Yep and the goal will be to clear out picks this season so we Port don’t match. If we don’t have the picks, they’ll take the compo. That’s why there’s such an emphasis on a mid this period.

So Geelong won’t be trading any future picks, or even attempt to make an attempt to trade in some picks? Interesting way to trade. Sorry for the intrusion but this mentality seems strange to say the least.

It’s Wells and Mackie, if they tell me to eat a mud pie off the ground you better believe I’m smashing it down.
They have way too long a track record to be denied or even questioned at this point.

When Smith has played, our midfield has only been really belted once (against Carlton) this season. We were 4th in the comp for score from stoppage differential before that - Smith, Holmes, Atkins and Mannagh (who has been the extra at stoppages around the ground) have held up their end of the bargain. Fixing that last midfield rotation is key of course, as Clark/Knevitt etc are not doing enough. But there are some overreactions on exactly how awful our midfield has been this year. Holmes finding some consistency within games would be a big help, but he's young and it's a transitional period (moving from utility to full time midfielder).
Mannagh in at the centre bounce ? Sorted

The industry as a whole probably needs to realise that.

Some of the numbers do look outlandish, but when you consider the increase, it's really not that bad.

Like mentioned above, 800k for TDK just won't cut it anymore.

Our 'come for less' approach would be in the 900k-1.1m range on today's equivalent figures for a player of his calibre.
Also worth noting that a quarter or more of a list is often made up of players on draftee contracts. Googling it the base wage for draftees is still basically the same and it's likely those first few contracts off base wage aren't tracking much higher.

I'd wager that 70%+ of the increase is going towards players you expect to be top 5-7 in the BnF

Plus you can bank some salary from one season to the next. and they would have some in the bank for sure.

Im not sure how much you can bank though.
I think you can only bank a few % and it disappears after a year or two. Can't remember the details. Whatever it is Saints will have the full complement of it to throw at players.

I'm also thinking they've probably front loaded contracts and that puts them in a tricky position

This cap floor is destroying footy

In this context, if Geelong had traded out all their future picks this year then going into next years trade period (which is the one being referenced here) they'd only have a 2027 2nd and 3rd rounder to trade, even the 2028 first rounder would be off the table due to the 2 in 4 rule.

There's no practicable way to trade for a better hand than a band 1 compensation pick in that situation unless the other party can convince an equivalent player to ask for a trade. Geelong (or any club in that position) has no reason to push them out either. If the players you want to keep are all signed you just say "sorry, required player".

The club losing the player still gets the compo pick, but you're effectively making the restricted free agent an unrestricted free agent by taking away any incentive to match.

I don't see what is strange about that

This is a wild statement imo.

Plenty of teams have proven you don't need to pay a ruckman big dollars to win a flag. Anything over 800k is reserved for players that can win a game off their own boot, elite midfielder (Dangerfield) or elite key forward (Cameron). TDK is good player but he is not someone that will regularly step up and win you a game in the last quarter. The hype train around him is insane.

And what is average Australian salary probably 75g....
So he would be on 13x plus more then a average salary
That's correct, but the average salary operates over a 40 to 50 year working life, not the next six to seven years... and above all, it doesn't change the fact that the extra money does make a difference to a player's life.

Let's say that TdK takes $800k/year for three years, then perhaps slides back to $700k for the next two, compared for $1.3m for five.

That's roughly $2.4m over five years in the pocket, vs $3.5m in pocket. If the player wants to purchase a $2m house, then the latter figure allows them to pay it off with money to invest for life. The former figure does not.

Kolo is underrated on here, and we are missing him big time. He just locks down and does his job every week.
Spot On!!
Been saying it for years. Does what defenders do. Defend.
Might not and really isn't a great kick by foot but does the negating/defensive stuff well on smalls/meds and some talls.
Allows the coaching staff far more options in the defensive arc/back 6 when he is out there.
Heard Scott speak of him many times in glowing terms. For me Kolo is a tremendous loyal foot soldier.
When he returns along with Henry will help in a big way as i think the lofty heights Stewart has played at are nearly gone as a week 2 week prospect.

True, but he has also really cleaned up his ball use in the last three/four years. He's not Lawson Humphries, but he's also not a liability any more either.
Edit: this is just by eye, not statistical.

Anything over 800k is crazy for TDK IMO. Anything not crazy, Carlton match.
TDK for $800k per???
QUICK!!! QUICK!!
Where do we sign...???!!!
Get us a pen!!!
Even though i don't rank ruckman too much. 800k is a bargain.
I'd even look at 1 to 1.2mil over 6 just to get his signature.
Him on the field allows SDK and Blitz to play down back full-time.
The domino effect alone would be amazing.

I suppose with a TDK it would not only allow Blitz down the back but allow another rotation in the middle
The major, major issue with blowing big bucks on a ruckman is that renders Edwards and Conway both immediately obsolete if they happen to come good, medically speaking.

Thing is Blitz only has a year or two left I’d say and Stewart probably in the same boat
These points are especially true.
2 generational players that have been instrumental in our ability to be there on the last fortnight of many seasons.
Once Danger/Blitz/Stewart retire it will be a huge holes to fill. If indeed they are fillable.
Luckily Sully looks like a gem that will go some ways in a softer landing once they retire.

Yeah i agree.
We've spent 2 decent picks on the best rucking prospects in those two drafts.
Knowing our luck if we go in a different direction it could bite us on the arse good and proper.

Away from BF, I've seen Geelong fans say they'd be happy to trade in Oliver, even on his $1 million+ deal and that he'd be worth it

I'd rather put that money towards TDK who is the one more likely to make an immediate positive impact on not just our midfield but also the team as a whole, compared with Oliver who looks like he'll be a $7 figure income VFL player by the end of his career

Is TDK worth the reported $1.7million that it's been said St Kilda is offering, probably not; but if looking at around $1.2million we'd be crazy too not be offering that
