nothing doen this draft period to help our aging midfield which got murdered in the finals.

2022 season already done.

Pretty sure that's what the draft is for, then you add in the younger guys on the list such as the second & third year players, and that's how the team starts to refresh the midfield, along with other areas of the ground

Not really that hard to understand

Wells on SEN SA (I missed the start of the interview):
  • Re upcoming drafts with limited exposure:
    • Four picks inside 34.
    • Clear bunch of players up the top that we don't have access to, which is nothing new.
    • Confident some quality players will be available at our picks.
    • Plenty of good players in this draft, even into the rookie draft.
  • Re Oscar Brownless:
    • It's very hard to make a decision to delist a player.
    • Oscar had three years at the club, last two years covid affected.
    • Now has a shoulder injury.
    • Encouraged him to not give up on his dream to be an AFL player.

Im not fussed that he is gone, bit of a wasted opportunity but my take is it was blame to share around. The non selection thing is pretty much a myth. Plenty of players would lave to have 30 games up after 3 years, that he thinks that is not being played does make me wonder how he will take non selection at freo if it happens.

We have all had bad bosses, managers or team leaders and if his relationship with Scarlett was as toxic as stated on here then I guess it got to a point where he maybe couldn't see things changing. And being young he probably handled it wrongly as well.

I'm starting to think you're a Freo, Hawks or Richmond supporter, with ridiculous opinions like this...

Ask WC if they think we 'rolled over' in the Kelly trade? They're still bitching about it.

We just got Ceglar and half his wage paid, for what will end up being around Pick 44 once bids come in, for a Brisbane Future 3rd - which will likely be 50+.

We got Tuohy a while back for a 3 pick downgrade and Smedts, who we couldn't wait to give away.

We got 19 for Motlop, which turned into Ablett and TK for Motlop, which turned into JC, Cooper Stephens, Pick 30 and Pick 32.

We didn't get JC for free, but we still got him for 15, 18 and 25, with 30 and 32 coming back (separate deals were 15 and 18 for Cameron and 32 + 25 for Essendon Future 2nd - 30)

But yeah..sh*t we're just terrible at the trade table.

Notable Losses: Smedts, Pick 9, Pick 28, Gore, Pick 17, Pick 19, Smedts, Fogarty, Motlop, Clark

Notable Gains: Cameron, Ablett+TK, Dangerfield, Tuohy, Henderson, Higgins, Pick 16 (Stephens), Pick 22, Pick 30, Pick 32, Pick 22 - and whatever other little trades we did along the way

Oh yeah, just awful 🤪

**** me give him his soul back cause that was an evisceration and using something I was starting to think bigfooty banned in facts!

While I'm not ecstatic about getting Ceglar, it does make sense. Cheap short term backup who has shown he can compete at AFL level.

Watching the WA v SA games last weekend was kinda like the reserves but there were still players who showed a bit.

WA v SA - U19's - Adams, Becker, Cooke, Dittmar, Jones, Paton, Williams
Only saw about 25 mins of this game U17's - Delean, Hewett, Busslinger, Cockshell, Curtin, Keeler (previous game), Weckert

Now comes the exciting part of this years draft, the wheeling and dealing and acquisition of new hope.

With the picks we currently have there will be some quality for sure, I hope we manage to nab a couple of good kick/decision maker mids.

I'm not that down on him to be honest. I doubt it was all his fault but I do think that he resonates a stereotype of ultra talented sportsman who has always been able to do what he wanted..and probably did not handle blunt truths. PLyed a lot year one, injured year two ..and apparently was looking at trade then.... so. the commentary about not being played this year is not critical in my eyes. In the end.. move on. He was not our next great mid or captain or something so no great loss.

Out : a 21 year old & 22 year old
In: a 31 year old & bad boy .
I can sniff a pennant!

hahahahah your alternative captain critical? Ive never seen anyone throw more shade without ever offering the alternative. I guess that's why they call them the cheap seats!!

The main thing about the reported conversation seems to get forgotten - not that it was heated or that Clark hung up (like who cares who hangs up first in a telephone conversation anyway?). It was the fact that Clark said that he would not be coming back to Geelong if a trade couldn't be facilitated despite being contracted at the club. Clark did not deny that part of it and I don't think Wells did either. Anyway, now that the deal is done it's in nobody's interest to have it brought up. No surprise at all that Wells was not giving the media anything further to chew on.

Wells 100% categorically denied that he said he wouldnt come back. He repeatedly said he was happy to but they did the trade out of respect for Jordan

Any chance of drafting a ready made mid from state leagues to step into midfield Rd1?

Any suitors & at what pick?

Probably - it is after all something that Wells is renowned for.

It's why I don't necessarily understand the need to try to trade two picks in the 30s to get in to the 20s because Wells often doesn't pick who speculators think will go at those particular pick numbers

Really means sweet FA really… plenty of fast quick endurance athletes that don’t even play a game.
IMO those combines are poor mans copycat of a NFL combine.
I think Wells wouldn’t even waste his time watching that circus.

On this I am sorry but you are demonstrably wrong. I work with recruiters all the time and the one main thing I have taken out is this. If you are elite enough as an athlete then they will be happy to try and teach you how to play. Obviously you have to have some football talent but being able to compete athletically at the elite level is a non negotiable. Where as being a great old school footy player isnt a non negotiable if you are athletically gifted enough. ON the other side as you see with CC if you aren't athletically gifted enough it just doesn't matter how good a player you are you just can't make it.

SO to the point if you are elite at 2k and 20m recruiters will watch you for a long time before they determine you aren't good enough because you already tick off the most important box (not only that you are elite). Obviously if you fumble too much or don't kick it well that can still cancel you out but they will give you so many more chances to prove them wrong if you are a seriously elite runner/athlete. Henry Blitz great examples

2022 season already done.

The Demons also murdered the Bulldogs in the midfield and ruck, and they didn’t add to that part of the ground, should they give up too?

I generally agree that we face huge problems, but writing off the entire season is going too far.

You can’t escape facts and some of that is true but it’s not that black and white.

Dangerfield is still wearing a claw to fix a broken thumb and reattach tendons which he played the whole finals series with.
Parfitt didn’t play.
Duncan missed basically the whole year and was under done massively.

We aren’t the Melbourne midfield but we were on our knees. Richmond were in the 8 this year until Dusty got hurt and Prestia bowed out. It can happen to any team. Again I’m not saying “hey a bit of luck and we are premiers” but you definitely won’t win with bad luck.

I doubt he is delisted if Freo have given him a 4 year contract. Clark does seem to be a bit of an outlier. Early pick who we want to keep goes. Good chance he plays 50 plus games for Freo which would make him an unusual ex geelong player.

I respectfully disagree. The number of games played over three years isn't the metric that matters. He played 18 of those in the first year and then was injured a bit. What matters is how the club handles the selection and as Ling said when criticising the club's handling of JC nothing crushes a kids confidence like constantly being in or out of the side and not being given proper runs or for that matter being dropped for long enough when something has to be worked on. I really recommend anyone who is interested listening to Ling talk about it on the podcast in the middle of the year. For mine the snap that Clark had against St Kilda was evidence of someone who had lost all confidence, was so unsure of himself and his natural instincts and was massively afraid to make a mistake. No one can play good footy or do anything well in life with that mindset. I think a lot of that falls on the club because that was clearly not his natural state as we saw in the first year where he was fearless doing what he loved taking the game on.

So i take it we arent looking to trade up based on those comments which is disappointing.

I think only four mature age prospects have been invited to the combine (Noah Pegoraro, Charlie Dean, Ronald Fejo Jnr, Leek Alleer). So if we do take one it will likely be in the rookie draft.
