I was at the G when Snell copped a dreadful injury. He was a good player - kicked 5 goals in the last quarter once.
I was at that game, too - against Melbourne. If I remember correctly, Jeff Farmer torched us that day. In any case, I reckon I heard the snap from where I was sitting. I knew it was a horrible injury from how long it took to get him off the ground.

Absolutely true, though it's an easy way to burn a top-10 pick.

2015 draft is a case in point. Out of the top ten, the following were at least a pass: Weitering, Mills, Oliver, Parish, Hopper, Harry McKay.

The following were the fails: Schache, Francis, Ah Chee and Weidemann.

Overall, though, I agree with you.
This is where it gets hard. Almost no hope of getting all Australian key position if not high draft pick. But likely to be 50/50 in getting it right anyway and certainly need to be patient before you know - so very high risk to use high draft pick on key position.
that old saying damned if you do damned if you don’t!

right now I think we are in a position to take a risk? Maybe? Glad not me making the decision

I think your point about SDK is well made and relevant for whoever we take as a tall. You could argue that now is the right time to take a top 10 key position as we don’t need someone with immediate impact for a few years. That does mean we sacrifice a top 10 mid (clarke) but again we don’t need that for a few years either given our depth

so either way we are just tying to get a high quality player for 2025 onward. From what I have seen you are better (if you can afford the time) to pick key position players early as a lot of late ones don’t work out. Ie, nearly every quality KPf in the league right now was a high draft pick (or father son/academy). and a lot of the KPD were as well (some picked as forwards!)

that says to me that we have a once in a decade chance to pick a high quality tall. Going against what it looks like will happen is to get another high quality mid.
As long as that tall is appropriate for the pick and not a reach. The added risk on talls is a valid reason to be a little gun shy. Still, whoever it is will kind of be a free hit

Lets find an athletic kid that kid that is as keen as mustard and just needs time. I dont mind the idea of Philips ...if he has the athletic traits to play the afl game if not pick a kid who may be a Hail Mary ..but who cares ...its P50 plus
We do pretty well with filling out the easier-to-find positions with low-value picks. I mean, every forward line member under 195 cms of that GF team (Rohan, Miers, Close, Stengle) cost us next to stuff-all.

Come to think of it, so did almost every member of the backline under 195cms, too (Henry, Bews, Zuthrie, Tuohy) with the exceptions being Kolo at p41, and Stewart at p44.

This right here is why Wells and co are so highly regarded and a huge reason as to why we stay competitive every year.

Long may it continue.

Just wanted to say that I've received all of your messages/comments/read the references to the situation etc. and it's been overwhelming the support I've received.

99% of people are gems on here, and it's unfortunate that I let the 1% get to me. I have absolutely played my part in this whole saga, as there is never just 1 side to a coin, but I think the continuation of things after I wanted it to stop is what pushed me past my limit.

I'll be responding to you all in due course, and just wanted to let you know I'm fine/give a general shout out to you all for being wonderful human beings. Will take a bit of a hiatus for a few weeks, but will talk to you all in the future.

Cheers :)

hey, welcome back dude, hope you had a nice break from BF - now get back to posting!!!

Sam Simpson signed as per email from club

Reminds me of the story from either Mooney or SJ about when we were playing at home and at the start of the 2nd 1/4 Nathan was meant to be on the ground but was nowhere to be seen... So they went into the change rooms and he was watching the game on TV eating grapes.

I could imagine him on a work site doing zilch unless prompted.

Absolutely legendary stuff lol.
Nathan "sensor light" Ablett. Only works when someone walks past.

Haha, that's not a bad one.

The kid had massive talent (obviously insane bloodlines) ... If only he had the work ethic.

Still not bad to be a premiership player for someone who apparently hardly cared/tried.
I only watched a replay of the 2007 GF a couple of weeks back on Kayo and was reminded of his prodigious talent. Sticky hands and a real sense for the goals. He could have been anything.

We obviously either really rate simpson or really dont rate the depth in this draft pool given we could have likely got him back as a rookie without anyone taking him. Given how we traded out our later picks id say its more how we dont rate the depth of the pool. Im a simpson fan though next year is make or break for him but i think he can make it.

Take care Brother miss ya input on these pages.
We have a draft to debate, so come back soon.

I have heard this multiple times.
For me. I think it's about 3-4 maybe 5 real quality players deep... with another 10. That are most likely 2nd rounders in a good drafting year.

I think we rate Simpson. And not sure a late pick would be much different to a rookie pick for us but without the 2 year contract burden.

Simpson 1 year ? It maybe a bit about him, a bit about this draft... nd a bit about next years draft. We add someone in the draft this year ..and thats a spot taken for two years...

Only issue.. we really do not have a lot of picks next year. At this stage

We shouldn't forget that Sam Simpson was good enough to be selected in a grand final, not that long ago.

We dont have much next year (only 1 pick inside 80) but no doubt we will be trading fringe players out to bring more picks in.

I think we obviously feel simpson has talent and hes had a bad injury run we want to give him a make or break 12 months. But we would have delisted and re rookied him if we rated the depth of the ND (that was more my point) so we obviously think the draft pool (beyond the top 20) isnt great.

Clark or mid p7.
P58 best kpd
Rookie A-mckenna riccardi and a project ruck
Rookie b clohesy

Would be a good haul.
Lock it in Eddie......Ah I mean Chris Scott... seems spot on to me... I wouldn't be to upset if we went a key forward rather a key defender, but key defender would be my 1st option

So with Simpson signing is there anyone left? I had heard Rohan but his contract is up end of next year?

are we done?

with 3 to draft to come and 4 rookies of which 2 are committed?

We are done
2 only (7 and 58) and in the main draft
3 cat a rookie spots to fill (one will be riccardi)
2 cat b spots (one will be clohesy)
