We've got picks 18 and 92 as it sits in next year's draft. Who knows who's going to retire. Getting another first round pick might be beneficial particularly if Clark is taken at 6.

This way we get Hotton (for example) this year and take two firsts next year for a couple of talls.

Wouldn’t be the worst fallback option if Clark goes earlier than 7.

Hawthorn might take Clark in the hope that he'll form a synergy with Stephens via the falcons connection.

Newcombe, Worpel, Coop and Jhye would be just repeating the same mistakes as years gone by, IMO - given they'd have a completely one dimensional midfield all over again.

Wouldn't surprise me if they did take him, but I do think it would be a mistake on their behalf if McKenzie, Tsatas, Humphrey etc. are all still there.

My crystal ball has 3 scenarios that could play out -

1. Clark is available and we just take him. Done.

2. Clark has been taken earlier and we hold the pick and take either MacKenzie or Busslinger (well, there’s 2 scenarios there if you are being pedantic..)

3. We trade down for a pick in the teens and a FF and take Hotton.

They are the likely scenarios in my head atm.

Yeah i agree those are the 3 likely options albeit with 3. Theres a few other guys in the teens id look at as well as hotton.

I still think its 95 % likely we take either clark or buss..ie we only trade back 7 on the night after hawks pick (we will have a deal ready to go) if both of them are gone (i think one will be there and we will take who is).

I'm still convinced that Hawthorn will select Clark and we'll trade down with Sydney for 14/17 and a Future pick for pick 7

Or with Melbourne for their 13.

Yeah if we do trade back (if hawks take clark though id be mad if they did after stephens) you would think
Melb 13 and Fr1 (theirs or freos)
Gws 15 and Fr1 (theirs or richmonds) or
Syd 14/17 and FR1

Would be the most likely deals so we would only go back a few spots.

We ain’t trading down from pick 7 whether Clark is there or not.

We will if the guy we want is likely to be there at 13-15 anyway as it allows us to bank currency for next year (which we need) and still get the same player this year anyway.
If the guy we want wont get to 13 (ie mackenzie to saints at 9) then we grab him rather than trade back.

Not following you?

We have an fr1 next year and then nothing til the 80s (though no doubt we will trade players for picks). So trading 7 for a teens pick this year and an fr1 would help fix our lack of 2023 picks.

They could but clark worpel newcombe stephens nash and ward is very samey player type wise. Really only mcdonald offers them any variety there.

I think we have seen some glimpses of Dekoning being able to play forward.
But he’s just so natural in defence I wouldn’t want to move him. I don’t really like switching players too much.

I thought it upset Henry’s game this year to be moved forward and back.
Not helped by the injuries he had of course, Henry had a great season the year before and should continue to develop his game as a leader down back.

Ben McKay would be a perfect target next year. He’s at a great age who would partner really well with Dekoning.

I think next season we will likely see the back 6 rotations of SDK, Bews, Kolo/Zuthrie, Henry, Stewart, Tuohy/Duncan and then against certain teams we will see our ruck drop to CHB while Blicavs runs around doing Blicavs things.

Hopefully with OHenry in, we leave JHenry in defence and let him hit another level as a defender.

Do we really need another monster KPD? DeKoning is capable of playing on the no.1 forwards and it’s rare that a team has two massive big guys in the forward 50 these days. I thought our balance in def 50 was terrific this year with Henry taking the second tall and Stewart and Z.Guthrie being the interceptors. None of these guys are 30 yet. I just can’t see the need atm.

We do need to get another young guy to develop and for depth. But I’m struggling to see, unless someone gets injured, how someone like McKay gets a game for us?

I’m thinking that with Parfit and Bruhn in maybe Clark is there, but if not we look for another mid who is different to them, then someone like Phillapou is the kind of option that would offer good inside and especially outside variety.

It’s hard to split Clark, Mackenzie and Phillipou. Likely that we’ll get a choice from 2 of them. Prefer Clark but wouldn’t be unhappy with any of them.

Bulldogs now have a very strong set of tall forwards, especially with Lobb/Naughton/Ugle-Hagan.
Blues have McKay and Curnow.
Lions now have 3 decent talls (at the Gabba) in Gunston/Hipwood/Daniher.
Pies will often run Cox/McStay/Mihocek.

And we don't have depth if SDK gets injured, or like against Port where Dixon got of the chain and we didn't have any alternatives.

Re gc and ollie hollands no specific mail seems to be in the media its more just logic as it would help them retain elijah...in hindsight they should have taken both kings in 2018 not rankine..so this time they might take the brothers.
I do agree they might look at trading next years 1st if they think it will go on an academy bid anyway.

Why do we need a lot of players next year? We have just drafted 3 AFL ready young players, plus pick 7. We have lost only Selwood from the flag team, with Holmes and Menegola missing out.

Ceglar hardly played, there are no obvious retirements (unlike Dahl and Higgins) but some will go, if Simpson is back to full fitness, he will be contending next year and beyond, Neale, Conway and Dempsey look good, and the 3 injured 2021 draftees all have potential.

We have a first rounder next year, future picks to use, free agency and trades from our bulging list.

If McKenna joins, even better.
Plus we have a sweep up pick 58 and 2/3 rookie picks this year.

I don’t see the point of trading a near certainty good player in pick 7 for a speculative later teens pick and a speculative future pick, just to get further into the 2023 draft.

What’s your thoughts on S.Neale being Hawks replacement?
No one will replace Hawk, and as we tend to do, our fwd line structure and play will change when Hawk retires. Neale is a KPF replacement by virtue of his physical attributes. Watching him this year though he plays nothing like Hawk. I generally hate comparing young players, but in this case Neale plays like Naughton from the dogs. Crashes packs, sticky hands, good shot on goal. Should be a great compliment for Jezza and O. Henry

I think we likely see 5 retirements next year. Maybe more.

2E; Rohan; Smith; Stanley; Hawkins.

I agree that the defence looked the best it had in years partly because of having a smaller more agile defensive group. But Dekoning and McKay are both young and can hold down the defensive posts without causing any issues.

I don't think there is a replacement for Hawkins, but I'm really bullish on what Neale could bring to that forwardline.
Not sure in what role specifically, normally I'd say he could be the mobile roaming CHF and Jezza plays out of the square, but Jezzas role in the latter half of the season was brilliant and gave us so many options and lots of drive that I'd be unwilling to change that.
Who knows, might even see Henry as a lead up medium key forward.

A couple of points.
Next years draft is a better pool so say 14 this year and 14 next year is arguably better than 7 this year.
On retirements id say ceglar is certain..stanley rohan smith tuohy hawkins are all reasonable chances to retire..menegola will be 31 and FA so i can see him going too.
Simpson and sav are good chances to go next year and the neale WA risk is there.
So i can see us turning over 6-8 spots easily next year-we will either be moving players to bring in picks or hitting FA hard as we wont be taking 4 players in the 5th round i dont think.
