As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

FMD a blokes played a grand total of 10 games as a Key defender.
Yes only 10 GAMES !!
Probably in our top 8 in the B&F count until a month ago.
Played some really good games where he did his job... and well mind u.
Out for 4 weeks due to injury.
First game back and the chaps from the bleachers go WHACK!!
That is Fookin Gold!! GOLD!

The red bold is factually wrong - last night was his 12th game if the season, all played in defence, then add in the WCE match to finish last season and we're already up to 13 senior matches. We then factor in that he spent the backend of last year's VFL season in defence, and he's definitely over the "only 10 games" mark

As for how he's placed in the B&F prior to his injury, I think that says as much about how the team was fairing at that stage of the season as anything - yes Ratugolea showed some promise & exciting passages over the opening couple of months, but he also had some really ordinary moments which seem to get overlooked in favour of the "but he took this really good intercept mark"

Yes Ratugolea had shown some promising signs this season, but he also looks like a player with plenty to learn such as defensive positioning at stoppages, a rolling switch with defensive teammates etc. Those are things you'd hope come with experience, and just maybe he needs to get that experience in the VFL, rather than the coaches trying to shoehorn 4 x KPD options into our back six and throwing not just our defensive unit out of balance, but also our structure up the field as others are shifted around in trying to accommodate this one particular move

The other thing we need to remember - Ratugolea turns 25 this month & has 71 games under his belt, basic defensive structures such as following your man are things he should understand by now & something he would have experienced as a forward. He's not some 19/20 year old kid who's getting his first taste of AFL level football

Our BnF right now should look a little like this

I'll give that... 10 full games. You are correct 12 games, yes... Giants a half prior injury and last nights debacle that last 60 odd minutes.
FWIW VFL count for zero TBH. If you watch it you'd know it isn't even GFL quality at times.

Yet they have to defend...to be part of cohesive mid 6. Yeah? Nah? No difference.

Seriously mate, go and read what I wrote in depth, instead of just pulling out these 'old man shouts at clouds' one liners. You don't seem to be understanding, or even trying to understand what we're saying - in favour of your own bias 'that we're all just being mean to Sav for no reason.'

I was one of his biggest supporters this season, and I've come to this conclusion as well...perhaps that should tell you something. Not to mention him being subbed and Stewart getting pissed at him...and us playing better as a collective when he went off.

You're not even arguing with us at this point, you're arguing with Scott and co. and Stewart, who all seemed to have issues with Sav last night as well. What does that tell you?

I did.
Sorry i must be old... Have no idea what that means.
Bias?? We all have bias, don't we? Maybe mine is not so much bias but a different perception. Nothing more nothing less.
That Stewart ripping someone makes any difference ?? nah... he does that every week. You know that yeah?
Subbed. Yes we needed some midfield presence so we had to sacrifice someone. As our midfield was pathetic as you saw when the swans strolled the ball into our defensive 50 with ease continually in that first 60 minutes.
I never argue with Scotty, we talk monthly when we must do our dash to Hughes street Butcher shop.... Oh wait except that Siketa Kransky is better boiled than BBQ'd on a hotplate. He doesn't agree but thats ok. Oh and bolar is not better for Goulash than veal neck... lol.
Tells me he.. and half his team mates had shockers. you can't disagree with that can you??
It's Ok Shadow we don't have to agree on everything. Not personal at all. Just disagree with some posts by some.
Thats why we are here, there's nothing wrong with having different views and presenting them.
Folks are free to pot pat or pass judgments and thats cool by me.
Cheers and remember we are all on the same team.

He has played 12 I think this year and 2 past year
Yeah i have conceded that.
12 is technically correct. He has played 10 full games and half of the Giants game where he did his hammy and yesterdays half game.
Last year i don't recall him playing as a key defender though.
Cheers

I recall discussing him as a key defender a year or so ago on this forum and my concerns about him as a key defender was his lack of footy IQ and inability 1v1 to defend as he is constantly out positioned. So far this seems to have held quite true…

What he does well he does well, such as launching at the ball and intercepting… these things tend to be highlighted more so when we are pressuring upfield and forcing the opposition to bomb it rushed and high he is a gem.

What he struggles with is when the opposition are getting good looks inside fifty, his opponents easily give him the slip and out smart him 1v1 with positioning.

Intercepting is great, but you can’t leak 4-5 goals while doing it directly

Some just seem to think we are a premiership contender still and get wound up like that. We aren’t in 2023. We are in a transition period and need to judge it as such. Stop comparing us to teams vying for a flag and realize where we actually sit in the pecking order and it settles you a bit

Talk on the main board that Ash has parked talks and there may be a stalemate on worth.

What would peeps here be happy to give up? For mine, our current Pick 10 would be about right, for a former Pick 4 who hasn't quite hit the pre-draft hype, but has huge upside with elite delivery by foot and speed, is a country boy, and can play multiple positions.

Jhye Clark 13, Pure_Ownage, Turbocat - curious as to your thoughts?

Sorry been out of the loop... s89.

Not sure. Id say our P10 with something coming back would get it done. Is that the way we want go?

Like I said, nothing wrong with having differing perceptions, but it's the ability to consider other's perspectives that means you're being objective. Laugh reacting at posts and generally talking down to people because they disagree, is just getting caught up in the moment. My heated response probably wasn't much better either - but I think we're both just wanting each other to understand the opposing point of view.

With that said, you're not a poster I've ever had an issue with, so I think we both just got a bit heated based on how we perceive things.

Either way, call it a day and leave it there - and I genuinely do hope Sav proves me wrong, as I've been in the 'defend him' camp all season. Would love this to be a one off.

Too much BF for today, and think we're all a bit narky after last night. No hard feelings mate :)

Would love that to happen, and honestly would be fine with Pick 10 alone with nothing coming back for a player of his calibre. Doubt we get him though, haha.

One can get fixated about paying too much for in system talent .. when realistically if we forget draft... how many kids would equate to him in a "trade".

My main concern is trying to get in the best for our needs.. an although he is very good player..and would just drop into our side..I don't see him as structurally integral to our highest needs .. as he is not really a pure mid or a KPP but of course he would be an excellent add.
Could he play further up the field. Recently Smith looks to have lost his influence. I wonder how he got along with Bruhn

As usual, if a player signals they would like to come..then Geelong would probably do what evert they could to make it happen

It would be nice if we could convince gws to take sav as a trade for ash (and keep some or all of our picks) but i imagine sav only wants to go to port.

stephen wells whispers

“Fresh Surfcoast Air”

He’s one we were reportedly seriously interested in during his draft year right?

Isn’t it believed that we were in a position where it was either Mitch or Sam with Port likely to take the one we don’t select - could we now end up with both?
