As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

Esava update via Jon Ralph on Fox just now - Simon Lloyd confident he’ll stay, club and Sav’s manager in regular discussions, but Port considering offering him as much as $700k which we can’t/won’t match so things could go either way.

If Port is genuinely offering something close to that he'd be stupid to not take it, because that's surely more than we'd consider - that sort of money would could possible have him in the top 4 or 5 paid at the club, and as exciting as he's been to watch at times this season, not sure he's quite at that level just yet

But the other thing that tells me is if Port value him at such levels contract wise, he's worth more at the trade table than a late 2nd or early 3rd round pick - if ER was a FA, that sort of offer would likely net a compensation pick of either band 2, if not band 1

Maybe we read the tea leaves and put foster in the backline? Timeline works out

Port is offering f***ing what?

Watching tonight, I'm thinking we need to put Ratugolea on ice for the rest of the year to maximise his trade value if this is going to be Ports contract offer - more matches like tonight drop his trade value

We can match that easily cap space wise but we would be stupid too when we are not even 100 % sure hes in our best back 6 structure. Its different for port they have a better young midfield etc than us but they are in a small window and they have bugger all kpds so i can see why they would offer that to make him come-even though hes not worth it.

Any of the best 10 midfielders you would.

I wouldnt-personally other than dangerfield there are very few players besides an elite kpf that i would offer 2 r1s for. But i acknowledge my views are different to most. But regardless i dont think parish is in the best 10.

Hes out of contract and they have very few picks so no matter what $ they offer him i doubt we get offered more than a R2 pick either way.

Bontempelli?
Oliver?
Petracca?

These are extreme examples who are never going to be traded but you’d pay three first rounders for them if you could get your hands on them.

I wouldnt because i think its easier to find players like that (ie elite midfielders) in most drafts than it is to find elite key forwards. But i get where you are cominf from.

If Port want to offer 700K, they're gonna want to figure out a way to get a late 1st/early 2nd. Future 2nd would be a guarantee, but probably need more if they're paying him that much. Possibly could take it and pass it to Carlton for TDK in a 3 way trade and all clubs can just call it a day - who knows though.

On tonight's performance, I'm unfortunately with the naysayers - as he seems to only be able to play on his terms, not the team's terms. Defence was at sea trying to compensate for him, and Stewart was immensely frustrated.

There's no way he doesn't take that and run if they're offering that, as the most we'll pay will be 450-500K...and I doubt he's even worth that given his negative impact on the team.

I've supported him all season, but tonight was just a horror show. If he gets dropped, he'll leave, so the MC won't be as reactive as us. With that said, if we play as poorly defensively tonight as we did, I'm not sure the coaches would have a choice.

Chalk and cheese compared to our performance last week.

$ is merely to get him to choose them it has no correlation to trade value. They have no r1 this year and they wont trade their future 1st. The best they will offer for him is a future 2nd (basically like they did last year) and we will have no choice but to take it as he is ooc this time. Swings and roundabouts.

At the start of the season I thought Smith was still showing enough to suggest that he could go around again in 2024, but in recent weeks the signs have been worrying. Admittedly Tuohy looked cooked as well a month or two ago and has had a notable resurgence lately.

Probably Isaac's last year though regardless of whether he improves or not.

Vaguely separating players by shade but I'll ignore for now

Separating players that all used to live together

In hindsight bad decision to play Sav off a break. He is not a natural footballer and like Stanley it takes time to get back up to speed after being out.

You're spot on.

We were at the game and down near the goals, and you could see Stewart visibly frustrated and animated with Sav...which you don't see often with him.

I've been a fan, but they can't all play in the same side...and we certainly can't have 3-4 very good footballers sacrificing their game just so Sav can perform.

Sam De Koning can - and should - be the best defender in the game one day. He even looked like it at times last year.

He's had his battles with injury but I've said it for a while now...he can't play in the same team as Sav. They essentially do the same thing, except SDK is better at it, while also being considerably younger.

You add that to Jenry, Kolo, Stewart and MOC....it's too much, and none of them are old either, so it's not an issue that we can resolve quickly.

He'll go to Port, and hopefully we can conjure some 3-way trade as you suggest. He's not a dud, but it's a case of right player/wrong time.

The only way it could work long term is if SDK could become an AA quality CHF and vacate his position for Sav....and while he's immensely talented, it's not something I would be banking on.

Yeah I love the man but I don't really want to finish this sentence

not sure if you can access this without Apple News. But this was the tagline with article going on to analyse it

He is out of contract, would garner significant interest on the open market, and his coach is desperate to keep him. So why does Geelong’s back six look so much better with Esava Ratugolea out of it?

Why?

Because he's not Best 22, and shoehorning him into the side throws the team out of kilter.

That is the gist of the article. In the addy. Won 4 or 12 with him in the team and average score against

When Ratugolea went down with a hamstring injury, Geelong had its best three-week defensive period of the season, conceding an average of 75 points per game and never more than 78.

But in the 12 games of the season Ratugolea has played in Geelong’s back six, the Cats have won just four games and have conceded an average of 87.4 points per game, which includes holding a struggling Hawthorn to just 45 points on Easter Monday.

I have liked the way Sav has built as an intercepting defender but boy last night he just looked like he had no clue where to position himself and was a liability.

What I think or hope for doesn't matter but I think that if he went and it helped us get TDK onto the list that it would be a good outcome for us.

It would also save some cap room for other moves that might be more effective down the track.

TDK type is needed... Sav type not so much.

I'm hoping Scott was being so strong about keeping him because it will help drive a better trade for us... But we all know Scott loves Sav and always has, so it's hard to read between the lines on this one.

If Port is seriously gonna offer huge $$$ then he probably goes no matter what anyway.
