As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

... and I would go for the player I deem best available ...not specific to role as I dont see any role in the VFL group that we have totally covered for talent to develop.

If we end up with a top10 pick, the odds are its a player that plays a mid role in some form Its rare if mids are not the mostly what makes up the top 10 although its supposed to be a tall draft. If I were to guess most in that post you quoted would not be top10. Maybe , like last year we have single figure pick again , this time one we have earned not traded for... and maybe like last year we pick a mid again.

I would say mids generally are easier to acquire than other roles and we just added a MSD mid player as an example.

Going by the VicC game today...the player that appeal to me was George Steven , 189cm hbf/mid but id be surprised if he is a top10 player

geelong_crazy26 ..

EDIT ...Just to add. Saw this picture on another thread ... GeorgeS is one kid who id say would be ready to play very quickly.

Thanks for the insightful good post. Agree entirely.

Perhaps I feel a little bit influenced as well with the frustration of seeing our midfield getting bullied around week in week out the way it has been, and talents like Hawkins and Cameron getting wasted up forward with shocking deliveries having no hope. It is frustrating to see.

I imagine mackie wells will do exactly what you said, and go best available as I think they always have done with their first pick.

But that could change very quickly… all it can take is Clark and holmes come on and become A graders, and problem solved… but that is a wait and see space at present. Possibly knevitt excels as well.. we need depth and more than just two.

If we do drop, I am excited at the idea as well of getting access to elite kids and building up from there. The timing is actually very good to get in before Tasmania swallow up the entirety of the drafts top end. You want to be picking off your apples before they come in to harvest..

The complication is where do we finish. P7 would require a very poor finish to the season. Our worst in years.

There is risk in most things. Pies probably got burnt the worst from it and yet affected the least.

For me its gauging the bird in the hand. If Gold Coast for example .. offered P9 ... id gamble that its a reasonable get... even if we drop...as it would give us the player for 12 months etc. If the Pies offered their 2023 pick for our Fr1 ..then obviously not interested. Its the Holmes assessment we trade for p20... and the next year our pick was p16 yet we won the deal.

I guess someone would arguing trading out a Fr1 for a Pnp best22 would help to ensure we do not drop away. Perfect world we get Suns R1 with another give away but something tells me they are not likely to do that again for a while.
Technically even 8th only matches our worst finish for 8 years.

Finishing lower than 10th would be the worst finish in 21 years

Geelong fans will be salivating at the idea of seeing under-18s prospect George Stevens don the hoops in the VFL later in the season after a dominant performance in the national championships game at the weekend.
The Greater Western Victoria product, who lives in South Warrnambool, dominated in the first Vic Country game despite losing to South Australia by 19 points.
Stevens has already featured for Geelong in the VFL this season, collecting 16 disposals and three marks, and will feature at the level again later in the season.

The 189cm midfield bull missed the entire 2022 campaign with a torn ACL, but has dominated for the Rebels this season with an average of 25.8 disposals, 3.2 tackles and 2.5 marks per game.
He collected a team-high 25 disposals (at 75 per cent efficiency), 13 contested possessions, nine tackles, six marks, five score involvements and one goal in the loss to South Australia.
I'm not sure I'm a huge fan of Stevens on these highlights. Big unit at the level and doesn't seem like he can be tackled effectively by the kids but don't think that translates to seniors footy for him

I will not dismiss you as quick as some others. If we are willing to split our R1.. would we trade one of those split picks and maybe our Fr2 to get him. I still feel Carlton will want something in the future for him to top up their points.

I think the club is less focused on getting value from our picks...and more focused on getting players that can instantly impact our best22.

Id say after what we have had this year...looking at TDK in the ruck at Carlton.. IF he says he wants us.. the clubs will probably go to the max to get the deal done.

Jarryd Lyons is being waste would be a handy addition in our midfield

Yes, they are benefitting from our former zone.

But it's unlikely they get him anyway as he'll probably go inside the top 40.

I think that academy rule is going to change back to top20 again. Clubs missing out on players they have thrown some shekels at is irksome.

Id like to see every club having one player they can match bids on each year ..and thats it. Father Son Academy zone what ever.

I think he is an example of the type of player we could easily acquire... Crouch, Matherson , Dumont ... there will be others delisted too. We have to be careful not to bog down our future with list pluggers. If you bring in players like this.. I think Smith is the benchmark.
