As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

So how do Port think he'll walk into the gates at Alberton?
There is always a price to pay. As we all know.
Some say Pick 34... some might say Saints pick 28. Some might come up with something else.
But at the end of the day, for him to drop down to pick 16-17 for them to access his talents seems far fetched. Some might say as far fetched as my scenario.
So we'll sit back at let it all pan out.
But thinking he'll just walk out the door for a can of coke and pack of crisps (Pick 36) is crazy.

I'm always down for a bit of "hard ball negotiating" even though it never seems to eventuate.

Assuming we do want Sav and Port only offer p36... We can just say nahhh and they either up the offer or try to get him with just about the last pick in the PSD.

For once (and hopefully not) we might actually have a selection in the PSD before the team that wants the player.

Doubt it goes that way... Sav might just wanna stay anyway... But risking p36 isn't the worst play in the world.

Port would likely up the anti if they wanted him bad enough.

As we have done with players we have committed to... we get the trade done in good faith with the player.

The elephant in the room is we can’t play DK, J Henry, Ratugolea and Kolo. One of them will miss out and it ain’t the first two.

Kolo has also never been dropped as far as I can remember 👀

He really seems to have only missed senior football when injured, and when there's been a squeeze they've shifted him to the wing, but surely we now recognise that's not a realistic option

You're saying they can't all play together in the 50m defensive arc.
Yes. Agreed.
Henry and Ratugolea are the only ones that can pinch hit at CHF/FF.
With only Esava being able to pinch hit in the ruck of the two.
Also Ratugolea is strong enough to play on a BIG forward such as Dixon, Lynch, Wright, Daniher, Hipwood, Walker & McKay... Henry can't.
Like i've said previously...
SDK & Ratugolea are the pillars going forward, the others surrounding them u can please yourself.
I will add that Henry is our No.1 swing man who can play not only the back half but the forward arc depending on who where when our opponent is.
Cheers

I’ll believe it when I see it.

Very early and we do not know if we have a R1 but this kid looks very handy in the champs... Freo academy player but he will picked well before 40.

WAFL colts 2023: Mitchell Edwards building towards early AFL draft selection at Peel Thunder

Mitch Edwards is a Fremantle academy player who goes for Geelong - and could very well find his way to West Coast in this year’s AFL draft. Considered one of WA’s leading draft prospects, the Peel Thunder ruckman has done nothing but enhance his prospects in the early stages of the season.

If Kolo was in his 30's there's no way in the world I'd want to lose Sav (still don't).

Somehow Kolo is still 27 though... I had a look yesterday convinced he was older than that.

It'll certainly be interesting to see what we do with our backline this week as I assume all are now available for selection.

Maybe Cameron being hurt pushes Jack Henry forward... which is a luxury that having Sav helps with.

Ummm... Believe what exactly?? That Esava takes the BIG forward in front of Henry?? Yeah... Okayyy.
Ummmmm. Exactly what I said. All of them playing in the side. Okayyyyyy??

The positives about Sav playing back is the intercept marking. The negative is really what happens after that.

If he is on our list we try to fashion something that works..as he has influence that no many have. If we dont we move on ...as what I feel we are moving to ward is pace from the HB line with good disposal.

As with any out of contract player... the club is not totally in control of the outcome. I suspect we will offer him good money but a lot may depend on if he comes back in and stays in.

If he decided he wants to move then we just make the best of it. I doubt we weld ourselves to a position and become truculent. He is OOC. We facilitate an outcome and keep moving forward.

Same was said about O.Henry, ultimately we need a Stanley replacement and ideally one that can also play as a forward/ruckman if Conway comes good. Getting him in could lock in SDK for the rest of his career. 2 birds one stone.
Or get Sweet for a round 4 pick, which be cheaper than TDK ... we can keep SDK even if Tom doesn't come, there are heaps of brothers that don't play together..
And if.. ( which I highly doubt it) if Sam ever asked for a trade, than at least we will get get descent compensation in picks in return

We have enough leverage... as Port is 17th in the pecking order.
Not getting there through the draft.

He would get to port or another club in the draft and we get nothing. Which us why we will deal him for unders

Last year we had leverage-this year we dont..thats how the system works.

The other option is they might try and fit them all in defence and put henry forward but i dont like that option for our forward structure.

So Footy boring today…I decided to project forward 5 years (for what that is worth)…and see what gaps we might have. Not writing off the next 5 years at all but…and making some wild assumptions (in particular on young players

In that 25-27 ”peak” age bracket we will have a number of players I think could be amongst the best in the competition

SDK, Bruhn, O Henry, Holmes, Knevitt, Dempsey, Conway, Mullin and I am hopeful we can add Neale and Clark to that list. Maybe one of the others also make it too. But that is 8 to 10 potentially really good players… 1 Defender, a couple of forwards and the rest utility/mids

In the 29 to 32 bracket (can still be peaking) also have a bunch of very handy players who will be very experienced

Atkins, O’Connor, Zuth, J Henry, Stengle, Close, Miers and hopefully Sav and/or Kolo. So 7 to 8 in that bracket. 3-4 defenders, 3 forwards and 1 MF. Bowes I am hopeful and Parf I have not included. Nor Hardie as don’t know

Is it possible we still have Cameron and Stewart at 35? IF we remain in the window?

And that ignores any drafting we can pull off over next 5 years (recognising that we may not have high draft picks? And Tassie coming in is a factor).

I feel like we have 15-20 very good players in their peak. We have a “gap in between the (then) 27-29 age bracket so maybe we need another couple of the trades like we did last year but for 3rd to 4th year players?

Maybe not worth much this analysis - but did keep me excited about the future. We need to build depth and find the next “blitz”. Think Key Defender and Forwards will be the focus over next couple of years? We seem to have already invested in our future midfield (hoping it works) and we have small running forwards covered

Meh... we shall see. nothing is a given. What happens from one year to another changes... like life itself.

I know it probably won’t happen but when he’s fit, I’d be playing Esava back for the rest of the season and sending Kolo back to the vfl.
His first half last week was shocking, gave the ball away every chance he got often resulting in scoring chances for Melbourne. Yes he can hold a player but he’s such a liability when he’s near the ball and at his age he’s not improving. Would much rather get Dekoning, Esava and Henry gelling together as a younger defensive trio who can develop together.

It seems strange to try to shoehorn an extra defender in upsetting the balance like that.

Reckon Kolo is a good chance to be managed this week. Played most of the game sore against the Dees.

In reality.. if TDK wasn't Sam's Brother, we wouldn't be looking at Tom...
I don’t believe this for a second. This is the club that saw something in Rhys Stanley and TDK is as close to a clone of him you’ll find.

I see it a bit differently. I know there are exceptions but mostly one gets what one sees at another club. Could Sweet become a top liner at Geelong? Maybe but id bet more that he would be a VFL player most of the time. If you can find that player thats unloved and under appreciated...like Cameron at Syd then its a huge win.

If he is not good enough to be the ruck at the Dogs, there has to be a question if he would be good enough at geelong. Now he has English to get past..so one would need to carefully access him at the lower level and what he has done when in the dogs side. Played 11 games. He is probably a money ball type. What in particular appeals to you. I suspect he is almost a DFA. Both he and Flynn present as less than Tdek in my opinion.

On the "we only want Tom because of Sam" thing. Id say that we need to add the type of player Tom is. A ruck that is ready to go..mid 20's is ideal. If we cant get him then we move on. Id try to get Flynn as he has now been passed by Briggs. He is a FA, he is 26 next year and has played 30 idd games that you could access him on.

Recruiting in system talent its more about if the talent wants to come to your club. If Tom wants our club because of location, because of his brother, because of our culture and we need his type then we are lucky to have magnet type of player like Sam. Lets face it , its not unheard of to draft and trade in players that have relationships. Blitz might not have been a geelong player without having Guthrie.

If we could get Darcy Parish to select us as Free agent becuase were were willing to add Ry Matherson as a FA then id do it.

Then only time you have to wonder about our judgements(imo) is at draft. The player is not involved. Would we have drafted Clark if he was nit a GeelongFalcon local etc.? We would have drafted Ollie Henry.. so maybe we could say with a lot of Falcons.. we would draft them if they were not Falcons.

Last year we had leverage-this year we dont..thats how the system works.

Using leverage and being hard to deal with? We just dont work that way. I lost count how many said we would not trade our r1 for bruhn last year. We are practical especially when a player is OOC.

In truth un contracted players should all be free agents.. and clubs know it. Its rare that they do not get to where they want to go.

Even if Geelong want to play blind mans bluff... they would end up taking a Fr2. Port are close this year which means they probably are not too fussed on the draft, .. so best outcome might be ...if they get a good pick for Bergman which could wangle into that if we have something to go with Sav...just depends on how much they rate him.. and how much they offer him. They cant offer 900G and they say take P56.

Port and Geelong would be reasonable... more reasonable than passionate fans.
