As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

Let's talk numbers. Here's my predictions:

Tanner Bruhn - 21. Debuted on 21 March 2021.
Oliver Henry - 40. Little brothers want to better their older brothers by at least 2.
Phoenix Foster - 52. A reminder for the future of where he was taken in the draft.
Jhye Clark - 4. The year of his birth.
Ted Clohesy - 19. The number his "compatriot" South Africa's Lucas Radebe wore at Kaiser Chiefs.
Oscar Riccardi - 41. Has already made it his own. Cegs owes him a big apology for taking 15 a year early.
Jack Bowes - 31. To remind him of the degrees Celsius in Cairns during the depths of the Geelong winter.
Oscar Murdoch - 12. Not sure.. Trent West's biggest fan as a kid?

Will not give Murdoch 12 or Foster 52 or Clohesy 19 Rookies will get the later numbers, Foster 31

Well looks like we FINALLY have our first inclination of jumper numbers (albeit a small one) - Sel's number WON'T be used in 2023 - as many of us suggested was likely. Also...Hocking has said jumper numbers won't be revealed until the new year, for some strange reason, so at least we can stop wondering now:

"While the club is set to reveal its new numbers in the new year, Cats chief executive Steve Hocking said Selwood’s No.14 will probably be given a rest."

“It’s unlikely (it will be used),” he said

A flag in 23 would be unbelievable, but the dream come true was this year for me. I still can’t believe how good that day was, it was close to perfect for me as a supporter.
And who could have predicted at the start of the season how well our players and coaches would perform?
Off field pretty good as well.

Because there are 12 letters in Oscar’s name.

I get the chat on Stanley but FFS he’s one of only a handful of PREMIERSHIP ruckman who’ll be running around in 2023 let’s just appreciate him and all his frustratingness.

With regards to this thread particularly I’ll be basking in the glow of FIVE new additions with an average age of 21 who’ll most likely all contribute 100-250 quality games of football for us. Unheard of generally and never so following a Premiership.

Enjoy Summer y’all.

I for one am hoping for B2B - after all certain other teams I won't name managed it.

But some other teams are going to be harder to beat next season - the Dees, the Dogs, the Lions and possibly the Blues. I might have forgotten one. This means we'll need to improve 10-15% on this year. And we may well achieve that, given the new talent we have brought in to the club.

I have always liked Stanley, partly because he gets clearances himself, takes a few marks and can kick a goal. He's not a great tap ruckman, true, and has lacklustre days, but he and Blicavs in combination were clearly hard to stop this year.
I would love to see it.
We have not gone back 2 back for 70 years. (since 1951-52).

I am a broken down old hack, but this is before my time.

We are legit now the only team who haven't released jumper numbers - now that Sydney and Freo released theirs today
Apparently we're going to try something new next season and play without numbers on the back of guernseys - it's all about confusing the opposition and the umpires...

Analysis by the Roar - just keeps getting better with every article:

1. Geelong Cats

New faces: Tanner Bruhn (GWS), Jack Bowes (Gold Coast), Oliver Henry (Collingwood), Jhye Clark (8), Phoenix Spicer (52), Oscar Murdoch (rookie). Oscar Riccardi, Oisin Mullin (Category B rookie).

Departures: Francis Evans, Paul Tsapatolis, Quinton Narkle, Zane Williams, Nick Stevens, Joel Selwood, Luke Dahlhaus, Shaun Higgins, Cooper Stephens (Hawthorn).

Dad’s Army have done it again. Shortly after winning their first flag in over ten years, the Cats have rejuvenated their list at a stroke.

With Bruhn, Henry, Bowes and Clark, the Cats have brought in four first-round picks to their ageing line-up
. They have moved Higgins, Dahlhaus and Selwood on without damaging the integrity of the team as well.

The Cats win the trade and draft period and look set to go back to back with what is sure to be another deep trip into September for the old men of the AFL.

I'd rather copy Port Adelaide and what they do with 1 except we use 14 otherwise agree retire it permanently.

I think it is alright to rest the number for a bit, but ultimately no player is greater than the club, someone else will one day have a story to be written to add to the history of number 14 at the Geelong football club. Might be a draftee or like number 5 someone we trade in, in either case they'd see Joel's name in their locker, and it might inspire them to go a little further.
