

If you don’t mind a couple of neutral comments.

From what I have read (mostly Caro and Niall from The Age, and Twomey on afl.com), both the salary cap, soft cap and list sizes will be cut for season 2021.

Figures I’ve read are salary cap possibly to drop from $13 mil to $10 mil.

Soft cap for off field staff to become a hard cap around the $6 mil figure.

List size to be reduced to 40 for 2021, with a gradual decrease to 35 players by 2023.

I’m not sure what has been discussed further back.

Something else I’ve heard from a podcast, where playing lists were analysed. Across the league, on average 31 players per list, play 95% of all games. The remaining 5% of games is played by the other 13 players on the list.

Anyway, back to Rhys Mathieson, would you guys have any interest in a hometown lad?
