Rumour GFC 2021 Player Trading, Drafting FA, Rumours and Wish lists

Ladhams - reasonable size, weight, age. Stats okay for a rookie off limited games over 3 years for for disposals and marks (13d and 3m) and great goal kicking accuracy (21 goals 7 behinds) but lowish for HO (8 per game) - okay if second ruck. Big questions for me -

- injury history- if any chronic leg or back, forget it. Can’t find anything.

- speed? If slow, forget it - can’t be a plodder these days. Too easy to exploit.

- okay with a move? On good, but not crazy coin and years. And crucially, okay to be a back up to Stanley for 2022. If not, skip. On other hand - really need to aim to change from Stanley as first ruck by 2023.

Not bad swap for Clark, if all above hurdles are cleared.

Bit of work but you could do a median versus finishing position variance which would factor out your clubs success and leave you with your traded to position.

By year with rank the median selection that you would have in the natural draft order for the number of picks you take versus the actual median. So the outcome was that in any given year you might have pushed yourself back half a dozen selections with a trade in or pulled in if you lost players.

Might have to account for selections being pushed out for priority picks, FS, academy etc too. A lot of work.

I can do something like that pretty easily when I’m back in front of a computer.

I must say if Scarlett actually said he’d refuse to play Clark in ‘his’ backline I think that’s extremely poor and the antithesis of how talented young players should be developed.

For me if anything Clark has come across as very petulant in this whole saga. If a third year player can't impress coaching staff on or off field, maybe just have a look at what you can do to improve rather than sulking and requesting a trade and then changing your mind when the coach leaves and things happen to not look so bad after all. I have no idea what Scarlo is like as a person, but if he's anything like what he was as a player, his judgment was pretty spot on even if his methods weren't "diplomatic".

Reading into this - If Clark stays then it will be off his own bat. Club is willing to let him go and it's just about extracting a palatable price at this point it looks like.

The Scarlett stuff probably played a part but Scott isn't a shrinking violet. If he wanted him in he would've made sure of it in my opinion

Completely disagree. Clark had the chance to go last year; he chose to stay, and knock back the offer of a place in the best 22 in an AFL team. This year, he was played out of position because a coach didn't want to play him in the back six. Understandably, that didn't work, and so he was left out of the side more often than not.

On top of that, this team has screamed for a young, fast ball carrier out of half back. No disrespect to Atkins, Kolo and Bews, but two are them are not fleet of foot and the other cannot find enough of the ball.

So, if Scarlett stayed, what were Clark's options? Stay at Geelong and play another six games across the wing and half-forward next year? Or go to Freo, play 22 games and possibly finals, all the while in his home state? I can't blame him for only considering staying when the door was opened up again to best-22 footy.

It could be anyone from the Misfits, the coaching group, Scarlo's mates, Clark's mates, etc etc.

And, to be honest, it shouldn't remain a state secret. If that is what's changed, then so be it.

Well if he's best 22 at Freo and wants to leave and Freo are prepared to offer a lengthy contract, good luck to him I say. There was a time when if a player wanted out of our club for more opportunities we just signed their papers. Shouldn't be any different today. For me it is a bit rich to blame your lack of games or performance on an assistant coach.

With COVID I’m a bit more sympathetic towards the interstate players than what I would had normally had been in the past …he hasn’t been disrespectful and being away from the family would be very hard on the kid that he might not be actually coping

It’s never a good sign if there’s a role so obviously needing filling, a player so obviously having the traits for it, yet can’t demand selection in that role. The obvious answer is he’s not good enough.

There was a time when if a player wanted out of our club for more opportunities we just signed their papers. Shouldn't be any different today. There are a couple of differences here:
- The players in question (Laidler, Kersten, Simpkin etc) weren't good enough to be best-22 at Geelong, and probably wouldn't be. Clark should have been in the best 22 all year and is, IMO, the most talented young player at the club.
- Every report and rumour at the moment seems to suggest that it was Scarlett's choice to omit Clark after a falling-out. That's damning on Scarlett, who holds the whip hand here. Not that Scott and the rest of the MC comes out with any glory either.

You would think with him gone Clarke would stay unless he's pissed off with the club in general or just wants to head home.

They weren't all plodders. Mumford was given a godfather offer from Sydney for e.g. Anyway, I guess we're just in disagreement on this one. The fact that to me seems much more obvious than any rift with a coach is the fact that he hasn't cut the grade at either AFL or vfl level this season.
