I know its only a preseason match but every so often I find another reason to get down on my knees and thank whatever God intervened to make Richmond offer Hopper 7 years.
39% disposal efficiency today.
Stringer was the next to come to mind. Devon Smith.I know there’s obviously been some big name players we’ve been interested in, that we’ve been linked to and ultimately they’ve decided to sign elsewhere - but of those who’ve changed teams & opted against Geelong’s offer, is there anyone we could look upon as being one that really got away, and be like “damn, would have been good if they said yes to us!”?
Please note that I’m not talking about those who’ve opted to re-sign with their original club such as Curnow or say TDK, but purely those who’ve changed teams - like Hopper or Stringer

Yeah there's not a lot
Ah Boak. What could have beenIt feels like there’s been a few we’ve been strongly linked that, that folks like the sound of joining the club & then in the immediate aftermath of the trade period there’s clear frustration & venting about said playing not joining the club
But upon reflection a year or two down the track, it seems like we haven’t neessarily been hurt by those who’ve opted to go elsewhere
What does seem to have hurt more when there seems to have been a clear link or connection with a player, but they’ve opted to stay put rather than change clubs
He was a Cats fan yeah? Also, judging from the current media environment out west, if Reid isn't immediately the solution to all West Coasts problems he may just about get run out of town...
.... bring the boy home?
The funniest thing about the Hopper deal is many of us in here (including me) where luke-warm on him at best.I know its only a preseason match but every so often I find another reason to get down on my knees and thank whatever God intervened to make Richmond offer Hopper 7 years.

As it so happens he was a cats fanHe was a Cats fan yeah?
I would correct one thing.Even I preferred Bruhn to Hopper at the time (and that’s saying something).
Hopper simply is and was overrated and was also on the decline.
GWS completely fleeced Richmond.
GWS are pretty decent at the trade table it must be said.
Hardwick really went all in on Hopper + Taranto, trading away Richmond’s future, fully knowing he wasn’t going to be there after the end of the year.
The guy coached 3 flags for them and was huge… but I think he clearly put his final dance year ahead of what’s best for the club by green lighting those trades and If any coach done that to us on their way out, I’d be fuming.
Also under rated was that Bruhn was about to request a trade to the Hawks before breaking their hearts to join us.The funniest thing about the Hopper deal is many of us in here (including me) where luke-warm on him at best.
The belief here was if it was a one or the other deal between him and Bruhn, we felt we got the much better deal with Tanner as he was younger, suited the age profile we needed at the time, and had the scope to improve.
Next minute you've got Richmond posters coming in here acting like they've stolen prime Cindy Crawford from us, and how distraught we must be to miss out.
Jacob Hopper. I repeat, Jacob F***ING Hopper is who you sold your future for.
The whole point of copying the Geelong method was bringing in superstars like Cameron & Dangerfield. League altering talents. That's the idea they took inspiration from.
You don't sell the farm for B+ midfielders you can find anywhere, and that's exactly what they went and did.

It's almost overwhelming how good that trade period ended up for us
Stephens will probably just end up back here being captain of the bankers in all likelihoodThe Hawks also thought they were a real shot at the Bowes and Pick 7 deal.
At least they scored Copper Stephens and traded Mitchell away to the premiers.
Oh stop, I am cryingThe Hawks also thought they were a real shot at the Bowes and Pick 7 deal.

I said when we traded him that he was a GFL player… So that’s what I’m aiming for.Stephens will probably just end up back here being captain of the bankers in all likelihood
Whichever mid we chase next has to have breakaway pace to balance us out I think.Hopper would be handy right now. But it always should've been a Zach Tuohy type deal. Decent player but don't break the bank for him.
Then Richmond offered both him and GWS more than we gave up for Cameron. It's left their list completely stuffed too. Vanilla, slow midfield and virtually no up and coming young talent.

I think the board would have been five with Stringer. We would have been fine with Tarryn Thomas up until the latest round of strife. To be fair smith was a very good player for a while (and we needed a small fwd then) before the degenerative knee kicked in.
Stringer i dont think would have ever been ticked off by our board culture wise but watts we were keen on.
Lucky those guys picked other clubs as if we traded one or both of our 1st 2 picks we probably dont take TK and then we never have the currency to get cameron 3 years later.
