Any chance of drafting a ready made mid from state leagues to step into midfield Rd1?

Any suitors & at what pick?

Greg clark (subiaco maybe) as guys like bolton and nelson are too old now. Freeman from frankston might be a rookie option but im not sure anyone will pick him up with his injury history.

So we currently have 4 spots on the senior list with Constable looking like being delisted still and clearly we want Schlensog to come back.

So probably 4 open picks at the draft and leave Close and Atkins on the rookie list. We have 5 picks inside 50. I wonder if we try and do a 2 for 1 deal to move up the draft or would prefer to trade out a pick and load up for next year considering we won't be getting a top 20 pick this year either way.

We have all had bad bosses, managers or team leaders and if his relationship with Scarlett was as toxic as stated on here then I guess it got to a point where he maybe couldn't see things changing. And being young he probably handled it wrongly as well.
Hell, some of us are bad bosses. :D

We do. Doesnt help us in the short term though while danger and selwood and haekins and duncan and cameron are still on the list.
Not the point. We havent fixed it so we are goneski. It may not of been possible to fix it. This doesnt change the fact it hasnt been fixed. And if it cant be fixed perhaps we should of tried to rebuild rather then tread water. Offload some of danger, cameron, duncan and guthrie.

We didnt. All we have done is push our next premiership window further into the future.
Offloading veterans who don’t want to leave for draft coin, when you have just finished top four, is a difficult thing to do. Hawthorn tried it this year and failed.

Apropos of nothing, just thinking how annoying it is that we traded 30 for Higgins last year when he was a free agent the year before. We should have been in a position to delist him now having got him for free. Instead we are stuck for another year and we burnt a useful pick.

I like the idea of getting someone like Greg Clark in, especially if we could do it via the rookie draft. I don't think it'd be an ideal use of one of our earlier picks but he fills a gap we have in our midfield age wise and could give some other players time to develop, assuming he could come in and get a game immediately.

One of the worse list management decisions we’ve made in the last 20 years.

I didn't say he was going to be a rookie. The original poster asked if we'd draft a mid, Alleer isn't a mid, and no genuine mid has been invited to the combine. So I said if we do draft a mid it will be as a rookie.

See thats what happens when you stupid like me and don't read sorry hahah

I like the picks exactly where they are. I reckon they are in our drafting sweet spot.

Me too... Wells best spot? Pretty close i reckon.
StevieJ Chappy Parfitt Lonergan Ling Prismall Motlop Duncan Bundy Vardy C.Guthrie Stewart SavRat T.Kelly to name a few...

Look at how our other early picks have gone of late.
They’ll be ok. Sam needs time as all tall skinny lads do and Holmes will be a ripper. Reckon he might be your fav player in a few years👍

Sorry doc!!!

To be fair you are completely right and I know jack shit but do work with sports psychologists a fair bit. Young players more than any others need to have a clear path to help feel in control of what they are doing. Feeling out of control with no real clear message as to how to rectify that ruins confidence in anyone let alone young athletes. More than anything else developing talent is about man management and the way they managed Clark was poor in my opinion and clearly without all the evidence.

I didn't hear that. I heard him say - after being asked about the phone call and whether Clark 'urged strongly' for the club to release him and being hung up on - that Clark definitely didn't hang up on him. He said Clark 'asked politely' whether they 'could get the deal done anyway that it.. er.. just that he wanted to go home to Fremantle'. He then said - 'he was also clear that he might be coming back to Geelong'. I took that to mean that Wells made it clear to him that he might be a required player if the right deal couldn't be struck. Anyway, we don't know and it doesn't matter now, but Wells is a class act to treat Clark respectfully in a situation where Clark certainly hasn't done the same to our club. I hope we draft someone with pick 22 that actually has some pride to pull on the hoops.

Now that's the way debates should be conducted on here. Totally agree with your attitude to us hearing it differently. Ultimately neither of us know and Wells is an amazing man. It's super funny talking to him about recruiting though. He gives so little away and always talks in generalities but you still feel like he is a legend and has helped you heaps. He also never ever ever takes notes. It's amazing cause almost everyone else does. It reminds me of two legendary commedians chatting about comedy and one of them couldn't believe the other one didn't write down his funny ideas on a note pad whenever he had them. He asked why and the guy said cause if it's funny enough I will remember it. Maybe Wells thinks that about players (and he has replay video hahaha)

While I'm not ecstatic about getting Ceglar, it does make sense. Cheap short term backup who has shown he can compete at AFL level.

Watching the WA v SA games last weekend was kinda like the reserves but there were still players who showed a bit.

WA v SA - U19's - Adams, Becker, Cooke, Dittmar, Jones, Paton, Williams
Only saw about 25 mins of this game U17's - Delean, Hewett, Busslinger, Cockshell, Curtin, Keeler (previous game), Weckert

Now comes the exciting part of this years draft, the wheeling and dealing and acquisition of new hope.

With the picks we currently have there will be some quality for sure, I hope we manage to nab a couple of good kick/decision maker mids.

yeah I thought Busslinger was arguably the most exciting talent on the ground and then he had to play deep on Delean and just got owned in a 1 on 1. Boy can that kid play. Still think Busslinger will be a star but probably just says more about JD

Any other prospects that might be kicking around the local comps that Wellsy might have an eye on? Would be nice to score another Tom Stewart.

Given Wells has said we're targeting MIDs in the draft, I really like the sound of this bloke. Can't see him in any phantoms or draft rankings, so I'm guessing he'll be available at our picks.

Player focus
Earning best on ground honours for Western Australia in their 10-point win against South Australia in this year's final clash between the two sides, Angus Sheldrick is the prospect who has scouts talking.

Over the past two months, Sheldrick has built one of the most impressive resumes, also winning the head-to-head midfield matchup against pick one favourite Jason Horne-Francis in the first Under-19 Championships clash between WA and SA.

Horne-Francis was unable to impact the game through the midfield and was relegated to playing in the front half, in what was a surprise disruption to an otherwise near-flawless close to 2021.

In the WAFL Colts Grand Final, Sheldrick battled on manfully and was the dominant force through the middle, amassing 27 touches despite copping a bad corky in the second quarter and an unsportsmanlike knee to the ribs while down on all fours in the third quarter.

Given Sheldrick's recent eye-catching performances, his best on ground display at the weekend's final Under-19 Championships clash should surprise no one; he's a competitor who shows up every week and does what is asked of him.

In each of the Championships games, WA was clearly a level above through the midfield and the contribution of Sheldrick played a large part. An impressive stoppage midfielder, the 17-year-old is a strong-bodied stoppage specialist with a height and build akin to Lachie Neale.

At 179cm and 88kg, Sheldrick is strong over the ball and routinely wins first possession, works hard around the ground to receive loose ball gets, possesses an explosive burst of speed, shrugs tackles and tackles with intent, plays a strong two-way game and hits the scoreboard.

Impressively, during the WAFL Colts finals series, Sheldrick kicked six goals from three games, while kicking another two goals in his final match against SA, including the sealer.

Where Sheldrick will need to put work into his game is his kicking and decision making. He is effective feeding outside runners by hand but at this stage lacks polish and precision by foot. Whether he is under pressure or has time with ball in hand, at times he will attempt ill-advised kicks that lack situational awareness.

Gaining fans in recent months, Sheldrick is viewed as a likely mid-draft choice and would be a strong value selection for a club looking to give their midfield an immediate boost of competitiveness
