As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

If it's a million and we can't actually spread it then it has to be pick 8 and then some. How many clubs have 7.5% of their cap available next year?
Not saying we should di that desk but we should have cap space next year. Retirements/Trade to Tuohy, Smith, Ceglar, Menegola, Parfitt will free up a lot.

Frees up a lot but 7.5% of your cap is a huge amount.

If the AFL allow cap trading then I would be pricing 500k, where the club keeps its player, at pick 8 or 10

may have to look at parfitt season end, clearly something is not right for him this year, are we better to get some draft capital instead.
Unfortunately we can look at trading Parfitt all we want, we can't stop opposition last managers from looking at his performances in the vfl though. He can't be traded if no one wants him

If we had the cap we'd be mad not to. But those players mentioned aren't on massive money a s other clubs will have more cap and be more willing to accept less for the cap I'd guess.

Parf is his own salary dump situation.

Nobody is coughing up anything of value for a guy that is probably on solid $$$ and has gone backwards as much as he has.

Unless Parf turns it all around, I’d be happy just to give him away for nothing to get rid of his salary and open up more cap room for something positive to happen.

Lots if they spread other contracts around which you can do.

Anyone else notice that we have an elephant in the room that will be a big story towards the end of the season?
Esava Ratugolea is that elephant.
Cost pre season was about $220k per. Or a pick in the 30's-40's??.
Cost mid season is about $$350-400k per.
Cost at years end with the same trajectory will be $450-500k per.
If clubs are willing to pay TDK or HH close to a million per.
Then Esava will get $500k per without much problem if he is our CHB come finals from half a dozen clubs in the league.
24yo 6'6" blokes with speed agility and ability to lockdown a defensive post don't grow on trees.
How much are we willing to pay for this tree??
If we add another $200k to his contract. Does that put a line through a free agent or two??
Interesting times ahead.

We all speculate and have our views on if Sav is best 22 but I guess what really matters is what the club thinks.

If they truly have him in their plans as a long term key back, then I guess they will play him and offer him that increase to stay.

The elephant for me is not knowing what the club thinks... I think we will find out soon enough as he is due to come back into the side and maybe in a few weeks if he goes out or stays in all year then that would tell the story.

In my head I just think he will be better next year and into the future as a key back than this year.

I'm in total agreement with your last view.

Reports over the past couple of weeks are that Port are still seriously interested in Ratugolea - the question then becomes how much are they willing to offer him versus a potential contract from us, and then potential trade offerings

We have stacks of over 30s and thus stacks of cap space we have barely anyone signed beyond 2025.

We can pay sav bigger $ and still bring FAs in thats not the issue.
If he leaves it would be because we drop him around finals time and hes offered a guaranteed b22 spot elsewhere. It wont be about money.

The issue with port is they dont have any decent picks to trade and no realistic player trade options besides bergman (who will probably go to metro melb not geelong).

I'd see if Parfitt wants to call the season a write off, get away from it all on a holiday now and come back early for preseason next year.

He's contracted and we won't get anything of value. But if he can get back to his best he has some value to us. So unless we need to move him on for a list spot he'll be here next year.

Watching him in the VFL his confidence just looks completely shot. I wonder if he needs some time away to refresh before he gives it a big crack next year.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it come down to a 3-way trade, similar to us with Collingwood & Hawthorn with the trade for Henry, Stephens & Mitchell - just a question if it's players or picks involved coming back to us

I mean thats possible but my worry is because sav is OOC we will end up being forced to take less than that (ie some average r2/3 pick).

But how collingwood did it was good (it helped that hawks were desperate to offload players).

If say bergman goes somewhere and port could use the 3rd club thats involved to get us a player we need (like pies getting mitchell) that would be best case scenario. Id still prefer to keep sav if we can though.

Must be a reason he has gone backwards.
