As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool



And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

Interesting that kroeger and whyte are now the only players left from our 2021 pool to not be extended. Kroeger in particular might struggle to get another deal.

I am surprised that they have signed Whyte at same time as Willis?

Id say Ceglar will retire at season ends..
Stanley will do the 1 year contract..
Conway, future is bright but his body is letting him down. So 2024 we look to have Stanley and Conway.

We may look at getting TDK ( which I'm not fussed we don't get him at all )

If TDK doesn't come, I can think us going for another ruckman from another club eg Flynn, Hayes eg the ruck merry go around what happens every year..

Or will we draft a mature age ruck from a State league like we with Fort , Stephenson..

Or will we get another kid from the draft? Which we rarely do, as Conway was our first one since I'm guessing Trent West

We will have to get a ruck in of some sort you cant have only blitz and stanley at 33/34 plus conway next year its too thin.

The debate will be whether we bring in someone that we think can be no1 ruck (like tdk) or whether we trade in or rookie a cheap mature 3rd string backup (which is what we did with ceglar). Personally i think we might simply try and grab a cheap FA like flynn or another mature ruck in a late pick/player swap trade, and see if theres better rucks on the market in 12 months.

I would like to see us rookie a u18 ruck but it depends on how many spots we have and who is available.

Assuming TDK doesn't come, I'd be pretty ok with re-signing Stanley for an extra year on lowish coin, and picking up a serviceable backup from another club or state league. Between that and Conway hopefully being injury free, with chop outs from Blicavs and Neale if needed, I think we're fine for a year. Then, depending on how Conway is tracking in the second half of next season we can go after someone a bit better if need be.

It's always a fine line with rucks. There's only ever space for 2 (one in the AFL, one in the VFL) to be playing high minutes as a first ruck. So if we have too many on the list some end up playing as a makeshift forward in the VFL which does nothing for anyone.

In a perfect world you’d have:

• a gun ruck
• a serviceable backup ruck playing VFL and mentoring…
• a young developing ruck

Plus others in the support cast who can also play other roles. We are well stocked here (Blicavs, Ratugolea, Neale and De Koning).

Our issues are:

• our “gun” isn’t a gun although has been very value good for us and he is near the end
• our backup is a plodder
• our developing ruck has spent his development to date in recovery

Rhys will go one more year hopefully, making it not urgent to replace the “gun” role.

Ceglar should be replaced.

Conway will be persisted with.

The only move I can see us making is TDK or, if he’s not available, a Ceglar replacement who should be low cost and high reliability.

Trade week where fans of clubs seriously suggest overs is what gives me a laugh. Some of the proposed Tim Kelly deals were insane, basically stuff like we give up Kelly + 2nd rounder for WCE first rounder etc.

Or when people come up with 4 club 6 player mega trades. Some of them make sense, but they just never happen.

Briggs would be harder to get as he is contracted flynn easier as free agent. I do rate both though flynn played some good games last year

I don't see any player on our list that would get us anything decent that we'd willingly part with.

So that leaves trading in cap. So, who at an oppo club is over paid enough to come with a selection?

I have no doubt the club would be looking to sign Stanley on a 1-yr extension, but I see him being the one moving into that Ceglar back up role, while bringing in someone to replace Stanley in that #1 role while Conway contnues with his development
